INITIATIVES
Biosafety group initiated an annual Biosafety Month to address common biological laboratory safety concerns. This is accomplished by providing flyers and information tables along with meeting personnel in various science buildings.
Radiation Safety group is hosting the South Texas Chapter of Health Physics Society’s annual student presentation and business meeting. UH students will be invited to present.
The entire EHLS staff received training and certification regarding CPR and First Aid
EHLS staff received 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher Training
CAMPUS COMMITTEES
Institutional Biosafety Committee Radiation Safety Committee
FUTURE GOALS
Biological Safety
Utilize EHSA to track and verify use of biological agents Develop and implement an Institutional Biosafety Committee/Division of
Research approved Non-Compliance policy and memo for biological PI’s
Chemical Safety
Build Chemical Safety Committee Work on a web-based Chemical Inventory Program
Environmental Protection
Replace current chemical waste and spill procedures with two separate trainings: one for lab generated waste, and one for non-lab generated waste
Increase coverage of waste generator knowledge and waste generator documentation programs
Fire Safety
Transition inspections from SharePoint platform to EHSA Have all existing buildings on a two-year inspection rotation
UH EHLS FY18 Annual Report 11 uh.edu/ehls
Occupational Safety
Transform current online general laboratory safety training to an instructor-led course for use by laboratory staff.
Strive to increase the number of shop safety inspections
Radiation Safety
Updated web-based Radioactive Safety Refresher Training Implement radiation safety recurring training delinquency tracking in
EHSA to improve compliance
