Hello Everyone,
Anyone living on, or visiting Gran Alacantcannot help but notice all of the work goingon at the moment. All the new paving will make the walking agreat deal more pleasant, especially if youare pulling shopping trolleys or pushingprams/pushchairs.The new childrens area outside theMunicipal office, has more than doubled insize and has lots of new play equipment, and along with the refreshments kiosk inamong the pine tree, makes for a nice areato while away the time. After watching tv programmes telling all ofthe horror stories of living in Spain, wemust consider ourselves veryfortunate to live in such a nice area.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertisercontinue to bring you allof the news from theGran Alacant Councillor,Loreto Cascales, as we havesince May 2005. photo: May 2005
The day before we had our meeting withLoreto, Valencian Officials announced thatthe new tram system that will eventuallyrun all along the coast to Murcia will havea stop on Gran Alacant, The tram will linkAlicante to the Airport then El Altet, GranAlacant (near the Repsol garage) on toSanta Pola , it will then have stops all theway down to Murcia. The tram will be veryfriendly towards the environment and theline will be flanked with trees, and atsome points, with a cycle track.
Also announced at the same time, wasthat Gran Alacant is to have a new, purpose built medical centre, which willcater for our needs with many specialisedunits. It will be built on the land justbefore Monte Faro and the Santa Pola LifeResort. The plans for this centre are nowto be drawn up.
All of the tenders for the Park are in, andthe construction company has beenchosen. Work is hoped to start around theend of July.
Around the same date, the work on thelandscaping of the edge of the Clot willstart.
Again at this busy time, we will also seethe start of the closing in andmodification of the Sports Hall.In the same area work will soon start onthe new custom built Gran Alacant
market site. Below is the initial plan, showing the layout for the stalls, car
parking and landscaping. The area is tobe designed as to be available toaccommodate other functions in the samearea.
Those that live here will see the massivelengths of new paving now beingconstructed, both eminating from the GACentre roundabout. One length going fromhere down to the new school and theother length stretching all the way to thepost office. The previous kerbing laidmany years ago, did not allow for paving,so new kurb stones have had to be laid togain the correct height for the newpaving.
The area we mentioned last month, whichis to have patanca and a childrens playarea (halfway between the GA Centreroundabout and the new school) waschosen by the Council as it is an area thatgot alot of complaints about untidiness. As this is a sandy dusty area, which
TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER” phone: 966 699 167 5
always sees sand blown about, the carpark area will be surfaced in such a wayas to eliviate this problem. You will beable to access the area from the newpavement on the side of the road, as wellas two other entrances. Trees will bereplanted from the area where some ofthe pavements are being laid. Also newtrees and lighting will be added to makeit a very nice area.
We do have an article elsewhere in thisissue about the area of Puerto Marino
where there are untidy areas.. One areawhich Masa had for their sales offices isto be cleaned up an made to look alotbetter.
WE have been asked why the swimmingpool in Santa Pola is still not available tous all. 3 companies were awarded theinitial contract but recently one of themwent into insolvency. This has obviouslycaused problems in finding a newcompany, however, the other 2 have cometogether and agreed to take on the extrawork, so, we are now back on track andhope to have it completed by the end ofthis summertime.
Two road areas where we were asked totalk about speed bumps have come tofruition. The first has already had twoslow down bumps placed and the other, ata junction coming out onto a main road
where cars are travelling quickly, makingthe junction dangerous is now beingconsidered.
Residents in the area high above thebeach road juction where the newpumping and sewage area is, have beencomplaining of nastly smells in the area.We have been down there, and indeed, attimes it is very unpleasant. We havespoken to Loreto. and she will speak tothe department concerned.
A temporary church is now being built ina residential block near to the newschool. Masa have always promised to oneday build a church, but at the momentmoney is a problem.so...they have agreedto kit out a commercial building to satisfythe needs of the church goers until moneyallows them to built a brand newchurch..one day.
The Gran Alacant fiestas supplied freefrom the Towh Hall will take place on July24-25-26. All events will be held outsidethe municiple centre. Three days ofchildrens games, music from the newReckless now renamed Dark Night,Spanish dancing and refreshment areas. These events are due in future to bestaged at the site of the new market.

Baptising an Irishman (sent to us by an Irish friend)An Irishman, is stumbling through the woods, totally drunk, when he
comes upon a preacher baptising people in the river. He proceeds to walk into the water and subsequently bumps into the
preacher. The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of alcohol,
whereupon he asks the drunk,'Are you ready to find Jesus?'The drunk shouts, 'Yes, oi am.'So the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the water.

GASP!, Gran Alacant's new amateurdrama group, have announced theirfirst production - and they're aimingto start with a bang!
The play, well-loved British authorAlan Bennett's hilarious comedy"Habeas Corpus", is set inpermissive-society Brighton in the1970s, and as one of the charactersremarks, "It´s sex, sex, sexeverywhere these days!"
Described by GASP!'s director Roger
TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER” phone: 966 699 167 7
He pulls him up and asks the drunk, 'Brother have you found Jesus?'The drunk replies, 'No, oi haven't found Jesus.'The preacher shocked at the answer, dunks him into the water again for a little longer. He again pulls him out of the water and asks again, 'Have you found Jesus me brother?'The drunk again answers, 'No, oi I haven't found Jesus.'By this time the preacher is at his wits end and dunks the drunk in the water again ---but this time holds him down for about 30 seconds and when he begins kicking his armsand legs he pulls him up.The preacher again asks the drunk, 'For the love of God have you found Jesus?'The drunk wipes his eyes and catches his breath and says to the preacher, 'Are you suredis is where he fell in?'
Keevil as "a saucy seaside postcardcome to life", the piece features allthe classic figures of traditionalBritish Carry-On comedy - largeladies, frustrated spinsters, andmalpracticing doctors, as well as alustful vicar and a pretty young girlwith a secret!
Rehearsals are well under way, andafter a summer break - "This play'shot enough, without the addedexcitement of tropical temperatures,"quipped Roger - tickets will begoing on sale in September inadvance of the performances atSanta Pola's Casa de Cultura Theatrein Calle Elche on Saturday 7th andSunday 8th November 2009. Watchthis space for more details aboutwhere to get your tickets.
GASP! will be donating profits fromthe play to Costa Blanca charities, but with a difference. "We know thatit's traditional for manyentertainment groups to makedonations to all sorts of local Britishcauses," said Roger, "and we'll bedoing exactly the same. But, to showour appreciation for all the supportwe've received from the Santa Polaauthorities, we also want toreciprocate that support by giving toa local Spanish-based organisation, and we'd like that to be a suitableSanta Pola-based children's group."
For more information, or to find outhow you can join GASP!,email [email protected] call 966 695 043.

Have you noticed that manyareas on Gran Alacant havean area of green land, somewhere near, for thekids to play.
For over 4 years now, residents here on PuertoMarino, have been trying tobuy some land from the developers to use for theirenjoyment.
There are 3 areas of land, allowned by the GA Centre.
1. The area which housedthe temporary school classrooms. This lies idleand un-used
2. The area next to the carwash, not a pretty sight.Cluttered up with junk.
3. Probably the first piece ofland that visitors to our urbanisation, see as theyenter, is the piece of land onthe right, that was the Masaoffices. What an eyesore asyou come onto Gran Alacant.
After many inaffective meetings over a long periodof time, these residentshave almost given up theirfight.
The Town Hall do not ownany of this land, so are fairlypowerless to do anythingabout it.
Why no green land on
Puerto Marino(the area behing the GA Centre as you come into Gran Alacant, on your right)

While shopping for holiday clothes, my husband and I passed a display of swimming costumes.
It had been at least ten years and twenty pounds since I had even considered buying a bathing suit, so I sought my husband's advice.
'What do you think?' I asked. 'Should I get a bikini or an all-in-one?''Better get a bikini,' he replied. 'You'd never get it all in one.'
He's still in intensive care.

We have beenasked to highlightthe
Carabasi Garden areasthat are coming under a bit of abuse.
As you can see from the top picture, compared to the one at thebottom of the page, great strideshave been made to improve thisarea. As we mentioned in an earlierissue, the businesses had all got together and paid to landscape thearea. A couple of the bars now payfor the upkeep of the area, so it is abit dis-heartening for them to see itabused.
Unfortunately youngsters have beentaking the caps off the watering system, uncovering all of thepipework and interfering with thewater system.
It is so nice to see people trying toimprove Gran Alacant and makingeverywhere look nice and so it is abit soul destroying to see areas vandalised.

Hi everyone, this month and next Iam going to talk about Massage.
Swedish Massage this is the type ofmassage that I am qualified in.
Mmmmmm, pure, heavenly and simply divine, just the thought of a massagemakes you feel relaxed.
So what is Massage? Massage is the useof hands, feet or mechanical means to manipulate the soft tissue of the body, inparticular the muscles. Massage is usedfor relaxation, rehabilitation and stimulation of the whole body. It enhancessuppleness of the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress.
So where does it come from? Massage isnot a technique derived from one culturebut from many. People the world over usetouch as a form of communication andcomfort. Animals use touch in a similarway, e.g. grooming their young, lickingwounds and nuzzling each other to showaffection. The use of massage has beenrecorded in China from 3000BC. In Indiamassage has always’ been used as parttraditional Ayurvedic Medicine. At Romanbaths, business life for all members of society, massage was central to the wholeritual. For the ancient Greeks massageformed part of everyday exercise and
fitness. Modern massage is based on techniques used by Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839) a physiologist and fencing master, hewas from Sweden and massage is still referred to as Swedish Massage becauseof his influence. At the end of the nineteenth century massage was battlingfor respectability. The name was oftenused in relation to prostitution and therefore the therapy was not taken seriously. In order to combat this eightwoman founded The Society of TrainedMasseuses in 1884. Massage now has become a reputable and recognized therapy thanks to an increased awarenessand interest in complementary therapies.
What Massage does?Massage is beneficial to all of the bodiessystems. It is a natural and effective way totreat psychological problems (relating tothe mind) such as stress, by enabling thebody to relax, thereby reducing tension itrelaxes the mind, thereby reducing anxietyand its effects and gives a “lift” to our emotions and increases positive feelings, enhancing self esteem. Massage will increase you energy by invigorating allbody systems and reducing fatigue. Massage is also effective in treating thePhysiological (relating to the physicalstructure of the body) by improving skintone and colour by removing dead skincells and improving circulation. DRIVERS LICENCES
Recently a new law by the waspassed by the Spanish Government and will come intoforce in the near future. This concerns all holders of a non-spanish drivers licence. Thislaw was passed to prevent discrimination that can work in thefavour of foreigners resident inSpain and who hold a drivers licence issued in another memberstate of the European Union. If anoffence is committed by the driver
of a vehicle, they will be obliged totransfer their foreign drivers licence for a one issued by theSpanish Traffic department. Oncethe drivers licence is issued it willautomatically carry the number of points lost according tothe offence committed. If an offence is carried out by adriver who is not resident in Spainand has a foreign drivers licence, the Spanish authorities will contact the relevant authorities inthe country where the drivers licence was issued. Therefore if you are resident inSpain it would be advisable to exchange your non-Spanish drivers licence for a licence issuedby the Spanish authorities.Another change was the requirement of a medical certificate for the Spanish trafficdepartment. When an applicationis made for a Spanish drivers licence in exchange for a foreign

drivers licence, it is no longerobligatory to undergo a medicalexamination. You still require amedical certificate when yourenew a Spanish drivers licence. As the laws in Spain change sofrequently (sometimes on anhourly basis!) I'm sure you can understand the frustration wesometimes experience when weapproach Trafico with documentsthat were acceptable the day before, only to be told that there isan ammendment to the previousrequirements and there are nowother documents required!!!When the requirements change, there is no information releasedpreviously so you can be preparedfor the changes. If there are any more changesmade regarding Driving in Spainwe will let the readers of the GranAlacant Advertiser know as soonas possible.
Until next month, safe driving.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
There are some species of birds, particularly among the Warbler and Larkfamilies, which can reduce even themost experienced birdwatcher to a gibbering wreck when he is called uponto actually identify what it is. Sometimesthe final diagnosis can depend on thelength of just one particular feather inthe wing, for example, and the only wayto do that is to actually trap the littleblighter in question and bring out thetape-measure.But as you wander around the Clot, thereis no need to arm yourself with a mist-net and a ruler, as there are plentyof birds which can be identified fromsome distance away by even the novice. And here’s one of the easiest ones – theBlack-winged Stilt, known as Cigueñuelacomún in Spanish (literally – “CommonLittle Stork”). It can be seen anywherethere is water, or even just a damp patch,at all times of the year although there are always fewer around in the winter, whenthe more sensible ones fly south to the warmth of Africa.Unlike your Indeterminate Warbler or Problematic Lark, you don’t have to worry toomuch about the finer points of the bird’s plumage, the Black-winged Stilt (or justStilt as you are allowed to call it because there’s only the one species of this bird inEurope) has the unmistakeable basic blueprint of ultra-long red legs, black wingsand a white body, but the head and neck can be all white to partly black and all stations in between. When they take to flight, those long legs trail behind themmaking them look like mini-flamingoes, and anyone who doesn’t know what aFlamingo looks like has obviously never driven along the N332 through the SantaPola Salinas, or has done so with their eyes shut – not recommended on any Spanish road.Although my picture would seem to show a quite dainty bird, they tend to congregate in ASBO style groups, showing off, calling and bickering with eachother in order to impress the ladies, somewhat like a rowdy queue outside a nightclub. Also they will give any potential predator short shrift; being mobbed byan irate bunch of Stilts with those vicious needle sharp beaks is probably not on apredator’s list of fun things to do.These birds are rare but not unknown in the UK, and some of them have even bredthere. The sad thing is that when they do, for some peculiar reason the male is always called “Sammy the Stilt” in the ensuing publicity. Unless you are underseven years of age, you most definitely ought not to do this when you see one.
See you next month.

The little girl stated that Jonahwas swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiteratedthat a whale could not swallow ahuman; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, 'When I get toheaven I will ask Jonah'.

Please pass on my heartfelt thanks to Murphy ofSol Builders and his pals for the work they carried outon my friend Barbara's house.
As you know Barbara was the lucky winner of thecompetition run by Sol Builders to help an O.A.P. in Gran Alacant. Those whoknow Barbara know what a bad time she has had over the past two years andwhat a sweet lady she is.
Murphy decorated her house and he and his pals carried out some household repairs efficiently and to a very high standard and without any charge whatsoever, which will quieten some sceptics who say you get nothing for free.
Sol Builders have restored Barbara's faith in humanity and given her a new leaseof life Well done Murphy your kind gesture was outstanding keep up the goodwork.
My sincere thanks once again.

Hi Barry and Sandra,
Thank you for the best and always most informative mag in the area!
We are however more dismayed with each passing year as always the hard workand efforts made within G.A. are always channelled "up the Hill" and seldom inthe area of Puerto Marino, which as you may recall in 2001/2 was promised asbeing the "Flagship entrance of Gran Alacant".
During my hapless years serving on the Committee and as President of PuertoMarino we were constantly in pursuit of our missing Green Space and in tidyingup the area. Several meetings on this subject were held at Santa Pola Ayuntamiento and were well represented by Council Officials and local electedMembers. The awareness that usable "green space" area was urgently neededas well as being a legal right to residents on an urbanisation of this size wasfreely acknowledged.
Why, five years later is the fine G.A.Commercial Complex still surrounded by thethree only remaining open spaces being fenced in and neglected?
The impression given on entering by road or even walking around the Urbanisation is one of shabby abandonment.
We are not talking of major funding here-more a request that some commonsense and agreement be applied between the governing bodies at the Ayuntamiento and the Owners!
Keep up your excellent work.Geoff and Marian Roberts.(C/Finlandia 6. Puerto Marino/Gran Alacant.)

KIDS, the little darlingsA Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten
Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to 'honour' thy Father and thy Mother,
she asked, 'Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothersand sisters?' Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered,'Thou shall not kill.'
One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at thekitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of whitehair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head. She looked at her mother andinquisitively asked, 'Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?'Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and make mecry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.'The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, 'Mummy, howcome ALL of grandma's hairs are white?'
The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuadethem each to buy a copy of the group picture. 'Just think how nice it will be tolook at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or'That's Michael, He's a doctor.' A small voice at the back of the room rang out,'And there's the teacher, she's dead.'

I have tried it and itis very good, but I will not be changing my XP computers until they die.
Outlook Express and Hotmail synchronization endingIf you're still using Outlook Express for checking your Windows Live Hotmail, listen up. Microsoft will be cutting off your access in three months. On September 1, 2009, the support for Distributed Authoring and Versioning, theprotocol that Outlook Express and a handful of older clients currently use toaccess Hotmail, will be discontinued. Microsoft originally planned to cut offaccess for Outlook Express users on June 30, 2008. However Outlook Express users got a stay of execution after they complained that it was toosoon. Microsoft's management agreed and gave users another year to makethe migration. Microsoft has stated that these changes are necessary to support the larger and larger mailbox sizes that Hotmail supports. The saythat that due to the Outlook Express programme’s age, it can no longer keepup with the demands placed on it.

Outlook Express was last included with Windows XP. Windows Vista includesWindows Mail, but it does not feature the direct Hotmail connection featuresthat were present in Outlook Express. Windows Vista users who wish to connect to their Hotmail accounts can use Windows Live Mail. Users of Outlook Express who wish to continue using the client can reconfigure theclient to connect using POP3, which was added to Hotmail in March 2009. Aspart of Microsoft's new distribution strategy, Windows 7 does not include anymail client by default, but users can optionally install Windows Live Mail. This change will have no affect on users of Microsoft Outlook 2003/2007 usingthe Office Outlook Connector since it also uses Microsoft's new protocol. However if you're using a previous version of Outlook, you'll need to or reconfigure your clientto connect using POP3. Users who check theiremail using only the web browser based versionof Hotmail, will not have to make any changes totheir account.

This month saw the first annual Novice’sCup competition, held in beautiful weatherat the Monte Mar club. The competition was for bowlers with less

spectators, and we novices were kept inorder by eleven of the more senior bowlers, who acted as markers for the individualmatches. The competition had been well organisedby Competition Secretary Dave Melville, whose good lady Liz, together with Club
Captain John Chapman and his lady Kath, conducted proceedings on the day.On behalf of all of us who bowled, the

“NEW” DISEASES AND CLIMATE CHANGE
CONTINUED FROM LAST MONTH
Sometimes we hear some of thesediseases are “new” or “mutated”, but what really happens isweather conditions have changed, sosemi-tropical diseases which werevery rare some years ago are becoming more and more commonbecause their vectors (fleas, ticks andmosquitoes) are more and more common because the new weatherconditions are better and better forthem.
Another “not new but spread-
ing parasitic disease” which is becoming quite important these lastmonths would be cardiopulmonary infestation by the worm called Angiostrongylus vasorum, or “Frenchheartworm”. As the name indicates, isa very similar disease to classicalmosquito transmitted heartworm, butthe transmission in this case is viasnails, or by drinking contaminatedwater. Anyway, there is nothing toworry about if your dog is havingheartworm prevention, because it covers both worms, so, another danger to be taken into account, anda very good reason to continue

About the suddenly popular(but not new!!) Swine flu, cannot betransmitted to dogs or cats. Cat flu orkennel cough cannot be transmitted topeople, but it’s true that some respiratory diseases in birds and rabbits may affect people, but they arenot newer or more serious than traditional human flu.

Which is the best antiparasitictreatment? It depends on the animaland his life conditions: if he lives indoors or outdoors, if he walks onplaces with lots of plants and bushes,if there are carpets and central heating at home, if he is shampooedvery often, etc. According to all thesevariables, the Vet will decide in everycase which is the best treatment(s) inevery case.
Apart from climate change, another factor which is encouragingthe spreading of vectorial diseases isthe mobility of lots and lots of differentspecies of pets, some of them withoutany kind of control. In case of these“exotic” pets the diseases the maytransmit are more serious, so morestrict controls at the borders would bevery desirable in order to stop illegal

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high schoolreunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her
drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.
My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'
'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took todrinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hearshe hasn't been sober since.'
'My God!' says my wife, 'who would think a person could go oncelebrating that long?'
And then the fight started...

What would happen if one of us dies in Spain?
Ask yourselves these questions:
1. Would you know who to call in the first place?2. Would they know the Spanish system on funerals?
3. Would they be able to cope with local laws and regulations in Spain?
4. Normally funerals are held within 48hr´s. Would family have time to get here?
5. Would funds be readily available to cover all costs?6. Could you cope with the above at the time of great stress?
Makes you think, doesn’t it?
If you can not answer even one of these questions positively thenone of yourPriorities should be to contact SPN today for more

There are many expressionsthat use the verb 'tener' (often inEnglish these use the verb 'tobe'). It is a nice trick to usethem, because once you havelearnt to conjugate 'tener', allyou have to do is add the appropriate word, and you haveanother verb!
For example, 'tener suerte' is 'tobe lucky', so to say 'I am lucky',you simply conjugate 'tener' inthe first person singular present, 'tengo', and then add'suerte', 'tengo suerte'. Thegreat thing is that you can put'tener' into whatever tense youwant, and then add 'suerte'. So,'has tenido suerte' would be'you have been lucky', and 'tendrás suerte' would be 'youwill be lucky'.
Other expressions are:
Tener razón - to be rightTener X años - to be X years oldTener calor - to be hotTener frío - to be coldTener hambre - to be hungryTener sed - to be thirstyTener cara - to be cheekyTener cuidado - to be carefulTener éxito - to be successfulTener miedo - to be scaredTener prisa - to be in a hurry
