What do property taxes pay for? When you call the police or fire department, play in the park, send your children to public school, check out a book at the library, or eat at an inspected restaurant, you are using services paid for by your property taxes. Your taxes also pay for services to help people move from welfare to work, protect children and senior citizens from abuse and neglect, protect our water and air from pollution, repair and build roads, and much more. Property taxes are the largest source of revenue to fund these services you count on every day. For more information about Mecklenburg County’s budget, the services funded by your property taxes, and links to municipal websites, visitwww.MeckNC.gov. For information about the budget for the City of Charlotte, visitwww.CharlotteNC.gov. Budget information for Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews,Mint Hill, and Pineville may be found on their respective websites.

What property is taxed?Property taxes are levied on real property, such as land and buildings; business personal property, including office equipment, machinery, computer equipment and others; registered motor vehicles; individual personal property, such as boats, unregistered vehicles, campers and others; and other property as permitted by North Carolina Law.

How much will I pay in taxes? The amount you pay is based on the assessed value of your property, the tax rate, and any other items included on the bill. The County Assessor assesses the value of all taxable property as of January 1st. The tax you pay is based on that value and the tax rate established by the elected city, county, or town officials. To calculate the taxes due, divide the assessed value by $100.00 and multiply the result by the tax rates. Also, add the fees charged to determine the total tax due. For example, the tax bill for a home assessed at $200,000 in value is $1,646.40 for County taxes and $977.40 for Charlotte taxes. Other charges, such as Solid Waste Fees, are added to the total due.

What are the Police and Fire Taxes?Property owners in unincorporated Mecklenburg County pay taxes for police services through the Law Enforcement Service District Tax and for fire protection, including emergency services, through the Fire Protection Service District Tax.

How do I change the address on my tax bill?To change the mailing address for real estate tax bills, please visit http://MeckNC.gov/taxcollections, and click on Submit a Change of Address to access the change of address notice.

Forte Payment Systems charges a service fee of 2.35% or a minimum of $1.95 for credit and debit card payments. There is no fee for an eCheck payment. The entire 24-digit tax bill number is required.

2. By Telephone: Call toll-free 1-800-994-1026 to use your credit/debit card or choose eCheck to have payment deducted from your checking account. Forte Payment Systems charges a service fee of 2.35% or a minumum of $1.95 for credit and debit card payments. There is no fee for an eCheck payment. The entire 24-digit tax bill number is required.

3. By Mail: Mail both the tax payment stub and check or money order to Mecklenburg County Tax Collector, P.O. Box 71063, Charlotte, NC 28272-1063. 5. Online NOTE: This payment option is not recommended for payment of taxes. Any interest accrued dueBanking: to a rejected payment cannot be removed from the tax bill. Funds are sent electronically or by check to the Mecklenburg County Tax Collector by your financial institution. A payment may take up to four business days, after it has been authorized, before it is applied to the tax bill. The entire 24-digit tax bill number must be entered on the online bill pay account number field to ensure proper payment posting to the tax bill. The payment will be rejected and sent back to the financial institution if the tax bill number is missing or incorrect. Interest will apply if payment is received after January 7, 2019. Tax bill numbers from previous payments must be deleted and replaced with a current tax bill number for each payment.

What is the County’s check policy? Checks must have drawer’s name, drawer’s address, check number, financial institution’s name, and MICR number preprinted on the check.
