The Galician Biotechnology
Cluster (GBC)
Biotechnology is advancing at
such a pace that major
business opportunities arecontinually becoming available.
With the aim of fostering thissector in Galicia, the GalicianBiotechnology Cluster (GBC)
was created in 2006.
Currently the Cluster contains31 companies working in
sectors as diverse as thefoodstuff industry,
aquaculture, agriculture andbiomedicine, to name but afew.
The GBC appeared with theaim and obligation of
promoting Galicia as a relevantregion within Europe in termsof biotechnological capacity,
thanks to the availability oflatest-generation technologyand multi-disciplinary sciences.
Amongst the maincommitments of the GBC are
promoting the development offunctional foodstuffs. Themarket for products of this
kind is currently growing at an
annual rate of 14%, and it isexpected to have a turnover of
22,000,000,000 throughoutthe world by 2010.

the development ofBiotechnology in Galicia
In Galicia, the foundationshave been laid for the
Biotechnology sector to find allit needs to develop andexpand in our region. Themost important of these

sufficient critical mass interms of biotechnology

number of high-quality OPIs(Public Research Bodies)
within the GalicianBiotechnology Platform
The availability of highly
effective mechanisms for thefunding and financing of

from Galicia towards the
Biotechnology sector is theparticipation of the GalicianInsti tute for Economic
Promotion (IGAPE) in BIO2006 and 2007, held in
C h i c a g o a n d B o s t o nrespectively.
Also, the Spanish Ministry forIndustry and the GalicianInstitute for Economic
Promotion (IGAPE) channel aseries of attractive incentives
through special programmes
such as the Ferrol Plan, giving
investors access to non-refundable grants of up to
30% and 15-year loans at 0%interest.
This has helped to makeGalicia an ideal destination for
investors seeking a location inline with the requirements of
the twenty-first centur
