WARNING

Unusual handling when theengine is in emergency oper-ationAccident hazard

Avoid rapid acceleration andpassing maneuvers.

Possible cause:The engine control unit has diag-nosed a fault which impairs theengine performance or throttleresponse. The engine is run-ning in the emergency-operationmode. In exceptional cases, theengine stops and can no longerbe started.

Have the malfunction correctedas soon as possible at anauthorized service facility,preferably an authorizedBMW Motorrad Retailer.It is possible to continue rid-ing, however the engine perfor-mance and engine speed range

may be impaired and not func-tion as normal.

Engine warningGeneral warning lightflashes yellow.

The engine electronicssymbol appears on the

display.

WARNING

Damage to engine duringemergency operationAccident hazard

Drive slowly and avoid rapidacceleration and passing ma-neuvers.If possible, have the vehiclepicked up and the fault elim-inated at a specialist work-shop, preferably an authorizedBMW Motorrad retailer.

Possible cause:The engine control unit has di-agnosed a fault, which can leadto a severe secondary fault. Theengine is in the emergency-oper-ation mode.

Avoid high load and enginespeed ranges if possible.Have the malfunction correctedas soon as possible at anauthorized service facility,preferably an authorizedBMW Motorrad Retailer.Continued driving is possi-ble, however it is not recom-mended.

ABS self-diagnosis notcompleted

ABS indicator light flashes.

Possible cause:

ABS self-diagnosis rou-tine not completed

The ABS function is notavailable, as the self-diagnosisfunction has not beencompleted. (The motorcyclemust reach a specifiedminimum speed before thesystem can check operation ofthe wheel sensors: min 3 mph(min 5 km/h))

Ride off slowly. It must benoted that the ABS functionis not available until the self-diagnosis has been completed.

ABS errorABS indicator light lightsup.

Possible cause:The ABS control unit has de-tected an error. The ABS func-tion is not available at all or isrestricted.

It is possible to continue rid-ing the motorcycle if you makeallowance for the failed or lim-ited ABS function. You shouldalso take account of the addi-tional information on situationsthat can lead to an ABS fault( 61).Have the malfunction correctedas soon as possible at anauthorized service facility,preferably an authorizedBMW Motorrad Retailer.

ABS switched offABS indicator light lightsup.

Possible cause:The ABS system has been deac-tivated by the rider.

Activating ABS ( 39).

Fuel down to reserveLow-fuel warning light lightsup.

WARNING

Do not drive to the extent thatthe fuel tank is completelyempty.

Possible cause:The fuel has all been used up;only the fuel reserve remains.

Have your motorcycle servicedregularly by a specialist work-shop, preferably an authorizedBMW Motorrad retailer.The motorcycle remains op-erationally safe and is suitablyroad-safe.

The value of the motorcycleis preserved to the greatestpossible extent.

Service displayRemaining distance untilservice is due and servicedue date

If service is due within 700 miles,the SERVICE inscription 1 andthe remaining distance covered 2will be displayed and counteddown in steps of 100 miles. Itis briefly displayed following thePre-Ride-Check.

If service is due within a month,the SERVICE inscription 1 andthe service date 3 are shown.

If service is due because of thedistance covered and the date,the SERVICE inscription 1, theremaining distance covered 2

Permanent SERVICEinscription

If the service appointment isoverdue or the service distancecovered is exceeded, SERVICE 1will be permanently displayedduring operation.

Fuel reserveCruising range

The range RANGE 1 indicateshow far you can ride 2 with theremaining fuel in the tank. Thisdistance is calculated based onfuel quantity and average con-sumption.

If the motorcycle is standing onits side stand, the motorcycle'sinclined position will preventthe fuel level from being reg-istered accurately. This is thereason why the range is re-calculated only when the sidestand is folded in.

The travel range automaticallyappears in the multifunctiondisplay after the fuel reservelevel is reached.After a refueling stop, therange is recalculated if thequantity of fuel in the tankis greater than the reservequantity.The determined range is anapproximate reading.

IgnitionVehicle keysYou are provided with 2 vehiclekeys.A single key fits the steering andignition lock, the fuel filler capand the seat lock.

Locking handlebars

ATTENTION

Handlebars turned in wrongdirection when motorcyclepropped on side stand.Component damage cause bytipping over

On level ground, always turnthe handlebars to the left to setthe steering lock.Otherwise the angle of theground determines whetherthe handlebars are set to theleft or right.

If the slope of the road permits,turn the handlebars to the left.

Push the ignition key 1 intothe steering lock and turn tothe LOCK position while mov-ing the handlebars slightly.Ignition, lights and all electricalcircuits are switched off.Handlebars are locked.The vehicle key can now beremoved.

Switching on ignition

Insert ignition key 1 into igni-tion switch/steering lock andturn to the ON position.Parking lights, lowbeam head-light, and all functional circuitsare switched on.Engine can be started.Pre-Ride-Check is carried out.( 49)ABS self-diagnosis isperformed ( 50)

BrakesHow do you achievethe shortest stoppingdistances?The dynamic load distribution be-tween the front and rear wheelchanges during braking. Theheavier you brake, the greaterthe weight transfer to the frontwheel. Increases in the load onan individual wheel are accom-panied by a rise in the effectivebraking force that the wheel canprovide.To achieve the shortest brakingdistance, the front wheel brakemust be rapidly pulled to thepoint where ABS activates, thepressure point must be held andthe rear wheel brake must be ac-tivated at the same time. Thisprocedure provides ideal exploita-tion of the extra weight transferto the front wheel. The clutch

should also be disengaged at thesame time.Locking up of the front wheelis prevented by BMW MotorradABS.With the frequently instructed"forced braking," in which thebrake pressure is generated asquickly as possible and with greatforce, dynamic load distribu-tion lags behind the progres-sive increases in decelerationrate and the braking force cannotbe completely transferred to theroad surface. Due to the miss-ing wheel load, the ABS mustprevent a tendency of the frontwheel to lock up even with min-imal braking action. This resultsin a reduced braking action.

Anti-Lock BrakeSystemHow does the ABS work?The maximum braking force thatcan be transferred to the roadsurface is partially dependent onthe friction coefficient of the roadsurface. Gravel, ice, snow andwet roads offer a considerablypoorer friction coefficient than adry, clean asphalt surface. Thepoorer the friction coefficient ofthe road surface is, the longerthe braking distance will be.If the maximum transferablebrake force is exceeded whenthe driver increases the brakepressure, the wheels beginto lock and driving stability islost. A fall can occur. Before

this situation can occur, ABSintervenes and adapts brakepressure to the maximumtransferable brake force, so thewheels continue to turn anddriving stability is maintainedirrespective of the condition ofthe road surface.

What happens whenrough roads areencountered?Bumpy or rough roads can brieflylead to a loss of contact betweenthe tires and the road surface,until the transferable brakingforce is reduced to zero. If brak-ing is carried out in this situa-tion, ABS must reduce the brakepressure to ensure driving stabil-ity when restoring contact to theroad. At this point in time, theABS must assume extremely lowfriction coefficients (gravel, ice,snow) so that the running wheelsturn in every imaginable case and

the driving stability is ensured.After detecting the actual con-ditions, the system adjusts theoptimum brake pressure.

Lifting off rear wheelEven during severe braking, ahigh level of tire grip can meanthat the front wheel does notlock up until very late, if at all.Consequently, ABS does not in-tervene until very late, if at all.Under these circumstances therear wheel can lift off the ground,and the outcome can be a high-siding situation in which the mo-torcycle can flip over.

When braking heavily, bear inmind that the ABS control can-not always be relied on to pre-vent the rear wheel from liftingoff the ground.

Special situationsTo detect the tendency of thewheels to lock up, the speedsof the front and rear wheel arecompared. If the system regis-ters implausible data for an ex-tended period of time it will de-activate the ABS as safety pre-caution and a display will alertyou to an ABS error. A self-diag-nosis routine must be completedbefore the error will be displayed.Apart from problems on theBMW Motorrad ABS, unusual

riding conditions can also causea fault message to be generated.Should a fault code occur due toone of the driving conditions de-scribed above, the ABS functioncan be reactivated by switchingthe ignition off and then on again.

Unusual riding conditions:Heating up on an auxiliarystand at idle speed or with gearengaged.Rear wheel locked-up for alonger period of time by enginebrake, e.g. when riding downsteep hills.

PaintWashing the motorcycle regularlywill help counteract the long-termeffects of substances that dam-age the paint, especially if yourmotorcycle is ridden in areaswith high air pollution or naturalsources of dirt, e.g. tree resin orpollen.At the same time, you shouldremove particularly aggressivematerials immediately; other-wise changes in the paint anddiscoloration can occur. Theseinclude spilled fuel, oil, greaseand brake fluid as well as birddroppings. We recommend youuse BMW Motorrad gloss polishor BMW paint cleaner.Contamination on the paint fin-ish is particularly easy to see

after the motorcycle has beenwashed. Remove this type ofsoiling with cleaning naphtha orspirit on a clean cloth or cottonball. BMW Motorrad recom-mends using BMW tar removerfor removing tar spots. Then adda protective wax coating to thepaint at these locations.

Paint preservationBMW Motorrad recommendsapplying BMW car wax or prod-ucts containing carnauba wax orsynthetic wax to preserve yourpaintwork.When water fails to form beadson the paint surface this indicatesit is time to apply wax.

Store motorcycleClean the motorcycle.

Completely fill the motorcycle'sfuel tank.

Removing battery ( 93).Spray the brake and clutchlever, and the center and sidestand pivots with a suitable lu-bricant.

Protect metal and chrome-plated parts with an acid-freegrease (Vaseline).

Park the motorcycle in a dryspace in such a way that bothwheels are under no load(preferably by using the frontand rear-wheel stands availablefrom BMW Motorrad).

If you think that your motorcycle has a fault which may cause an accident, injury ordeath, you must inform the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)immediately and BMW of North America, LLC.If the NHTSA receives other similar complaints, it may open an investigation. If it findsthat a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, the NHTSA may order the manufac-turer to perform a recall and remedy campaign. YourBMW Motorrad retailer confirmsthat the service has been per-formed and enters the date forthe next service.For riders who drive long dis-tances annually, it may be neces-sary to come in for service beforethe entered date. In this case acorresponding maximum odome-ter reading will also be entered inthe confirmation of service. If thisodometer reading is reached be-
