FromFather DougThe word precept is rooted in the Latin word praeciperewhich means to teach.

In modern usage, the word is sometimes used to defineexpectations of involvement. It is similar to those rules

we encounter in our corporate, educational, and familyenvironments that mandate mutually beneficial behavior;things like being on time for work, doing your homework,or completing your assigned chores. In functionalsituations, they seldom need emphasis because they areknown and accepted they come into focus only when theyare ignored. When ignored, you effectively remove yourspirit from involvement.

Precepts could be thought of as commanded behavior toassure the health of the collective group for whom they areintended. I cannot think of anything in life that doesnthave some sort of precepts. We have examples in science what goes up must come down; in nature to live means todie; in love to share. Examples abound, the point is thatprecepts are at the root of a functional tree.

We have precepts as Catholics, and we need to considerthem; their observance affects the health and future of ourfaith community.

There are five precepts of the Catholic Church (that can bereferenced in the Catechism). The first three are:

1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of

obligation and rest from servile labor. It is important to

understand that any precept assumes that you arereasonably able to comply. If you are unable to get to thechurch for safety or physical reasons, if you are sick ortending to a sick child or dependant, or camping in thewilderness or in some sort of circumstance where it isunusually difficult or impossible to get to Mass that day,you are not gravely violating this precept. For people

advancing in their faith, there is a desire to attend Mass thatmakes this precept unnecessary. Mass attendance is anacquired desire, especially for those young in faith but aswe grow in faith we recognize our need to worship together

to nourish this growth. In modern times, the rest fromservile labor can be difficult or impossible if taken tooliterally. It is better to consider this as a matter of priority:human work is our gift from God to help our society tothrive, but it should never become an excuse to keep usfrom worshipping. The author of our talents is moreimportant than our self-gain from these talents. God is offirst importance as we love our neighbor as ourself.2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year. We areall sinners; confession helps us to embrace Gods grace tohelp us nip it in the bud. Canon law emphasizes thatgrave sins must be confessed. If you are in the habit of

periodic confession and examining your consciencebetween sacramental confessions, you are significantly lesslikely to become entangled in grave sin. This precept isrelated as a prelude to the next one; both of these preceptsemerged during a time when people were resistant toreceive communion because of their unworthiness, anunfortunate circumstance.3. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at

least once during the Easter season.If we are in a stateof grave sin, if able, we need to receive sacramentalconfession beforehand. There is forgiveness of non-gravesins in reception of this sacrament. This precept defines the

minimum for Eucharistic reception. The Eucharist definesour Catholicism. Receiving our Eucharistic nourishmentwill help us grow in faith and trust of God who will redeemus from our unworthiness.

Next week, I will continue this articlewith the 4th and 5th precepts.

In continuation of recent restructuring to improve office efficiency, a full time administrative assistant was hiredlast November to help in data processing and office reception. Please join me in welcoming, a bit belatedly, ournewest staff member, Carol Pierce. She comes to us with much parish experience from Shakopee and is awelcome addition to our staff. I have asked her to write a brief sketch of her background that follows.

My name is Carol Pierce; I am married to Fred and live in Eden Prairie. We have

two adult children, Allie who graduated from St. Thomas and Joe from Augsburg.

He is planning a May wedding (I am praying for grandchildren)! I have worked in

the neighboring church communities of St. Mark's in Shakopee for ten years and at

St. John the Baptist for three years. I am delighted to be able to serve your faith

community as Administrative Assistant. Please stop by the parish office and

introduce yourself to me.

Mass Intentions Mass intentions may be for the living and the departed,with a designating in the bulletin a deceased person. There is a $10suggested donation per Mass intention. Permission from the sick person or his/her family must be granted before a names inclusion in these prayers. Toschedule a Mass intention, call Jean in the parish office.

Baptism Sacramental preparation is required for all parents. Godparentsand Grandparents are also encouraged to attend. Baptismal prep sessions aregiven every other month and Baptism Masses are held once a month. Call

Jean in the parish office to schedule a child for Baptism and the parents forbaptismal prep.

Penance...Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. or call for an appointment.

Matrimony...Pre-registration required at least one year in advance; marriagepreparation course is required. Initial contact: Deacon Jim Bauhs by phone,952-227-4092, or e-mail: [email protected].

Anointing If you wish to receive an anointing please call the parish office.

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at ourEucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who areunable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer,and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of ourcommunity bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unitethem with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this

need. Please call the Parish Office to let us know if you or a member of yourfamily would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we canschedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longernotified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unlessthe family has requested it. If you or a family member are homebound,hospitalized or in a nursing home and would like a visit from a member of thepastoral ministry staff, please call Jean Rief in the parish office.

Mrs. Lynn Girard is one of the amazingmiddle school teachers at GuardianAngels. She grew up in New Prague,Minnesota, attended Minnesota StateUniversity-Mankato and then received

her Masters from St. Marys and her Master of Sciencelicensure from Hamline University.

She had a wonderful summer with her husband Nate andmanaged to visit their two children, Julia and Steven. Juliaand her new husband Kyle live in Madison, Wisconsin,

her daughter recently started a job as a corporate trainer.Mrs. Girards son Steven is currently attending theUniversity of Wisconsin-LaCrosse where he is majoring inthe biomedical field. The Girards enjoy spending timeoutside and had several opportunities to camp in their popup camper this while enjoying several books where sheestimates she read more than 10,000 pages.

Mrs. Girard enjoys being back at school, she enjoysworking with the students as it keeps her young at heart.She truly appreciates the Middle School students as theyare curious about so many real world things. One of thethings Mrs. Girard has worked on implementing some new

Language Arts standards which she learned about througha variety of workshops this summer. She enjoys her newSmartboard and continues to be amazed at all of what itcan do - thanks SpringFling!

of this ministry that gives comfort to people who face

would like to send out a huge thank

you to Mary Jo Stanoch for her

outstanding years of service as our

Fraternal Secretary. She will be

missed. We are looking for a new

member to take on this roll. Please let

Tina Holmstadt know if you are

inspired to accept this calling.

As you can see by the photos the new parking lot, heated sidewalk, ramp andstairway project is finished. We now have two disabled and six senior parkingstall. The lot was designed with the option to double the parking capacity ifneeded. The walkway, ramp, stairs and landing are mechanically heated so thereis no worry about ice and snow conditions.

This project was estimated to cost $51,320 but will come in at $58,167. Part ofthe increased cost was due to the city lowering the alleys elevation that requiredtwo more steps, plus the additional hand and vertical railings along the ramp tomeet code. For increased safety we installed handrails by the chiller side of the

walkway. We also had to pour a 6 thick retaining wall alongside the existing cinder block wall, which had deteriorated beyondrepair. We also elected to go with two lifts of 2 inches rather than a single of 3 inches of asphalt on the parking lot.

I would like to offer some special thanks to Leo Forner for his expertise on this project. Also a special thank you to Jack Worm andhis city of Chaska crew for the parking lot lights and everything else they helped us with and Ted Janey for upgrading the lights onthe canopy.

We have received donations and I would like to publically thank them. The RummageSale group donated their 2012 earnings to this project along with Brad & Barb Gestach,Leo & Linda Forner, Pearl Kelzer, and Barb & Gary Van Eyll. We will continue to acceptadditional donations for this project. We are contemplating adding some screeningaround the chiller.

I know this disabled and senior parking lot and church entrance is an overdue addition toour parish but I believe it is a project we can be very proud of.

Mad Science is Coming to GA!...

Guardian Angels is offering an after school

hands-on science program for grades 1-6

on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. Classes start

January 29th and finish on March 19th.

Students will have the opportunity to

explore the Earth, Moon, Mars and beyond in this program

featuring student activities from the NASA Academy of Future

Space Explorers Program....

Young Rembrandts!...GA is offering an after school drawing class for students in grades

1-5. Classes will be held on Thursdays from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. starting

February 7th through March 14th. YB teaches drawing with a see-

touch-do method that all kids can succeed with,

learn from and love!
