History of the Site:
• Pirate Port burned to the ground
• Large port for immigrants, 2nd to Ellis Island
• 1900 Hurricane sea wall then built
• Hurricane Ike Hit flooding and destroying
• Beach renovation, preservation, and conservation projects in the works
Environmental Issues:
• Polluted Water Arsenic, industrial waste, and other pollutants
• Destruction of wetlands, wildlife and habitats
• Over the past 60 years, more than 45,000 acres of Galveston Bay’s wetlands have been lost. Habitat destruction greatest threat fish and wildlife
• Declining populations of species
• Intensive harvesting of seafood
Projections even faster then predicted: Climate change, rise water levels, intensity and frequency of flooding and storms not
accounted for
Economic:
Why Galveston?
Texas has some of the highest coastal erosion rates in the country
• Protects Texas, the gulf and harbor
• Rich history of the site specialties
If works here, can implement anywhere

Case: Staten Island, New YorkLiving breakwaters by Rebuild By Design
Breakwaters are rocky sloped wall with space in it.These rocky walls could dissipate destructive wave energy. Besides, different height of beds can provide habitats for different sea creatures. It is benefit for ecosystem. The rocky wall also could help to create a relatively safe recreation space for people.

Tree infiltration islands system could help purify the runoff from the city before it goes into the sea. Islands matrix could catch up sand or silt and help with sediment. Giving a certain of time, it could prevent erosion of the shoreline and expand shoreline. Trees and vegetation could be planted so that it could help to provide habitats for birds.

Sea Wall Update
Currently Straight:• Takes full impact• Floods inland to tarmac, no
drainage till it reaches town
Suggested:Update with curveAbsorbs the wave energy and repels it
“Thirsty” concrete
Vegetation before infrastructure for more drainage
Living Sea Wall for places where it is inevitable that it will go under, or flood often
Provides extra strength to the structureCreates new habitat for species

New Master Plan of Galveston
First Plan created:
1. Moving the historic more inland
1. Clusters
• Condense and increase density• Provided residential/ commercial
buildings (mix use building)• Provide green space/ buffer
between sea wall and infrastructure
