Montana 4-H Congress

Join Montana 4-H for Montana 4-H Congress, “Shipwrecked - Leadership to the Rescue”

July 11-14, 2019 on the Bozeman campus of Montana State University.

You and 300 of your closest friends have been shipwrecked on a deserted island when your 4-H cruise liner went down somewhere in

Pacific. Your only way off the island is to make some new friends, learn some new things and utilize your leadership skills to work together

and charter a new course for home.

We are sure this will prove to be the highlight of your 4-H year. If you aren’t sure what 4-H Congress

is all about, just ask one of the many Montana 4-Hers that have been coming to congress.

Planning to Attend Fair?

All project record book interviews will take place on Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12 from about 4pm to 8pm. This includes horse, large and small animal, and indoor projects. In past, these interviews happened on Monday and Tuesday of Fair Week, but with so many fair activities taking place on the Monday and Tuesday that it left little time for many kids to actually fit a record book interview in. Project Record Book Interviews are required for every child in every project they plan to exhibit at fair. No exhibits will be turned in, this is just the record book interviews. Market Livestock Committee The next Market Livestock Committee Meeting is May 7,

2019 at 6:00pm at the Gallatin County Extension Office.

Horse Committee Horse Committee Meetings have been moved to the last Monday of the month. We meet at 6:30pm at Rocky Mountain Supply's main office 210 Gallatin Farmers Av. behind Whalen tire in Belgrade. Everyone is welcome. And we still need more help. Hope to see everyone there.

Unlimited Leader Council Meeting

Congratulations to all our competitors at Communications Day and Stir-Ups! We saw a wide array of demonstrations and could smell all the delicious skillet meals being prepared for the cooking contest. ULC is proud to offer scholarships to help our senior awardees attend Congress in July.

This month our committees have been hard at work preparing for our upcoming events. We are partnered with Park County again this year to host our SUPER Heroes and Villains 4-H Summer Camp at Luccock Park Camp in Livingston, MT. Meanwhile, the Fair committee has come up with a great line-up of delicious treats for our Fair Concessions Stand. We are sure you will “treasure” the great food they have to offer!

In observing April’s Service Month, ULC launched a “Help-O-Meter” to track all that Gallatin County 4-H does to help our community! Remember to log your volunteer hours for your club or projects, we would love to display this at Fair.

As always, ALL 4-H members and volunteers are invited to attend. If you have questions or want to come and see what ULC is all about, please come and join us!

Gallatin County 4-H Foundation The next meeting is Thursday, May, 23 at 6:00pm at the Extension Office. This group provides funding and scholarships to 4-H.

We are excited to share that Gallatin County 4-H Foundation is part of the Give Big Gallatin Valley event. This event is a unique and fun way to give to your local Gallatin Valley non-profits. Dag Nabids

The Dag Nabids will collect food items at Town and Country Foods (1611 S 11th

Ave) for the Gallatin County Food Bank on Saturday, May 11 from 3-5pm. If

members want to bring something that demonstrates what 4-H is or small

animals to the event this would be a good opportunity to educate the

community. Please set aside Tuesday, May 7th for an evening meeting at

6:30pm. Meeting will take place at the MSU room 138 of the animal bioscience

building (1 block south of 11th and college). No meeting following May 11

community service event.

Belgrade Pioneers

The April Meeting of the Belgrade Pioneers 4-H Club was held on Thursday, April 11, at the Belgrade Middle

School Cafeteria. For our April meeting we had soup and sandwiches. As we ate dinner, we broke into our

committee groups to talk about future events – education, recreation, and fundraising. At 6:30 we joined

together for our business meeting. The education and recreation committees announced some details for the

club trip to the Lewis and Clark Caverns, which will be June 15. We approved the community service

committee’s proposal to make baskets for the retirement home. They are going to get a list of items together

for us to donate and we will put the baskets together this spring. We talked about the fair and we got a list of

all those who were interested in being on the fair committee. We will start planning soon. We also talked

about our other service activity for the month – serving in the petting zoo for the Easter Egg Hunt in

Manhattan. We got a list of willing helpers as well as people who could bring other animals. We are looking

forward to this event! For our activity, we practiced for Communication Day. Then we filled eggs for the

Easter Egg Hunt in Manhattan. We had a lot of fun!!

Clubs

Gallatin Gallopers

The April Gallatin Gallopers meeting was held April 15th, 2019, in the MSU Animal

Bioscience building. After the reports in old business was an update on our Butter

Braids fundraiser. The club raised over 1,000 dollars! Prizes were awarded to our top

sellers. Also, we talked about our Eagle Mount community service day and members

who went shared what they did. On April 20th club members participated on an

amazing on the ground horsemanship clinic taught by MSU students at the Bob Miller Pavilion. Secondly our spring

riding lessons are scheduled for May 3rd and 4th at Cedar Ridge Equine. Also, Communication day and Stir-Ups

cooking contest are scheduled for April 27, 2019. The club members also voted at our last meeting to develop

committees for members and will consist of 4 areas: Fundraising, Community Service, Recreation and Education. Next

meeting there will be a club T-shirt and jacket sign-up. Our next meeting will be May 20th, 2019 in the MSU Animal

Manhattan Clever Clovers

Many people enjoyed the 4H field trip to the Bozeman airport on Thursday, April 18. On

Thursday, April 18, at 9:30am, the Manhattan Clever Clovers took a field trip to the

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. First, the club was taken on a tour of the

building, and they were told about the new expansion and how it has grown. Next the club

went out on the tarmac underneath a boarding gate to see a plane dock. They went back to

their vehicles and drove to meet their guide at the control tower where

they were split in tow groups. One went to the top of the control tower to

learn about the radar and how the controllers direct traffic, while the other

went to the fire station to learn how they dealt with fires. then the groups

switched places and the trip was over.

Hyalite Hawks

Our Hyalite Hawks Club met on Sunday April 28th to discuss what to do with our leftover fundraising

money. We came up with the going to the new trampoline park or swimming. After the main part of the

meeting we played a few games and ate snacks provided by the Burrows family! Our next meeting will be

on May 19th. Stay tuned for more information.

Gateway Challengers

The Gateway Challengers met on Monday, April 8, at the Gateway Community Center. We played a game first, then said

the pledges and did roll-call. For old business, we read the minutes from last meeting. Then we discussed our new

business. After we adjourned the meeting, we listened to two new demonstrations, “How to make a calming jar”, and

“How to make a Dutch braid.” Finally, for a spring garden craft, we decorated flower pots, and planted basil in them.

Our next meeting will be on May 13, at 6:30 p.m., at the Community Center in Gateway.

Willow Creek Wranglers

Our monthly meeting was held on April

8. We discussed and finalized everything for

our Community Egg Hunt. We learned how

to make "No Bake Cookies" and tips on how

to trim goat hooves. Our Community Egg

Hunt was a great success. We had a lot of

people attend, and we distributed over 600

eggs! The children had a lot of fun finding

eggs and winning prizes. There will be no

Shining Mountaineers

The Shining Mountaineers visited our friends at the Gallatin Rest Home to play BINGO with the residents. Our

club donated the prizes for the event, and enjoyed the afternoon playing BINGO, laughing and sharing with the

residents.

On April 5th, 2019, we had our monthly club meeting. We started with signing cards for the elderly at Gallatin

Rest Home. After that we began our business meeting. A few members gave reports of how Rec Lab went and also,

how Bingo went at Gallatin Rest Home. We were reminded that our Record Book Interviews will be held a little

earlier this year, on July 11th and 12th. After the business meeting, we had our Practice Demonstration Night,

where most of the members presented their demonstrations to the club. We gave feedback and tips to them, to

help them get their presentations ready for County Communication Day, which will be held on Saturday April,

27th. Our next meeting will be at Belgrade Middle School, on May 3rd at 6:00.

These are the last remaining workshops that we have planned for the Beef Project. Please remember that everyone must attend 3 approved workshops in order to be eligible to participate in the fair and sell a market animal.

Baking/Cooking

Our next, and last, meeting for this 4-H year will be held at the MSU health & food lab located in room #120, Herrick Hall, S. 7th Avenue on Tuesday, May 14th, from 6 - 8:15 pm. We will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with some Spanish inspired foods to round out our cooking year at the lab... la fiesta! At the meeting, we will discuss getting together for another meeting to plan the indoor exhibit for the fair. We need to show off all of the fun and great food you've cooked and baked throughout the year! Our club is also providing the dessert for the buyer's BBQ at the fair this year, so we need some helpers to make 600 desserts and help with cleanup. Cake Decorating

Hello, Cake Decorators! Our May meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 28 May, at 6:30 pm in the Gallatin Extension Office. (This is a change from our regular schedule a bit due to some scheduling conflicts.) At our meeting, we will play with gum paste! We’ll learn how to make sturdy flowers and other designs. If you have a rolling pin and/or cutters, you’re welcome to bring them. For this meeting, you do not need to bring a frosted cake/cupcakes since we will just focus on making gum paste designs. Goat

Hey Everyone!! May is a busy month, everyone should have their goats by now and the fun begins! Our MANDATORY tagging is May 5th from 2-4 at the fairgrounds in the wash bay. If you dont have your goats you will not be able to participate in the fair! On May 22nd there is a Dairy goat meeting about the "ins and outs" of milk production at 6:30pm. Location TBA. We will also be having a makeup showmanship depending on weather so that will be announced through email! See everyone soon! Animal Quality Assurance (AQA) All youth that are taking a market animal (planning to sell their animal at the auction) for the first time need to take AQA. Dog Obedience

Our program will meet at MMK on Wednesday's, we will be offering two classes to start, a 4 P.M. and 5 P.M. after 6 weeks of training these two classes will combine into one class that will start at 4:30. Most classes will last about 45 minutes.

Dairy Cow

Thank you to all the dairy cow project members and parents who participated in the Hoard's Dairyman Judging Contest! We learned about dairy characteristics and had fun placing the different classes. Our results should be ready shortly. Also thank you to Dr. Tim DelCurto at MSU Animal and Range Science for teaching us about the cow digestive system.

For our May workshop will be working on our showmanship and knowledge skills. Instead of having one large workshop, I would like to work with everyone individually. Therefore, please call me to arrange for a time that works for you in May to do a one on one showmanship practice.

The project will also be meeting twice in June. Please mark your calendars for Saturday June 15 for a fundraiser opportunity for the project and another date to be determined by the first part of May. I will provide additional information via email/text to the members when the details have been confirmed.

Remember you must attend three workshops prior to July 1 in order to participate in the fair!

Gallatin Twisters Horse Drill Team

Our Twisters Horse Drill Team continued to work hard at the annual Fuzzy Horse show on Saturday March 30th. On the 27th and 28th of April, we performed at the Three Forks Junior/High School rodeo! Our next practices will be Fridays May 17th and 31st with an optional practice on the 3rd. Stay tuned for more information.

Horse—Jumping & Dressage

Meggan Holloway with Holloway's Pretty Good Horse Barn has graciously agreed to join me in teaching and providing a wonderful facility for us to work from this winter. We will be signing up riders in small group lessons on the dates below to ensure the best learning opportunities for your kids. Lessons will cost $15/person paid directly to Holloway's. Required proof of Flu/Rhino WITHIN 6 MONTHS!!! (must have been given within 6 months and a minimum of 2 weeks prior to clinic). Get it done now!!! We look forward to seeing you! The next Poultry project meeting will be Tuesday, May 21st from 6-7:30 at the fairgrounds. Building 2. This meeting will be an opportunity for you to practice showmanship and learn more about showing your birds at the fair. There will be trivia practice for juniors and seniors. Rabbit

In May we will meet Thursday, May 16, 6:30 at the Fairgrounds. If you need any bunnies to be tattooed, please bring them at 6. All bunnies must have a tattoo for the Big Sky State Fair. Also, please bring $1-2 to cover tattooing materials, if you bunnies are being tattooed. At the meeting we will have a guest speaker sharing info about breeding rabbits, raising kits and genetics. We will cover information about the Fair and preparing for Fair. If you need help with handling or showing your rabbit you can bring your bunny to the meeting and we will offer assistance at the end of the meeting to all who would like help.

In April several members were involved in community outreach. At our April meeting we made Easter cards for some of the residents at Highgate Senior Living and on April 20 we had Bunnies At The Mall. Many kids and families walking through the Mall were able to a pet a bunny, take pictures and ask our members about their project. Great Job. Lyndsay Herron & Travis Collins will meet with all interested parents and members to answer questions about their projects and the fair. This will be held at the fairgrounds following the Junior Level Showmanship Workshop.

Monday, May 20 Posters, Marketing, Record Books, Workbooks: Fairgrounds Building #4, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 19 Clipping, Fitting with Ryan Nuss/Sophia Wass: Location TBA, 6:30 p.m. Scale Protocol: The Swine Committee has a scale that we check out. If you are interested in getting on the list, please contact Travis Collins, 570-3283. Please communicate with any families living in your area and coordinate the use of the scale. Average Daily Gain Contest (ADG): The Swine Committee Presents the ADG Contest! This is for all 4-H members, with the goal to increase awareness of your feed efficiency efforts, and to complete your record books. How to Participate: We will gather data at three points: 1. Starting weight (turn in by May 1) Send your starting weight and the date the weight was recorded for each tagged animal (identify by tag #) to Lauri at [email protected] 2. Mid Weight & ADG report (Due June 5) Calculate your Average Daily Gain with an accurate weight recorded between May 20 and June 5, email the weight, date, and ADG to Lauri at [email protected]. A worksheet will be emailed to all swine project families in mid-May that shows how to calculate Average Daily Gain.

3. Final Weight & ADG (Due July 17 at the fair) Calculate your Average Daily Gain with the final weight determined at Fair Weigh In. Turn in the calculation to Lauri. Winner: The 4-H Swine Project Member with the best ADG will win the First Annual ADG Contest, and receive a special award. There will be a drawing of several prizes for all participants. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please contact a member of the 4-H Swine Committee. We will do our best to assist! Merle Farrier, Lee Nuss, Lauri Olsen, Andrea Wass, Jennifer Hiester, Brad & Lyndsay Herron, Kelly Pavlik, and Dave Huntley, and Travis Collins. Animal Quality Assurance (AQA) All youth that are taking a market animal (planning to sell their animal at the auction) for the first time need to take AQA. Youth must attend AQA once as a Junior (ages 8-13) and once as a first year Senior (ages 14 and older). May 2 6-8pm will take place at the Gallatin Fairgrounds. If you can’t make the Gallatin County make up, Park County will be hosting on May 11th at 1pm at the Park High School Rec Plex.

Shooting Sports

To be eligible to enroll in 4-H Shooting the 4-H member must be 9 by October 1st of 2018. Shooting Sports Fee - $25.00 per shooter, family of three or more $60.00. Shotgun will be at Manhattan Wildlife Association Trap Range located at 337 Logan Trident Road in Logan. It is strongly recommended that the participant be 10 years of age. For more information contact Scott Francis – 581-6845. The Muzzle-loading Project will be determined later in the shooting season. The Hunting & Wildlife Project will be determined later in the year. Please contact Scott if you are interested.. It is recommended but not required that the participants be 12 years of age and have been in Hunter’s Education.
