Who are the MobiLife users? Who are the MobiLife users?

People in a family who are juggling multiple roles⇒ Family members⇒ Plus their reference groups

• Extended family (grandparents, etc.)

• Work contacts– colleagues, peers, customers, etc.

• Friends

All these relationships combined in social network structures:⇒ “Contemporary Western communities [as] loosely bounded,

sparsely-knit, ramifying networks of specialized ties”(B. Wellman)

Work-life balance: contrasting viewsWork-life balance: contrasting views

Perception of an imbalance as work pressure increas es⇒ Competition, information load, technological change

• “Longer hours, more exhaustion and the growth of evening and weekend work leave less scope for “quality” family time” (D. Guest)

eWork pros and cons⇒ More freedom and productivity for a new class of professionals

• the power to make decisions about where and when to work is an expected part of defining one’s everyday life (e.g. “Creative class”, R. Florida)

⇒ Overwork undermining family life• Roles can become blurred when people both work in the home

and live there as parents

User evaluation: interview methodUser evaluation: interview method

Objective⇒ Gather user feedback about the tasks/behaviours

shown in the scenarios

User results:working at home

User results:working at home

Mixed feedbacks, some positive...⇒ Effective and convenient interaction with multiple devices

• Move easily across different rooms and still have consistent access and functionalities

• Seamless access to the same service as you move across different devices

...and other skeptical or overtly negative⇒ eWork turns overwork in a bad habit

• “Do they work all the time in this family?”

⇒ It could be boring - you miss the social milieu

⇒ Or even dangerous• Too many electronic devices in the house, idea of

“media free” zones

User results: coordination & interaction

User results: coordination & interaction

Interviewees recognised that technology could be use ful in coordinating some everyday activities…⇒ e.g. picking up children, deciding who could use

the car and when, etc.

…but even unpleasant routines and related communica tion serve other purposes, not just the task at hand⇒ calendar coordination is done face-to-face or over the phone,

because it also maintains social relations between people• “We are a family, we can talk”• “One cannot just send requests, there are emotions in it”

Similarly, in the work context the social aspect of practical requests was seen as important:

• “I prefer to talk to my colleagues to get the information”

User results: efficiency is not always a goal

User results: efficiency is not always a goal

With family life at stake the objective is not alwa ys absolute efficiency, automation or any other productivity-re lated criteria:

• “Daily life events are not breaking news that you want to broadcast as soon as possible…some facts require time or the appropriate person to be communicated with…”

Playful aspects should be considered⇒ Stronger interest especially by the younger users

⇒ e.g. Interliving project shared calendar probes• “Families want to have fun together, even at a distance.

With the messageProbe, we saw tictac-toe boards, connect-the-dots games, family member caricatures, all bringing family members from different households into shared, playful activities”

Preliminary conclusions, open issues & questionsPreliminary conclusions, open issues & questions

Key user feedbacks have been used in MobiLife as general design guidelines⇒ Bring people together instead of trying to replace interaction

between people with technological processes

⇒ Extend people’s ability to interact with each other⇒ Do not disrupt the feeling of being of control;

let the people make the key decisions themselves

⇒ ....

Many comments still point to some open issues⇒ How to design and market mobile applications and

services -- and ICT solutions in general -- so that they can improve the work-life balance?

⇒ How big is the risk to exacerbate the current imbalance?
