PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS HOCKEYPORTLAND VS. SEATTLE | APRIL 25, 2021 | 5:00 p.m. PT | VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUM | GAME #16 of 24

LONG TIME COMING... Per Winterhawks historian Andy Kemper on his After the Whistle Blog, the latest regular season game played in Portland’s history was played on March 28, 1977 (the first season in Portland for the Hawks) at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The opponent that night was the Kamloops Chiefs (the team that would later relocate to Seattle and become the Breakers and then eventually the Thunderbirds) and it was not close…Portland thumping Kamloops by a margin of 10-2.

Since then, the Hawks have ended their regular season later than March 18 a total of 26 times (the latest being in 2016-17 when it ended on March 19), having played a total of 63 out of their 3155 regular season games after March 18. Surprisingly, 46 of those games were played in the Rose City with a record of 31-13-2-0-0. On the road, in 17 games, their record has been 6-9-1-0-1 for a combined record of 37-22-3-0-1.

CAPTAIN CICEK… Nick Cicek was honored as the franchise’s 45th captain in team history, assuming the role from Florida Panthers prospect Johnny Ludvig. The 20-year-old defenseman finished the 2019-20 campaign with career-highs in goals (4), points (14), plus/minus (+30) and penalty minutes (91). He joins quite the fraternity of Winterhawks cap-tains that include 1998 Memorial Cup Champion Brenden Morrow and recent Stanley Cup Champion Braydon Coburn. The now veteran blueliner hopes to have his best year and set an example for Portland’s eight rookies on the roster, including four on the back end.

REIGNING CHAMPIONS... Though it’s an abbreviated 24-game schedule, the Portland Winterhawks enter the 2020-21 season as reigning WHL Scotty Munro Champions after finishing the year with a 45-11-3-4 record. Last year’s team cemented themselves in history becoming the fourth fastest Winterhawks team to reach 40 wins (55 games... 50 games was the fastest ever in 1997-98 and 2012-13). The Winterhawks return their top three scorers from the championship roster, including first-round NHL Draft selection Seth Jarvis who was second in the WHL with 98 points.

LET’S GO SCOUTING... The Portland Winterhawks are proud to announce three players have been named to NHL Central Scouting’s Players to Watch List for the 2022 NHL Draft. Forward Jack O’Brien was listed as a B-rated prospect for the summer’s draft and Simon Knak and Tyson Kozak each tabbed C ratings before the start of the WHL’s season.

THE LAST GAME... Portland came out of the gates with two goals on their first two shots of the contest, taking a 2-0 lead before the game had even transpired for two minutes. Portland held on to the lead for 58:36 and beat Seattle 6-3. Seth Jarvis scored the team’s fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the night for his third career WHL hat trick. The Winterhawks responded well on special teams, killing all three penalties and going 3-for-6 on their power play chances. Eleven different Winterhawks recorded a point in the victory with Jarvis and Jaydon Dureau (three assists) paving the way offensively. Three of Dante Giannuzzi’s four wins this season have come against Seattle. He stopped 23 shots total and all ten he faced in the third period.

NOTABLES... Portland has an nine-game point streak on home ice dating back to last season... haven’t lost in regulation at home since February 23, 2020. Defenseman Kade Nolan of Rouleau, SK skates in his 100th career WHL Regular Season game tonight. The four American-born players who were loaned to the Lincoln Stars of the USHL have concluded their season and have begun the quarantine process to return to Portland to finish the season with the Winterhawks. Portland is currently third in the WHL and first in the U.S. Division in shots for per game (35.9).

BY THE NUMBERS

#12 | REECE NEWKIRKThe New York Islanders prospect has six multi-point game this season and is one of four Winterhawks averaging at a point-per-game pace or better just after the midway point of the season. In the last meeting with Seattle, he notched his 150th point in his WHL career, becoming the 79th Winterhawk to reach that plateau in Portland. Also, his three game-winning goals is tied for fourth in the WHL.

#9 | KELTIE JERI-LEONThe veteran of 242 career WHL regular season games in just two points shy of the 100 point plateau. He leads the T-Birds in scoring with ten goals on the season, including scoring the lone tally in last weekend’s head-to-head meeting with Portland. He has goals in five of his last eight games.

PORTLAND VS. SEATTLE | APRIL 25, 2021 | 5:00 p.m. PT | VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUM | GAME #16 of 24

SENSATIONAL SETH... Winterhawks forward Seth Jarvis finished second in the WHL in league scoring with 98 points (42G-56A) in 58 games and he averages more than a point-per-game in his WHL career. After his sensational season, the Carolina Hurricanes drafted Jarvis 13th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Following a stint with Hockey Canada at their World Junior training camp, Jarvis was assigned to the Hurricanes AHL affiliate Chicago Wolves and he helped lead the Wolves to an AHL-best start. Through his first nine pro games, the Winnipeg, MB native led the entire AHL as a 19-year-old with 11 points. He scored in four straight games to being his pro career and had points in six straight before getting reassigned to Portland for the abbreviated WHL season.

Jarvis, a former 11th overall WHL Bantam pick, notched his 40th goal during his first year NHL Draft eligible season, becoming just the ninth Winterhawk to do so and the first since Nic Petan. The Winnipeg native also participated in the 2020 CHL/NHL Top Prospect game in Hamilton, Ontario and was the 17th Winterhawk to participate in the event this decade, the first since Henri Jokiharju and Cody Glass attended in 2017.

GOULDY IS GOING STRONG... Brock Gould won his first three games with the Winterhawks, the first Portland goaltender to start his Winterhawks career 3-0-0-0 since Cole Kehler (4 straight) did so in 2016 and Adin Hill (3 straight) did so in 2014. The 6-foor-5, 205 pound goaltender from Colorado Springs, CO is hoping to establish some consistency after splitting his second WHL season with Victoria and Moose Jaw. Gould was also invited to play in the NHL/CHL Top Prospects Game.

KNAK FOR MORE… Second-year import Simon Knak has played the most hockey of any Winterhawk thus far this season, participating in 25 games for HC Davos of the Swiss League, potting three goals and five assists for eight points. The 19-year-old wing also touts a unique accomplishment that no one else can say either, playing games with a future Hockey Hall of Famer. During his time in Davos, Knak played alongside Toronto Maple Leafs forward “Jumbo” Joe Thornton, who was utilizing the time to stay ready for an NHL season.

In December and January, Knak laced up for his second consecutive IIHF World Junior Championship with Team Swit-zerland and was recognized as the team captain. The Zurich, SUI native was recognized as a Top Three Player for the Swiss during the tournament.

FAMILY TIES… Rookie forward Kyle Chyzowski comes from a lineage of hockey players. The Chyzowskis have been in the hockey scene for a couple of decades. His father Barry and uncles Dave and Ron Chyzowski all played for the St. Albert Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. All three would go on to have healthy hockey careers and now Kyle, the next of the second generation, is set to join cousins Nick (Kamloops, 2013 – 2018) and Ryan Chyzowski (Medicine Hat, 2016 – Pres.) in having an impact on the Western Hockey League. Both of his cousins have worn a letter in the WHL. Kyle was drafted in the 3rd round, 58th overall, by the Winterhawks in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.

Defenseman Ryan McCleary also comes from a hockey family. His father Trent won a Memorial Cup in 1989 with the Swift Current Broncos and he played in the Mem Cup again during the 1992-93 season during his final year in juniors. He went on to play 192 career NHL games with the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens and 159 games in the AHL/IHL. Ryan’s sister Maddy is also playing USports Hockey at St. Mary’s University.

SCORING SPREE... The Portland Winterhawks found their offensive touch in 2020, scoring 270 goals in 63 games (2nd best in the WHL behind Kamloops). The Winterhawks return their top three scorers from a season ago (Seth Jarvis, Jaydon Dureau and Reece Newkirk) and a healthy amount of talent from their 4th ranked power play during the 2019-20 season, operating at better than a 23% clip.

MILESTONE UPDATE... Winterhawks Head Coach, General Manager and Vice President Mike Johnston picked up his 400th career regular season win on Saturday, March 20 in Seattle as the Winterhawks beat the Thun-derbirds 4-1. The 64-year-old joined the organization in 2008-09 and has held the helm of the club for 11 of the 13 seasons since.

Jaydon Dureau hit the century mark in points on Saturday, March 20 with a power play assist in the 4-1 victory. Last season, he exploded for a career-high in goals (19), assists (51) and points (70) and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 5th round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Mason Mannek played in his 200th career WHL Regular Season game on Wednesday, April 14th against Spokane. He became the 69th Winterhawk and 13th American-born Winterhawks to reach 200 games.
