RAS will also serve as an authorizedKODIAK service center. Headquartered atMönchengladbach Airport near Düsseldorf, RAS joins an existing network of KODIAK salesand service dealers strategically located aroundthe world. Its subsidiary, Aviation Centre inWindhoek, Namibia, is also a KODIAK authorizedservice center for that region.

“RAS is a good fit for Quest and for the KODIAK,” said Steve Zinda, Quest’s Vice President of Sales andMarketing. “Like all of our dealers, RAS brings professionalism, experience and a strong relationship with customers and potential customers in the geographic area they represent.”

RAS’ territory covers 35 countries which include bothEuropean Union (EU) and non-EU member countries. Their territory stretches from Iceland and the UnitedKingdom in the west to Scandinavia in the north and as far south as Greece, Cyprus and Malta.

“This latest addition reflects the company’s commitment tocontinued growth and globalexpansion in key parts of theworld,” Zinda added. “While we do have severalKODIAKs in service there, we have not focused heavily on the European market. Quest has seen strong market acceptance in key marketsegments around the world, including personal use, Part 135 operations, corporate transport, government and humanitarian organizations. The KODIAK is certified in 17 countries, with several additional certifications imminent. The company has also begun working onobtaining EASA certification.

The KODIAK’s rugged aluminum construction combinessuperior STOL performance and high useful load. Withpowerful turbine performance, the aircraft has the ability to land and take off from unimproved surfaces and iscapable of working off floats without structural upgrades.The KODIAK can take off in under 1,000 feet at full grosstakeoff weight of 7,255 lbs. and climb at over 1,300 feetper minute.

A 3-panel Garmin G1000 integrated avionics suite including Synthetic Vision Technology is standard equipment on the KODIAK.

RAS is a recognized leader in aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), as well as aircraft sales, support, and fueling. P Twenty-Ten ‘A7-TBA’ was delivered directlyfrom Tecnam’s Capua, Italy production facility toQatar based ‘Aviation Home’ at Al Khor Airport.The ferry flight routing included stops in Brindisi,Corfu, Crete, Alexandria, Cairo, Hurgada,Madina, Riyadh and Doha in just 25 flight hours.

The landing on Crete’s runway 030 was achievedin a rain storm, wind 350 28 knots, gusting 40 knots.

P Twenty-Ten ‘A7-TBA’ joins a wide range ofTecnam aircraft already in service with AviationHome, Tecnam’s dealer for both the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These include the Tecnam Astore,P2006T Twin and a number of P200JF’s.

NASA selects Tecnam P2006T Twin for‘LEAPTech’ electric powered propulsion tech-nologies evaluation and flight test programme

From Towards the end of March, Tecnamannounced that NASA has selected the TecnamP2006T twin as the airframe on which it will evaluate the potential of ‘LEAPtech’ (LeadingEdge Asynchronous Technology), with the aim of developing safer, more energy efficient, loweroperating cost and greener General Aviation aircraft.

LEAPTech is a key element of NASA’s plan tohelp a significant portion of the general aircraftindustry transition to electrical propulsion withinthe next decade.

NASA will fit an experimental 31-foot aircraft wingwith 18 electric motors placed along the leadingedge onto a Tecnam P2006T aircraft frame. The wing is made of carbon composite, whilethe electric engines are powered by lithium ironphosphate batteries. The wing and electricmotors will both manufactured and integrated on the P2006T airframe by the US based companies ESAero and Joby Aviation.

Researchers hope to fly the modified TecnamP2006T piloted X-plane within the next coupleyears, enabling NASA engineers to easily compare the performance of the X-plane versionwith the standard Tecnam P2006T Twin.

The Air Race 1 World Cup has confirmed thelineup of competitors for the top title in international formula one class air racing. 19 of the world’s best race pilots, representingsix nations, have been signed for the series ofevents in 2015.

The sport of formula one airplane racing, whichhas its origins in the 1940s, challenges pilots in avery demanding test of skill. Unlike other formatsof air racing, these pilots race directly againsteach other at the same time. Eight pilots in eachrace fly at speeds of up to 450kph just tenmeters above the ground to be the first one tocross the finish line. It is a rare and highly-trainedskill set to fly safely and competitively while otherairplanes are trying to pass on the same racecourse. In addition to the extensive traininginvolved, it takes a deep understanding of thephysics of flying and the rules of the sport toqualify.

The Air Race 1 World Cup will showcase theexciting talents of these leading aviators to wide-spread sports audiences as the series touchesdown in Monastir, Tunisia; Lleida, Spain; andReno, USA this year. Others can keep up withthe dramatic contest on television in many partsof the world.

The sport requires each plane be built to a specific formula which covers most aspects ofthe race plane’s characteristics. This ensures afair competition between the pilots. Sales of light sport aircraft in the U.S. for 2014totalled 199, according to numbers compiled andreleased this week by the Light AircraftManufacturers Association. CubCrafters took firstplace, with 50 airplanes, and Van's Aircraft tooksecond place for the year, with 26 copies of itsfactory-built RV-12 sold.

Other top sellers for the year include ProgressiveAerodyne's Searey, Flight Design's CTLSi, andTecnam's P92. In terms of overall market share,Flight Design continues to rank first, with a total of372 aircraft sold, or 13.4 percent of the fleet, andCubCrafters takes second place, with 326 aircraft

delivered. The numbers are based on an analysis ofFAA registration data.

Among the highlights in this year's report is the performance of the Searey amphibian SLSA, with 19registered in 2014, in its first year of deliveries. "Overmany years this company has delivered more than600 kit versions of its amphib," wrote LAMAPresident Dan Johnson at his LSA blog. "They wonFAA audit approval to make SLSA models in late2013 and went right to work filling demand. They'vealso won Chinese TDA approval and may break intothat market, which many expect to explode."

Total sales for the sector have been up and down,with a total of 259 LSA deliveries in 2012. Johnsonpoints out however that the numbers reflect only theUSA market, and he estimates the total fleet deliver-ies worldwide for LSA in 2014 at about 3,000.

NEW AIRCRAFTPROAIRSPORT’sHybrid Microlight Aeroplane

The UK company ProAirsport, has created a hybrid microlight aeroplane that combines a microlight and a glider. The plane’s wheels areelectric so it can taxi on the ground into a landing or starting position, and it has jet turbine engines to allow it to take off, go upwardsand then cruise at its desired altitude.

Once it has achievedflight, the craft’s enginescan be switched off andthen it works as a glideror microlight aircraft.The difference is thatthis new craft is not typical of other kinds of gliders or microlights because it doesn’t have a propeller. The new experimental aircraft is called the GloW.

The main draw of the microlight or glider type of craftis that they must be easy to rig, as well as simple tofly and get it all going in 15 minutes as the standard.The GloW aircraft fits the bill for those requirements.Its creators say that the GloW is meant to be a recreational type of craft that was designed to be across between the glider and a microlight. It is a self-launching glider, but with the addition of the smalljet turbine engines and the small electric motors.

The inventors say that all of this will help keep the

cost of the GloW craft lower and so they hope morepeople can eventually own one. However, eventhough this is one of the expected advantages of theGloW craft, there has yet to be a price determined tosell it. The company hopes to eventually offer it tothe US market as well as the UK market.

Instead of the higher costs of a carbon fiber material,the GloW aircraft’s airframe is constructed of a glassand epoxy composite. This is part of what holdsdown its cost and makes it so lightweight.

The new aircraft’s designcomes as the UK CivilAviation Authority isderegulating one class ofmicrolight aircraft. Thisderegulation includes allsingle seat aircraft thathave a maximum takeoffweight of lower than 300 kilograms or 660 pounds,as well as a stall speed of less than 35 knots.

The GloW aircraft meets those standards and alsothere is no preliminary certification for airworthinessneeded or any sort of inspection that is mandatory.Any pilot certified and having a self-launching motorglider-type of flying license is allowed to fly the GloWaircraft.

The GloW should have an extended range of travelsince it can operate as either a glider or microlightaircraft. Being able to travel with the power off helpsto accomplish these facts. Normal gliders can usual-ly go hundreds of miles and stay in the air for up to10 hours if they have the right air conditions. Havingan engine should allow the GloW to do better thanthese standards.

ProAirsport is presently constructing two versions ofthis GloW demonstration aircraft; one will be for theUK market and one for the US market. They expectinaugural flights to take place by September orOctober of 2015.

By the age of 25 he was the most decorated peacetime naval pilot in history. Jerry served in theRoyal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm for eight years, duringwhich he was presented with the Air Force Cross bythe Queen for outstanding gallantry in search andrescue. Alex flewfrom Sywell regularly during the Second World War, air testing Vickers Wellingtons from the aerodrome. We were very honoured that he agreed to launch ourMuseum.

The Museum originally consisted of three Nissen huts,dismantled at the now-closed RAF Bentwaters and re-erected on site at Sywell. These buildings them-selves are historic artifacts having been used as bombfusing sheds at Bentwaters by the USAAF during WW2.

Displays within theMuseum are regularlychanged andadded to.Amongstother items,2014 saw theacquisition ofa cockpit sec-tion from NorthAmerican Harvard trainer KF532, a type very familiar toSywell skies during WW2 when the aerodrome was abusy training base, plus a cut-away jet engine as usedin the Hawker Hunter thereby revealing its internalworkings.

There is often something extra going on at SywellAviation Museum throughout the open season, withvarious meetings of motoring, military vehicle, or aviation groups. During the winter season closure, aseries of talks or film shows is arranged, one of ourmost memorable in 2014 being a terrific evening withfamous test pilot and author Captain Eric Brown. Development is ongoing. The centre-piece will be provided by theMilitärhistoriches Museum-owned CASA 2.111B(Spanish-built Heinkel He111) which was transportedfrom the MHM’s site at Berlin Gatow airfield viaHamburg and by sea to Rotterdam in mid-March.

The Civil Aviation Administration for China(CAAC) has approved the use of Type IV de/anti-icing fluid for the Chinese market.Demand for the high performing fluid hasincreased in China due to the bad weather conditions experienced in winter and approvalwas granted by the CAAC after stringent testingover a six month period.

The main benefit of Type IV fluid is that it allowsfor extended holdover times – the time an anti-icing fluid will prevent the formation of frostor ice. This makes multiple re-appliances of thefluid unnecessary. Maximum holdover time is especially important in snow conditions. The fluid is monoproplyene glycol based, making it environmentally friendly and readilybiodegradable, as well as non-toxic, non-flammable and easy to handle due to low foaming during application.

Type IV fluid has been used widely throughoutEurope and the rest of the world for the past 15years. Despite winter weather in China being similar to that in North America, the Chinese

market currently uses about ten per cent of thede/anti-icing fluid that is used in the US. The approval of the Type IV fluid can help modernise the Chinese approach to de/anti-icing,which so far has centered on Type I and II fluids.

For decades, turboprop business aircraft customershave really only had one choice with Beechcraft’s twin-engined King Airs commanding the market. The safety factor of two engines was always an important consideration, but that’s now being challenged by single-engined turboprops; notably the Swiss manufactured Pilatus PC-12.

The PC-12 has the significant advantage of lower costsof operation, while attitudes to single engines arechanging. For example, it’s now widely accepted that turboprop engines - notably the PT6Apower plants - are so reliable that aircraft such as thePC-12 are viable alternatives to the King Airs.

Reliability & EconomyPilatus Aircraft, based at Stans, 45 kilometres south of Zurich, is long established and famous for its military trainers and the STOL-capable PC-6 Porter. The PC-12, which first flew in 1991, was designed for a unique market niche, appealing to business users by offering the cabin size of a King Air 200 with single-engined economy. Yet the PC-12 appeals tomany other classes of operator with its large, rear cargodoor and rugged undercarriage to allow landings onunprepared strips.

The PC-12 has a convenient airstair door ahead of thewing and the interior has a flat floor, facilitating cargocarrying or easy loading of aeromedical equipment.Because of this flexibility, the PC-12 is in worldwideservice with organizations such as the Royal CanadianMounted Police, Australia’s Royal Flying Doctor Serviceand the Mission Aviation Fellowship.

The first PC-12 was delivered to Americancustomer Carlston Leasing Corporation in 1994, then the 1,000th example was completed in 2010. Most recently, the 1,300th unit was handed over to California-based, Surf Air in February.

Surf Air has pioneered the concept of the privatetravel club, operating in California and providing its subscribing members with a network of 44 flights a daytaking in eight destinations in the San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles areas.

This unique offering gives Surf Air’s members unlimitedtravel for a fixed monthly subscription and Surf Air saysits business model works, thanks to the reliability andeconomy of the PC-12NG.

Building on SuccessAlthough today’s PC-12NG is externally the same as theoriginal 1994 model, Pilatus has made several changesduring the past 20 years. There have been increases inmaximum takeoff weight and the Next Generation PC-12NG, introduced in 2008, brought a more powerfulPT6A engine and saw the cockpit upgraded with a fully-integrated Honeywell Primus Apex avionics package. Further enhancements to theavionics followed, including optional enhanced vision and theSmartview synthetic vision system.

Last year the aircraft was given electrically-operatedlanding gear, the wireless Connected Flight Deck sys-tem and six new choices for the cabin interior, designedby BMW Group DesignworksUSA.

Multiple AppealThe flexibility of the PC-12 is what appeals to manyBusiness Aviation users. “We regularly transport a jazzband around the country,” explained one Florida-basedoperator, “and the PC-12 is ideal with the four comfort-able cabin seats occupied by the band and all theirequipment safely loaded through the rear door.”

The PC-12 also operates scheduled services with many companies such as Alaska-based Iliamna Air Taxi which uses its two aircraft to provide mail, freightand passenger service to six destinations includingAnchorage, Port Alsworth and Kokhanok. In NewEngland, meanwhile, Tradewind Aviation has nine PC-12s, flying ‘Premium Scheduled Service’ out ofWhite Plains to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

Tailwind also has aircraft based in the Caribbean, operating out of San Juan, Puerto Rico to Anguilla,Antigua, Nevis and St. Barths. Corporate fleet operatorshave added PC-12s into their mixed fleets, particularlyto serve company locationswhich have nearby light aircraft strips which suit the PC-12’s short field andoffairport capabilities.

The aircraft is also very popular with private pilot owners who use it as a flying station wagon, capable ofcarrying largeloads. Typical of these owners is DavidFountain, a businessman based in Halifax, Nova Scotiawho has upgraded through no less than three PC-12s.“There is no other aircraft in the world like the PC-12,”he notes. “The size, speed, range and the Swiss qualityofthe aircraft are exceptional, and it’s a joyto fly."

The PC-12 is to be joined by the twinjet PC-24 whichwill be faster, but as a first-of-its-kind will retain the cargofacilities and unprepared field ability once it enters service. Through its PC-12 model, however, Pilatus hastruly created a niche for itself, and we anticipate the PC-12NG will remain in production for many years to come.

Bell Helicopter, has announced multiple letters of intent (LOIs) with three Middle Eastern operators. The company received a LOI from BBM Inc. for a Bell 505 Jet Ranger X and Bell 525Relentless, K Aircraft Leasing for two Bell 525sand Wallan Aviation for a Bell 525.

“These two aircraft have continued to impress ourcustomers in the Middle East with their highlyadvanced technology and multi-mission capabili-ties,” said Steve Suttles, Bell Helicopter’s vicepresident and managing director of Middle Eastand African sales. “These aircraft will be a perfectaddition to their fleet and will give their customersthe support their operators are looking for.”

The number of Guimbal Cabri G2 helicoptersoperating in the UK increased to twelve at theend of March, with the arrival of serial number 1092 registered G-CILU.

Andy Moorhouse of UK Guimbal importersCotswold Helicopter Centre flew the aircraft back from the Hélicoptères Guimbal factory inAix-en-Provence in southern France accompa-nied by a graduate of their flight training school.

After a fifth participation at the Heli-Expo in theUSA, Marenco Swisshelicopter has confirmed thesignature of 13 additional letters of intent for theSKYe SH09 helicopter, reaching a total of 72 units in the order-book, with deliveries ranging from 2016 and onwards.

Part of these orders are destined to commercialoperators on the American markets for operationsranging from Heli-Taxi in South America to charterand sightseeing in the USA. The remaining ordersare spread throughout the world and include theannounced first sale to a professional charter andtraining operator in South Africa. During the Heli-Expo in Orlando, the team of MarencoSwisshelicopter reported the result of the team-work and accomplishments that were performedin 2014 and which lead to the achievement of thefirst flight as well as the start of the intensive flighttest campaign that is now being actively pursued.

Cotswold Helicopter Centre have confirmed thatthe aircraft will be used predominantly for flight training and self fly hire at their base at Kembleairfield but will also be made available to otherCabri operators should the need arise due to aircraft maintenance or increased work loads.

Andy Moorhouse remarked that, ‘since the Cabrihas become firmly established in the UK, allaspects of operating the aircraft have becomeeasier. The Certificate of Airworthiness for G-CILU was issued less than 24 hours after the aircraft landed and there are now 6 approvedmaintenance organisations offering support forthe aircraft’. Cotswold Helicopter Centre have afurther eleven airframes on order withHélicoptères Guimbal for delivery to the UK.

Kitchener Aero Avionics (KAAV) has confirmedthat they have now been awarded EASA STC inaddition to Transport Canada and FAA STC’salready in hand for their successful and popular“Glass-Cockpit” upgrade to the Eurocopter EC-120 helicopter.

The Garmin G500H Flight Display system withHelicopter Synthetic Vision (HSVT), an AttitudeHeading Reference System (AHRS) and Air Dataare the key components to this upgrade. AlsoSTC’d in the EC-120 are the Garmin GDL-69/69AXM Weather DataLink, an Avidyne TAS-605Traffic Awareness System, and a HoneywellKRA-405B Radar Altimeter system. ENVIRONMENTAL"Dolphin Counting" -Police aircraft in unusual mission

The constant growth of Airborne Technologiesforms the basis for opening up new markets.Their recent project shows the variety of application possibilities of modern surveillanceequipment. The objective of the job was toexplore the dolphin population in the Black Sea.

The project was issued by the Bulgarian ExecutiveEnvironment Agency in order to provide scientificdata in the sense of conservation. The full project`sname is “Filed observations of cetaceans TursiopsTruncatus, Phocoena Phocoena and DelphinusDelphis in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) ofBulgaria”. The public procurement contract wasawarded to Consortium “Black Sea ResearchProgramme NOAH”.

The project area of about 35.000 km² was divided intosegments and flown over by Airborne Technologies`police demonstrator a Vulcanair P68 R, equipped witha Wescam MX10 gimbal in combination with aChurchill Augmented Reality System.

This police surveillance configuration was perfectlysuited for this project as the IR-Sensor was extremelyhelpful for the detection of the dolphins as well as theHD-Sensor for documentation purposes. The record-ing and geo-referenced documentation of the sighted dolphin groups was effected by the ChurchillAugmented Reality System and allows subsequentcounting and/or identification. Due to the used highdefinition optics even the identification of variousspecies was possible.

In order to balance the seasonallycaused changesin the dolphins�behaviour, flightswill be carried out 4 times ayear at regularintervals.

Mr. Karastoyanov , Head of the Consortium imple-menting the project, said, “Airborne Technologieshas proven its ability to think inter-divisionally andhas raised animal counting to a new level.” More information visit – www.airbornetechnologies.at

ORDERSBELL’s Four 206L-4’sfor Air Medical Group Holdings

At the end of March, Bell announcedthat they hadsigned an agreement for the sale of four Bell206L-4s to Air Medical Group Holdings (AMGH),one of the largest independent providers of helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) in the world. The aircraft will be operated by Air Evac Lifeteam for HEMS missions. Deliveriesare scheduled to begin in 2016.

"It’s extremely important to give patients access todefinitive healthcare and these aircraft will help us do just that,” said Seth Myers, president of Air EvacLifeteam. “We are pleased to add the four Bell 206L-4s to our fleet.”

DRONESUK’s - Suffolkpolice could turnto drones to cut helicopter costsSuffolk police could use unmanned drones asan alternative to the expensive helicopter that isdue to be moved from Wattisham Airfield in twoyears’ time. The proposal has been made byPolice and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmorein a bid to cut costs.

The helicopter is provided by the National Police Air Service (NPAS) and currently covers Suffolk andNorfolk from its Wattisham base. However the coststo the police are high – Suffolk has to pay £800,000a year for 250 hours of flights while Norfolk pays£360,000 for the same amount of time.

Mr Passmore told members of Suffolk CountyCouncil that he was seeking a reduction in this cost because it was such a drain on resources. He said: “If we could save £400,000 we could takeon another eight police officers. We have to askwhich is the best value for money?” More information visit –www.suffolk.police.uk
