Vulcanair has decided to leverage itslong experience in designing and manufacturing more complex certifiedmulti-engine aircraft to supply anexceptionally priced single-engine aircraft to allow more pilots to becomemembers of the Vulcanair Aircraft owners family.

Excellent aircraft performance, state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, modern avionics and exceptional value

in terms of acquisition costs make theV1.0 a serious alternative in today’s piston single-engine aircraft arena.

The V1.0’s structure is a combination ofwelded steel tubes arranged in an articulate reticular fashion (main cabin)coupled with a riveted aluminum wing,tail cone and empennage sections. Thisarrangement ensures a strong protectivecabin for pilot and passengers and alightweight structure altogether.

The V1.0 is powered by the 180 hpLycoming IO-360-M1A that is capable ofrunning with AvGas or alternative fuels.To satisfy the owner’s profile, the aircraftis offered with a choice of a fixed-pitchpropeller or a constant-pitch propeller(optional).

The aircraft cabin is extremely functionalwith four seats accessible through threedoors and a luggage capacity of 40 kg(88lb) in a separate and dedicated compartment.

The aircraft cockpit has beendesigned to keep all the commands and switches and circuit breakers in anergonomic position for thepilot and its shape has beendesigned to minimize parallax errors.

The standard avionics package ofchoice features a Garmin G500 coupledwith a GTN650 unit and a JPI digitalengine monitoring system. MidContinent’s latest digital back-up digitalinstrument (SAM) is offered standard inthe aircraft package as well as an

AoA (angle of attack indicator). An optional full IFR version is also available for a small increase in the total aircraft’s price.

Finally the V1.0 is a utility category aircraft, which further expands theV1.0’s ambitions.

In addition to its new single engineproduct Vulcanair Aircraft is progressingwith the continuous improvement of itstwin-engine aircraft line with the

CERTIFICATIONCESSNA TTx receivesFAA certification of FIKI system

Cessna announced on June 24 that it hasreceived Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) certification of the Flight Into KnownIcing (FIKI) system for the high-performanceCessna TTx propeller aircraft.

The FIKI system extends the TTx’s missioncapabilities and enables pilots to file flight plansfor varying weather conditions. It can provide upto two-and-a-half hours of protection from mostice attaching to the airframe, with minimalimpact on the performance.

“The Cessna TTx program has been incrediblysuccessful and certification for the FIKI systemis the next important step in the maturing of theaircraft,” said Brian Steele, Cessna TTx businessleader. “A TTx equipped with FIKI offers greatvalue for customers, allowing their business andrecreational plans to stay on schedule, even in

some adverse weather conditions. The TTx isalready the world’s fastest commercially produced and certified fixed-gear single-engine aircraft, and we are confident the FIKI option will ensure the TTx appeals to an even wider customer base.”

The FIKI system uses glycol-based TKS fluid,which is pumped through micro-drilled holes inthe titanium leading edges of the aircraft’s wings.The propeller and windshield are also protectedwith TKS fluid. The TTx is an all-composite, high-performance aircraft, designed specificallyfor comfort, speed and luxury. The TTx is the firstairplane to be equipped with the Garmin G2000avionics system, featuring a glass cockpit withdual 14.1-inch (35.81 cm) high-definition displays and touch-screen controls.

MAINTENANCEATLAS AirService qualifies asmaintenance facility forCirrus Aircraft

Atlas Air Service has been a maintenance part-ner for Cirrus Aircraft since April 2014 certifiedby the German Aviation Authority (LBA). Theapproval was granted in accordance with EASAPart 145. At the airfield Ganderkesee (EDWQ),Atlas Air Service now offers all owners and operators of aircraft types Cirrus SR20, SR22and SR22T high-quality maintenance support.

Continental Motors says it will take the wrapsoff a new 300-hp aircraft V-6 diesel engine atAirVenture in July, according to CEO RhettRoss. Like the Centurion 2.0 and 2.0S diesels,the new engine leverages automotive technology from Mercedes Benz and is aimedat the high-performance single- and twin-engine segment not yet served by a high-horsepower production diesel engine.

Ross said the company is hoping the engine willfly before AirVenture opens on July 28. Hedeclined to reveal what aircraft the engine will flyin, other than to say it’s a “generic compositelow wing.” Given the horsepower, a Cirrus SR22seems to be the most likely test bed. “My goal isthat we will have a high-fidelity mock up, actualparts and pieces, but not an operable engine, at Oshkosh,” Ross told AVweb this week. “I’mhedging my bets, but I’m hoping to say within amatter of weeks, that test flights have been successfully completed,” he added. The enginewill fit into a product line that the ContinentalMotors Group will shortly be renaming.

Daniel and Michael Combs celebrate in Charleston,South Carolina after just setting a coast-to-coast worldrecord in the Remos aircraft named “Hope One.”

Pilot Michael Combs and his son Danielrecently attempted to set a world record for a coast-to-coast flight in a Remos light sportaircraft. The pair took off from OntarioInternational Airport in California and landedin Mount Pleasant Regional Airport in SouthCarolina 34 hours and one minute later.

"We had suspense all of the way down to theend of the flight, from changing our route 30minutes before take-off on flight day two and apowerful storm system approaching behind us.We actually weren't certain of success until those wheels finally touched down," said Michael Combs.

It was an exciting few days for e-Go at AeroExpo in Sywell. Not only did we give our firstpublic flying displays but Malcolm ended upbeing commentator for the whole airshow, introducing the Trig aerobatic team, theAeromobility glider and the Calidus auto-gyro!

Things went very well on the Friday despite therelatively grey skies and we slotted in betweenthe biplane, glider and autogyro displays todemonstrate our highly capable and livelycanard design. Onlookers were impressed at theroll rate and the fact that within a minute or so ofthe end of the display the aircraft was back onits supports on our stand; “was that the aircraftthat was just up there in the display?!”. A greatadvantage of being so light.

On the Saturday we were about to repeat theperformance when our pilot Keith noticed anelectrical fault. Being sensibly cautious, heretired the aircraft before we taxied out. Werecognise this was a great disappointment tothose who had come to see the e-Go fly but is inline with our careful approach. Come the end ofthe day and as the crowds left, we were able to

investigate and quickly found the offending connection. This was easily repaired but theanalysis continued so we could understand whythis had occurred and how we could prevent ithappening again. Early on the

Sunday, Keith was back in the aircraft and wellbefore the show opened, he took to the skiesagain. This was followed with some high speedtaxiing across Sywell’s rough grass to prove thatwe had overcome the issue. The results weregood, the aircraft was back into the flying display and later that evening was also flownback to the e-Go Centre in Cambridgeshire.

Massachusetts-based Terrafugia is seekingstrategic partners on the mainland to help fundits plan to put its flying car on the streets and inthe air by 2016. In less than a minute,Terrafugia's Transition flying vehicle can be transformed from a car to an aircraft by unfoldingits wings. Powered by a 100-bhp engine, it canreach speeds of up to 105km/h in car mode andcruise at 160km/h in the air.

Terrafugia co-founder and chief executive CarlDietrich, visiting the mainland this month, said hewas looking for equity investors as strategic

partners for the first time. After meeting government economic development groups, officials and potential investors, Dietrich saidthey were interested to know how flying carsmight work on the mainland and what kind oftimeframe he was looking at.

"We have been talking to private equity funds,government funds and individual companiesthat have similar business interest," he said after visiting cities including Beijing, Shanghai,Hangzhou and Wuxi. "What ideally we would like to do is to get two of those three groupstogether."

He said the company, seeking to raise US$30million in its fifth round of financing, had attracted some serious interest from Chineseinvestors. The funds would be used to supportthe delivery of Transition, which made its firstpublic flight at an aviation show in the UnitedStates last year, and to develop the next-generation prototype, the TF-X.

Dietrich said Terrafugia had received some pre-orders for the Transition, priced atUS$279,000, and production was ramping up in order to be able to make deliveries in 2016.The company said it had received US$30 millionin pre-orders, which each required a US$10,000deposit.

If you can get into Kingston upon Thames, Surrey,UK, between now and Saturday 16th August dotake a look at the free First World War exhibitionin the Art Gallery upstairs in Kingston Museum.

The Kingston Aviation Centenary Project has helpedwith information, images, models and paintings forthat part of the exhibition devoted to the aviationindustry in Kingston. This is the first opportunity tosee the two specially commissioned new MarkBromley oil paintings alongside four earlier onesloaned by BAe Systems Heritage.

There is a set of1:32nd scale aircraftmodels built for ourproject by volun-teers at the WestMiddlesex ScaleModel Club and wehave helped sourcelarge models of aSopwith Tabloid andSopwith Pup tohang in the ceiling. There are other aviation imagesdown the staircase and our large John Cutts SopwithBat Boat painting is at the bottom of the stairs.

Kingston Museum is on Wheatfield Way between theCattle Market car park and Kingston Library. It is a short walk from the shopping centre, railwayand bus stations. RENOVATION

The Dornier Do 17 one year on

Tuesday 10thJune 2014 marked the first anniversary of the moment the world’s last surviving Dornier Do 17 was successfully lifted from thebottom of the Dover Straits. The breath takingmoment the aircraft surfaced from the water wascaptured live on TV and sparked interest fromaround the globe.

Significant work has taken place in recent months onthe airframe’s major assemblies. The forward fuselage has been de-riveted and separated from thetail boom, the latter section having suffered majordamage during its period on the seabed. The separation of these two sections has enabled theconservation team to focus effort on the forward fuselage interior and this is progressing well. The spraying process has also proved effective onthe propellers and both units will shortly be placedon purpose built stands in readiness for the nextstage of their conservation.

Visitors to the RAF Museum Cosford are able to viewthe Dornier and watch the process through viewingpanels in the tunnels. For visitors wishing to gaineven closer access to the aircraft, volunteers from the Museum’s Aerospace Museum Society will be working on Dornier components every Tuesday andThursday between 10:30am and 3:00pm in theMuseum’s Test Flight Hangar. It is a great opportunity for aviation fans to get close to this historic aircraft and to ask the volunteers questionsabout the vital work they are carrying out.

The Dornier Do17 Interpretation Zone, located next to the Dornier hydration tunnels and supported bywargaming.net, allows visitors to the Museum toexplore the background of this legendary aircraft andtells the story of its recovery and the conservationprocess. At the 2012FarnboroughAirshow, ourplans to buildthe famous1930s HandleyPage HP42 airliner asoperated byImperialAirways (predecessor to British Airways) were finalised.Our team, Team Merlin, operates rare andunique aircraft, the most famous being the 1994World War One bomber replica – the VickersVimy. This aircraft re-enacted 3 historic flights toAustralia, South Africa, and Alcock and Brown’sfirst ever non-stop transatlantic flight.

The knowledge and infrastructure from this projectwas used as a stepping stone for our next project‘Imperial 42’, an airliner replica which is twice thesize making it the world’s largest bi-plane. TheHandley Page HP42 was the ‘Concorde of its era’,and symbolized the golden age of travel in the1930s.

This project has taken 20 years of world-wideresearch to get to this stage where we can now saythe entire infrastructure and technical details are inplace, and we are now in a unique position to startthe aircraft build. We will also be opening theworld’s first Imperial Airways Collection in a coupleof months’ time to run alongside the project, wherewe have, amongst other things, the largest collection of original artefacts, a Croydon Airportstyle foyer, and a replica of part of the interior HP42cabin for people to sit in and see what travellingwas like first hand.

At the present we have some material sponsors forthe build and once flying we have interest frommany sectors in and out of aviation, from fashionhouses who originally used the aircraft, to sportingevents and already a major part in a planned feature film. Cessna

Milestones were announced at Cessna in thecertification programme of the new CessnaCitation Latitude. The FAA has granted a TypeInspection Authorization certificate and the firstproduction unit has joined the flight test programme.

The TIA for the Latitude is a significant step forwards as it allows Cessna to begin accumulating flight hours that will apply towardofficial certification. More than 60 flights and 130 hours have been flown in the CitationLatitude test program to date. Cessna engi-neers developed an all-new fuselage for theCitation Latitude. Certification for the mid-size jet is expected in the second quarter of 2015.

The Avanti EVO, an upgrade of the Avanti twinturboprop, has been announced by PiaggioAero. With redesigned engine nacelles, winglets,a reshaped front wing and five-blade compositeScimitar propellers, the EVO will provide betterperformance, enhanced safety features andgreater passenger comfort compared to theAvanti II.

It will also be significantly quieter externally. Withthe improved performance the EVO will climb 3percent faster to its ceiling of 41,000 feet, andthe range in standard configuration is 1,470nm,a 17-percent improvement. CERTIFICATIONCESSNA Citation M2receives EASA certification

Cessna announced towards the end of June that the company has received EuropeanAviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification forthe Citation M2 business jet, paving the way fordeliveries to begin immediately. This latest certification comes just two weeks afterCessna’s receipt of EASA certification for itsCitation Sovereign+.

“We have had significant interest from Europeancustomers for the Citation M2, due to its size,speed and range,” said Chris Hearne, vice president, Jets. “This aircraft can easily handlenon-stop legs throughout the region such as

Paris to Athens or Zürich to Moscow. This news,coupled with the recent EASA certification of theCitation Sovereign+, means that customers inEurope have more options to meet their business aviation needs within the Citation family.”

The Citation M2 has a maximum cruise speed of404 knots true airspeed (460 miles per hour)and a range of 1,580 nautical miles. It can operate at airports with runways as short as3,210 feet and will climb to 41,000 feet in 24minutes. The Citation M2 is certified for single-pilot operation with room for seven passengersand features two Williams FJ44 engines.

This announcement reflects the company’sfocus on continued investment in general aviation’s most extensive product line up. New Citation products coming to market withinthe coming year include the Citation CJ3+,Citation X+ and Citation Latitude.

SUKHOI Superjet100 AchievesCertification for CAT IIIICAO

SUKHOI Superjet 100.

On June 20, the Aviation Register ofInterstate Aviation Committee (IAC AR) confirmed the capability of the SukhoiSuperjet 100 aircraft to execute automaticlanding under CAT IIIa ICAO.

This Supplemental Type Certificate allows theSSJ100 landing in complicated weather conditions when runway visibility does not

exceed 175m, including landing with up to 10 m/s flank wind, when the airport has the respective certification and crews are certified to perform flights under CAT IIIa minimum.

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company successfully performed wide range of tests to evaluate theSSJ100 aircraft characteristics in respect of automatic landing under CAT IIIa using all combinations of operating weights and centers-of-gravity, with simulation of crucialengine failure at different segments of descentpath and at stiff wind.

The total test programme within the period fromNovember 2011 till December 2013 exceeded250 hours and involved three test SSJ100s. The total amount of automatic approaches during performance of flight tests amounts to425. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 capability to perform landing in bad weather conditions andlow visibility becomes a considerable competitive advantage for the airlines whichhave this type of aircraft in their fleet.

TRAININGHELI AIR’s newmodular in-house groundschool training courses

Heli Air, the UK largest light helicopter company, is delighted to announce that it is expanding its training services to include full-time ground school courses alongside itswell established flying training.

Available from October this year, the newcourses will be professionally delivered in amodular format at the company’s purpose-

built facilities at Wycombe Air Park. The modules will include PPL(H), ATPLground school studies, and structured hourbuilding followed by CPL(H) with options for IR(H) or FIC(H).

For candidates who already have a PPL(H) or CPL(H), Heli Air will also be offering aground school plus CPL package and aground school-only package.

In partnership with Buckinghamshire NewUniversity, Heli Air can also provide theopportunity to gain a BSc in Air TransportManagement alongside its structured flighttraining.

APPRENTICESHIP22 Bristow engineering apprentices complete initial 8 monthstraining

Aberdeen-based helicopter operator, BristowHelicopters Ltd, has confirmed that its latestintake of 22 engineering apprentices havesuccessfully completed their initial eightmonths of training at the LRTT College inGloucester. The future engineers were selected from a field of more than 1,300 applicants last spring after a rigorous assessment process in Aberdeen.

The apprentices, who hail from across theUK, are now set to undertake the next stageof their induction training in the Granite City.Ten of the apprentices are destined to support Bristow’s oil and gas operations, and another ten will join its UK Search andRescue (SAR) service. Two apprentices arelooking forward to a career at Bristow’sDesign and Production Centre in Redhill,Surrey.

Bristow was awarded the UK SAR contractby the Department for Transport, and willdeliver SAR helicopter service on behalf ofThe Maritime & Coastguard Agency from tenbases across the UK, beginning April 2015.One SAR apprentice will go on to work ateach of the ten SAR bases.

Helicentre Aviation Academy has announcedit will be awarding several helicopter pilottraining scholarships in 2015.

The company has so far awarded four scholarships to trainee helicopter pilots andwill this summer will be awarding a further five scholarships totalling around £100,000 in value.

By 2015 a total of fifteen training scholarships will have been awarded.

The 2015 scholarships which will providefunding to selected pilots across variousstages of their training will be awardednext summer, although the final deadlinefor applications is yet to be released.

The scholarship programme is open totrainee pilots at Helicentre AviationAcademy and the entry criteria, as well as confirmation of the number of scholar-ships to be awarded will be announced inthe next month.

Bell have recently delivered a new Bell 429 fromtheir facility in Czech Republic to Air TransportEurope, one of the main operators in Slovakia.The helicopter - serial 57143 - was test flown inPrague as OK-BHY (as seen in photos here) and was delivered as OM-ATR.

This is the second Bell 429 operating inSlovakia - the first is serial 57087 with Opera Air as OM-TIP. The heli was shown at the recent European Helicopter Show,which took place at Hradec Králové in theCzech Republic between 19-21 June.

OPERATING LICENCEUK’s PremiAirAviation Services operatinglicence reinstatedThe CAA have advised in their snappily-named"Official Record Series 2, Number 2131" - dated10th June 2014 - that PremiAir Aviation Servicesof Blackbushe have had their Type B OperatingLicence reinstated effective from 23rd May 2014.It had been suspended six and a half months earlier, as we reported at the time.

PremiAir have yet to confirm what helicopters they will be operating. Although they did operatea customer's AS355N into London Heliport atBattersea on 13th June using the call-sign"Premiair 02", so we assume AS355 is included.

PremiAir have one AS355F2 registered in theirname - G-PASL - but they are not the owner as it is annotated "Chartered" in the CAA record. This aircraft is specifically being configured forNight Vision under a joint venture the companyhas with ASU.

PremiAir's Chief pilot John Slater recently completed his Type Rated Examiner /Instrument Rated Examiner qualifications with HelicopterServices at Wycombe Air Park.

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulanceannounced this afternoon that it had carriedout its 10,000th mission.

The Charity’s EC135 helicopter, Pilot MaxHoskins, Paramedic Mark Williams andConsultant Doctor Ian Mews attended the incident which took place in the Shaftesbury areain mid-June.

Bill Sivewright, Dorset and Somerset AirAmbulance Chief Executive Officer said, “Everyone of the missions we fly is the result of some-body suffering a potentially life-threatening injuryor accident and it is not a number that we celebrate. It simply demonstrates the need for an Air Ambulance that services the counties ofDorset and Somerset.

During June, the UK’s Guardian newspaperpublished an extensive profile of London'spolice helicopter unit. The contract calls for CHC to operate twoSikorsky S-92 aircraft on behalf of Statoil. The helicopters will fly from Aberdeen orSumburgh on the Shetland Isles to the Statoiloperated Mariner field, 250 kilometres off thenortheastern coast of Scotland.

The contract has a duration of five years, plus an extension option for up to three years. The service is anticipated to begin in mid-2016.

“We are pleased to haveentered into this contract,meeting our needs for safeand efficient transportation

to the Mariner field, our first operated field development on the UKContinental Shelf (UKCS),” said GunnarBreivik, managing director of StatoilProduction UK and head of the company’s Aberdeen office.

“We will have substantial offshore activity as the Mariner project enters the hook-up and commissioning phase in 2016 and production starts in 2017,” said Mr. Breivik.

“We are also pleased with the flexibility in the contract, including options for servicing our exploration activity and possible expansion on the UKCS.”

RESEARCHFAA creates newtype of experimental certificate

Sikorsky and FAA delegates with the SARA helicopter.

On March 25th, SARA, the Sikorsky AutonomyResearch Aircraft, reached yet another mile-stone as the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA)granted a new type of experimental certificate– Optionally Piloted Vehicle ExperimentalCertificate for the aircraft. The event was a keystep in the process as SARA makes her way tofull autonomous flight.

Members of the FAA were fixated on the aircraftfor a few hours as they reviewed all the one-of-akind technology that is being used in the helicopter. More than just the look of the heli-copter, the FAA was presented data that provedSARA is fully capable of flying ‘pilot optional’.

France certifies EC175Flight NavigationProcedures Trainer

EC175 Flight Navigation Procedures simulator.

The EC175 Flight Navigation ProceduresTrainer (FNPT III) has been certified by theFrench Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) and isnow operational. Airbus Helicopters pilotinstructors are already undergoing training inanticipation of the first student pilots who areexpected to arrive early this summer.

The EC175 FNPT is just one of the training solutions that Airbus Helicopters has set up tosupport the entry into service of the EC175. The company has already introduced practicalmaintenance training on a Practical MaintenanceTraining Device (full-scale aircraft) for futureEC175 maintenance technicians. Similarly, customers’ pilots will soon be trained on theLevel D Full Flight Simulator manufactured byINDRA, which is scheduled for deployment priorto the first deliveries this summer.
