BUILDING THE FLIGHT PLAN
G2 > G3 > G4 > G1 > G2
IN THE FLIGHT PLAN CATALOG
There are two ways to build a G1000 flight plan. (1) Build the flight plan as the
active flight plan, or (2) build the flight plan in the Flight Plan Catalog. Building
the flight plan in the Flight Plan Catalog automatically saves the flight plan. The
active flight plan can be also saved to the catalog. This tutorial will show you how
to build the flight plan in the Flight Plan Catalog.
The first three waypoints will be loaded by using the RECENT feature. The forth
waypoint by using the USER feature. Not available on earlier G1000 Trainers.
The fifth waypoint will by loaded by entering the waypoint using the FMS inner
and outer knobs in the traditional way. Use the recent feature if you had just
entered the waypoints before building the flight plan. The RECENT feature does
not work if many other waypoints have been used before building the flight plan.
The RECENT and USER features are made available if the FMS inner knob is
twisted counter clockwise first. Then twist the FMS inner knob clockwise to get to
the RECENT or USER drop down list. The FMS outer knob is used to high light
the waypoint to be loaded from the drop down list. The ENT key is used to load
the waypoint into the flight plan. If the first twist of the FMS inner knob is not in
the desired direction, press the CLR key to go back and give it another try.
NOTE:
1. Activating a flight plan from the G1000 Flight Plan Catalog will cause the nearest leg to the aircraft’s current position to go active automatically. This
is common to most GPS systems. However, building the flight plan as the
active flight plan, the first leg goes active unless changed.
2. Most of this tutorial was done with the G1000 Trainer version 8.20. Images from the Garmin Integrated Flight Deck Trainer version 12.00 were inserted
when required to show what you would see using version 12.00 trainer.
Otherwise, what you see that is important is the same for both versions. All
CAP aircraft should have been upgraded to be equivalent to the 12.00
trainer; however, some of you may be using older trainer versions. Click on
help and then about to determine which trainer version you have.

MAP page on MFD is shown:
Press the FPL key.
-
4
Turn the Inner FMS Knob to get the Flight Plan Catalog.
You will get the above view with late G1000 software and simulators.
With earlier G1000 software and simulators, you will skip to the view below.
-
5
Press the MENU key to get the flight plan menu options.
Rotate the FMS Outer Knob down to “Create New Flight Plan”.
-
6
Press the ENT key, and turn Inner FMS counter clockwise one click.
Turn FMS Inner Knob clockwise one click to get Nearest Airports.
-
7
Turn the FMS Inner Knob clockwise another click to get Recent Waypoints.
Rotate FMS outer knob until the G2 waypoint is highlighted.
-
8
Press the ENT key to accept G2 as the first flight plan waypoint.
Press the ENT key again to confirm.
-
9
Again, turn the FMS inner counter clockwise to load the second flight plan
WPT G3, then turn the FMS inner knob clockwise until RECENT Waypoints
appear, and then turn the FMS outer knob until waypoint G3 in highlighted.
Press the ENT key to accept G3 as the next waypoint.
-
10
Press the ENT key again to confirm G3 as the next waypoint.
Again, turn the FMS inner counter clockwise to load the third flight plan
WPT G4, then turn the FMS inner knob clockwise until RECENT Waypoints
appear, and then turn the FMS outer knob until waypoint G4 is highlighted.
-
11
Press the ENT key to accept G4 as the next waypoint.
Press the ENT key to accept G4 as the next flight plan waypoint.
Press the ENT again to confirm G4 as the next flight plan waypoint.
-
12
Again, turn the FMS inner counter clockwise to load the 4th
flight plan WPT,
then turn the FMS inner knob clockwise until RECENT (all Trainer versions)
or USER (Trainer v10.00 & later) WPTs appear.
Turn FMS outer knob until WPT G1 is highlighted
-
13
Press the ENT key to confirm G1 as the 4th
flight plan WPT.
Press the ENT again to confirm G1 as the next flight plan waypoint.
-
14
Let us load the G2 waypoint another way. This time turn the FMS inner knob
clockwise instead of counter clockwise.
Turning the FMS inner knob clockwise always starts with the letter K.
-
15
Now turn the FMS inner knob counter clockwise to get to the letter G.
Turn the FMS outer knob one click clockwise to the next character position.
-
16
Turn the FMS inner knob counter clockwise until the number 2 appears.
Press the ENTER key to accept G2 as the last flight plan waypoint.
-
17
Press the FMS inner knob to extinguish the cursor.
Now the G2 to G2 flight plan is in the Flight Plan Catalog.
Activating the G2 to G2 Flight Plan from the Flight Plan Catalog:
-
18
Press the FPL key.
Turn the Inner FMS Knob clockwise to get the Flight Plan Catalog.
Then press the Inner FMS knob to bring up the cursor. Then rotate either
the FMS inner or outer knob to highlight the G2 to G2 flight plan.
-
19
Press the ENTER key to bring up the confirming message.
Press the ENTER key again to activate the G2 to G2 Flight Plan.
The G3 to G4 leg automatically went active. The G3 to G4 leg is the nearest leg
to KLAL. When activating a FPL from the G1000 FPL Catalog, the nearest leg
to present position will go active. This is generally true for all GPS models.
-
20
Turn the range knob clockwise until the MIA 4D search area is visible.
NOTE: The magenta line, the active leg, is the nearest leg to KLAL.
Press the Inner FMS Knob to bring up the cursor, turn either FMS knob clockwise
to highlight the G1 WPT, press the DIRECT TO key, and hit the ENT key twice.
-
21
NOTE: The Present Position (KLAL) to G1 leg took the G4 to G1 leg. The
G4 to G1 leg will be restored upon arrival at G1. View the G1000-Detailed
Demo-XTK FPL video and tutorial to fly this flight plan.
