After falling 6-3 to the Prince Albert Raiders in their WHL East Division Hub opener, the Regina Pats return to action Sunday afternoon when the Saskatoon Blades play host (well, technically) to the Regiment at the Brandt Centre. Regina, who will be the away team Sunday, enters the contest after their season-opening loss to PA. While a loss is a loss, Friday night brought with it one very bright spot – Connor Bedard. The first player granted exceptional player status in WHL history made his debut a memorable one, scoring 48 seconds apart in the second period. Despite their rookie’s big performance, and plenty of other chances in a game which saw them outshoot PA almost 2-to-1 (31/17), the Pats are looking for their first entry in the win column this season. Saskatoon meanwhile dispatched of the Swift Current Broncos in both team’s season openers Saturday inside the Queen City’s Subway sponsored hub. If the Pats had their hands full in their opener with PA netminder Max Paddock, who is no stranger to strong performances at the Brandt Centre after two and a half seasons with the Regiment, Sunday will be another stiff goaltending test. Saskatoon’s Nolan Maier enters the game with 80 career wins, as he approaches the franchise record of 82 held by current Vancouver Canuck Braden Holtby. Sunday marks the first of five back-to-backs for the Blades inside the Hub, while the Pats’ first taste of tight scheduling comes in their next two games (March 16 vs. Moose Jaw and March 17 vs. Swift Current). By the NUMBERS Connor Bedard’s first two goals in the WHL came just 48 seconds apart in Friday’s 6-3 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders Bedard is the 2 nd Pat 15-year-old to score twice in his debut after Jeff Friesen pulled off the feat as call-up from the Saskatoon Contacts in December 1991 Regina’s 9 power play opportunities Friday were the most for the Pats in a season opener since 2013 when they went 1-for-9 against the Swift Current Broncos The Pats and Blades combined for 4 overtime games last season and 1 shootout game. 5 of the two team’s previous 10 meetings have gone past regulation, with Saskatoon having won 3. PATS LOOK TO EVEN RECORD WITH SUNDAY MATINEE

REGINA – Everyone back to Earth after Friday night’s second period? By the NUMBERS

• Connor Bedard’s first two goals in the WHL came just 48 seconds apart in Friday’s 6-3 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders

• Bedard is the 2nd Pat 15-year-old to score twice in his debut after Jeff Friesen pulled off the feat as call-up from the Saskatoon Contacts in December 1991

• Regina’s 9 power play opportunities Friday were the most for the Pats in a season opener since 2013 when they went 1-for-9 against the Swift Current Broncos

• The Pats and Blades combined for 4 overtime games last season and 1 shootout game. 5 of the two team’s previous 10 meetings have gone past regulation, with Saskatoon having won 3.

• Regina fell to 7-12-1-2-0 in WHL season openers at home and 22-26-2-2-1 overall in WHL home openers with Friday’s 6-3 loss to Prince Albert

• Friday’s game is the 454th regular season meeting between the Pats and Blades, and Regina’s 3,685th WHL regular season game all-time

TEAM HISTORY Founded in 1917 as the Regina Patricia Hockey Club, the Regina Pats have been a Queen City tradition for more than a century. Named for the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, the Pats are the oldest major junior hockey franchise in the world. The Pats are proud members of the Western Hockey League, having won WHL championships in 1974 and 1980. Along with these league championships, the Pats are four-time Memorial Cup champions, with victories in 1925, 1928 (as the Regina Monarchs), 1930, and 1974. The Pats storied connection with the Memorial Cup owes both to the club’s four championships, along with Regina’s proud tradition of hosting the event. The Memorial Cup has been staged — at least in part — seven times in the Queen City (shared in 1947, 1957, 1969, 1980 and solely in 1950, 2001 and 2018). The 2018 edition celebrated the centennial of both the Memorial Cup and Pats. More than 160 Pats have gone on to play in the National Hockey League, including current NHLers Sam Steel (Anaheim Ducks | Pats 2014-18), Austin Wagner (LA Kings | Pats 2013-17), and Jordan Eberle (NY Islanders | Pats 2006-10).
