Saturday’s game will be the first meeting between the New Hampshire and Colorado football programs. It will be UNH’s first game against any Pac-12 team.

The 16 tackles by junior linebacker Quinlen Dean last week were the most by a Wildcat since Oct. 13, 2012, when Matt Evans also made 16 stops against the University of Richmond.

Senior wide receiver Neil O’Connor recorded his eighth career 100-yard receiving game with 10 catches for 111 yards against Colgate last week at Wildcat Stadium.

New Hampshire upended FBS opponent Georgia Southern, 22-12, last year at Legion Field (Birmingham, Alabama).

Prior to last year, UNH lost seven consecutive matchups against FBS op-ponents. The Wildcats won five straight games against FBS competition spanning the 2004-09 seasons.

The last time UNH started a season with back-to-back losses was 2002; the Wildcats started that year 0-4.

Prior to last week’s 10-3 loss to Colgate, the last time New Hampshire lost a regular-season home game to a non-conference team was Nov. 11, 2000, when Gardner-Webb was a 38-35 victor.

UNH had won 13 consecutive home openers prior to last week. The previous Wildcats’ loss in a home opener was to William & Mary, 9-7, on Sept. 18, 2004.

UNH has recorded seven or more wins 14 consecutive years; the stretch began in 2004 (10-3) and includes six double-digit win seasons with a program-record 12 in 2014.

Saturday’s game will be the first meeting between the New Hampshire and Colorado football programs. It will be UNH’s first game against any Pac-12 team. Other than the NCAA skiing championships, UNH and Colorado have competed against each other infrequently. In women’s soccer, UNH won the only matchup against the Buffaloes, 2-1 in overtime on the road, on Sept. 13, 2002. In women’s lacrosse, the series is even at 1-1. UNH prevailed in 2014 (14-11 in Durham) and CU won in ‘15 (10-9 in Boulder).–

AT THE POLLS: New Hampshire dropped out of both the STATS and FCS Coaches poll this week. The Wildcats had been in the national polls 18 con-secutive weeks dating back to their playoff run in the 2016 season.

UNH vs. THE FBS: New Hampshire upended FBS opponent Georgia South-ern, 22-12, last year at Legion Field (Birmingham, Alabama); the game was relocated because of Hurricane Irma. The Wildcats led 15-0 at the end of the first quarter and took a 22-0 lead into halftime. GSU trimmed the deficit to 22-12 at 6:18 of the fourth quarter but would get no closer. Neil O’Connor caught 11 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns (10 & 18 yards). Evan Gray was the top ground gainer with 13 rushes for 77 yards. The defense recorded eight tackles for loss, including five sacks, and two turnovers (Isiah Perkins INT, Brian Carter fumble recovery). The top tacklers were Rick Ellison (10), Quinlen Dean (9) and Josh Kania (9). Prior to last year, UNH lost seven consecutive matchups against FBS opponents. The Wildcats won five straight games against that competition spanning the 2004-09 seasons. The five consecutive wins were against Rutgers (35-24; 2004), North- west-ern (34-17; 2006), Marshall (48-35; 2007), Army (28-10; 2008) and Ball State (23-16; 2009). Since then, the Wildcats have been defeated by FBS teams Pittsburgh (2010), Toledo (2011 & 2014), Minnesota (2012), Central Michigan (2013), San Jose State (2015) and San Diego State (2016).

COACH MAC RECORDS 150TH CAREER WIN: Head coach Sean Mc-Donnell recorded his 150th career win when the Wildcats defeated Central Arkansas, 21-15, in the FCS second round on Dec. 2, 2017.

CAA WINS LEADERBOARD: Head coach Sean McDonnell recorded his 95th career victory in CAA conference play Nov. 11, 2017 with UNH’s 16-6 win against Elon at Wildcat Stadium. McDonnell’s predecessor, Bill Bowes, is No. 3 at 97 career conference wins.

O’CONNOR RECEIVES PRESEASON RECOGNITION: Senior wide receiver Neil O’Connor was a consensus 2018 Preseason All-American; STATS, HERO and Phil Steele all had O’Connor on the First Team. He was also named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List. Following the 2017 season, O’Connor received All-America recognition six times and was also named All-ECAC First Team, All-New England, and All-CAA First Team. O’Connor led UNH and the CAA in receptions (97), receiving yards (1,396), receiving yards/game (99.7) and receiving TDs (10); he was also atop the team leaderboard in both all-purpose yards (1,510; fifth in CAA) and points (60). On the national leaderboard, those numbers ranked No. 3 in receiving yards, 11th in receptions per game and receiving yards per game, and 14th in receiving TDs. Those numbers also ranked high on UNH’s list of single-season superla-tives – No. 2 in receptions and No. 4 in receiving yards. The previous Wildcat to reach double digits in TD catches was R.J. Harris with 15 in the 2014 season. O’Connor’s 2017 highlights included a career-high 232 receiving yards –in-cluding a career-long 76-yard TD reception – vs. Rhode Island, personal best 13 catches (182 yards) at Stony Brook and career-high three TDs (7 catches, 154 yards) vs. Bryant.

Dean’s 2017 accolades included All-CAA Second Team and HERO Sports Sophomore All-America First Team.

UNH PICKED SECOND IN CAA PRESEASON POLL: New Hampshire was voted second in the CAA Football Preseason Poll. The Wildcats received two first-place votes and 206 points to place behind three-time defending champion James Madison (241 points; 21 first-place votes). Delaware (182), Stony Brook (169) and Elon (168; 1) round out the top five.

FIVE ‘CATS AT 100: A total of five active Wildcats have 100+ career tackles; they are: junior linebacker Quinlen Dean (189), senior linebacker Jared Kuehl (146), senior defensive end Jae’Wuan Horton (135), and junior safeties Pop Lacey (136) and Rick Ellison (131). Junior cornerback Prince Smith, Jr. is on the verge of reaching the century mark with 99 career tackles.

TACKLING MACHINE: Junior linebacker Quinlen Dean led the CAA in tackles a year ago with 124, and he hasn’t shown signs of slowing down this season. Dean recorded 11 tackles in the Aug. 30 season opener at Maine and followed that with a career-high 16 tackles (8-8-16) last week against Colgate University. The 16 tackles were the most by a Wildcat since Oct. 13, 2012, when Matt Evans also made 16 stops against the University of Richmond. Dean is No. 6 in the nation in tackles per game (13.5).

BEHIND THE LINE: UNH’s defense has made 16 tackles for loss, including six sacks. Senior defensive end Jae’Wuan Horton is the leader with 4.5 TFL and 2.0 sacks. Quinlen Dean has 3.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage, including one sack. Senior defensive tackle Ryan Sosnak has three TFL with two sacks.

‘CAT DEFENSE STIFLES COLGATE: UNH’s defense allowed just 214 total yards of offense to Colgate in last week’s 10-3 loss to the Raiders at Wildcat Stadium. The Wildcat D limited the passing game to 84 yards on 8 of 18 attempt The last time UNH held an opponent below 100 passing yards was Week 2 last year vs. Georgia Southern (93 passing yards). Colgate’s 84 passing yards was the lowest by an opponent since the College of William & Mary had 61 (Oct. 1, 2016). Colgate scored the only touchdown of the game early in the second quarter by capitalizing on a turnover that gave the Raiders possession at the UNH 19 yard line. Colgate needed eight plays and 4:50 to punch it in on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Grant Breneman on fourth down. That was the only time the entire game that Colgate was in the Red Zone. Colgate converted just 2 of 15 third downs (13.3%), but was successful on all three fourth down attempts.

ECLIPSING 100 AGAIN: Senior wide receiver Neil O’Connor recorded his eighth career 100-yard receiving game with 10 catches for 111 yards against Colgate last week at Wildcat Stadium. O’Connor was, by far, UNH’s top target last week as he accounted for 10 of the team’s 14 receptions and 111 of 133 receiving yards. Through two games, O’Connor has 12 catches for 132 yards for averages of 11.0 yards per catch and 66.0 yards per game. He accounts for 12 of the team’s 22 catches and 132 of 256 yards.

FIRST CAREER START: Sophomore quarterback Christian Lupoli made his first career start last Saturday vs. Colgate. He completed 14 of 24 passes for 133 yards; he was sacked three times. Lupoli also had 10 rushes (including the three sacks) for a net of 13 yards. He entered the season opener at Maine (in place of injured starter Trevor Knight) at 6:14 of the second quarter with UNH trailing 16-0. Lupoli com-pleted his first three passes and had a five-yard rush to march the ‘Cats to the Maine 39, but a holding penalty backed UNH up and forced a punt. Lupoli finished the game 5 of 13 for 98 yards, including a 62-yard touch-down. The 13 attempts and 98 passing yards both marked career highs. He did not throw an interception and was sacked four times. Last year, Lupoli came on in relief for an injured Knight last year during

the second-round playoff game at Central Arkansas and led the Wildcats to a 21-15 win. With UNH leading 14-9, Lupoli engineered an 11-play, 63-yard TD drive to extend the advantage to 21-9 midway through the third quarter. He finished the game completing 8 of 10 passes for 63 yards, including a nine-yard TD pass, for a 165.92 passer efficiency rating. In eight games last year (five with a pass attempt), Lupoli was 13 of 28 for 95 yards, one TD and one INT; he also had 18 carries for 11 yards, including a long of 14.

ALL-PURPOSE BACK: Redshirt freshman Carlos Washington, Jr. amassed 142 all-purpose yards in his collegiate debut vs. Maine in Week 1. He led the team in rushes (eight), receptions (two), receiving yards (75) and kickoff return yards (56). He had a total of 11 rushing yards. Washington, Jr. scored his first career TD on a 62-yard pass from Christian Lupoli early in the fourth quarter. Last week against Colgate, Washington, Jr. finished with 28 all-purpose yards with five carries for 11 yards and one kickoff return for 17 yards.

GAINING GROUND: New Hampshire has been held to a total of 66 rushing yards in two games (on 69 carries). The Wildcats had 32 carries for minus-7 yards in the season opener at Maine; those totals included six sacks for minus-36 yards and a 38-yard loss on a snap that sailed over punter Drew Sanborn’s head. Evan Gray has been UNH’s top rusher both games. He finished with seven carries for 38 yards at Maine, and then had nine rushes for 29 yards vs. Colgate. That’s a total of 67 yards on 16 carries for averages of 4.2 per carry and 33.5 per game.

TURNING IT OVER: New Hampshire has lost the turnover battle each of the first two games; the Wildcats committed one turnover (fumble) at Maine and two (two fumbles) against Colgate. UNH’S defense recorded its first – and only – turnover of the season when Evan Horn intercepted Colgate quarterback Grant Breneman’s pass in the end zone late in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless.

SEEING RED: UNH’s offense did not go into the Red Zone in the opener at Maine – the Wildcats’ touchdown came on a 62-yard TD pass play– and, against Colgate, converted 1 of 2 trips inside the 20 into three points on a 30-yard field goal by Jason Hughes. Mitch McPike missed a 36-yard FG attempt vs. the Raiders.

SOLID PUNTING GAME: Drew Sanborn has solidified his spot as the team’s top punter with his performance the first two weeks of the season. On 15 punts, he has pinned the opposition inside the 20 yard line 10 times and has not kicked the ball into the end zone for a touchback. In Week 1 at Maine, Sanborn had nine punts with an average of 41.8 yards per boot; he had six punts inside the 20. Last week vs. Colgate, his six punts were an average of 37.7 yards with four inside the 20.

THE CAPTAINS: Seniors Trevon Bryant, Jae’Wuan Horton and Jared Kuehl were named the 2018 captains prior to the spring’s Blue-White scrim-mage last May. Bryant is a rare two-time captain for the Wildcats. He was a senior during spring camp in 2017 and was injured early in the session, knocking him out for the ‘17 season. Despite his injury, his teammates elected him captain for last season as camp ended. Because Bryant played as a true freshman, he was able to get a medical redshirt for last season, is eligible to play in 2018 and he was picked as a captain again.

THE PASSERS: Trevor Knight put up one of the most productive seasons ever for a UNH quarterback in 2017. He’s coming back for his senior season looking to improve on an impressive campaign. Knight, who stands 6-foot and 198 pounds, played a limited role during his redshirt freshman season and was the starter the bulk of the games his sophomore season before becoming the clear No. 1 last year. Sophomore Christian Lupoli (6-2, 187) is the other quarterback with

experience, and he came out of preseason listed as the backup on the two-deep. Lupoli came on in relief for an injured Knight last year dur-ing a second-round playoff game against Central Arkansas and led the Wildcats to a 21-15 win. This year, he has once again stepped in place of the injured Knight. The other quarterbacks are redshirt-freshmen Stephen Hedberg, a 6-3, 192-pound lefthander, and Tommy Herion (6-1, 185). Herion made his debut late in the game at Maine. With 1:59 remain-ing, he threw an incompletion on first down and then handed the ball off three times to end the game.

THE TARGETS: UNH’s quarterbacks have plenty of familiar targets, led by

seniors Neil O’Connor and Kieran Presley, as well as junior Malik Love. O’Connor had a breakout season in 2017. The consensus All-Amer-ican and Walter Payton Award finalist led UNH in receptions (97), receiving yards (1,396) and receiving TDs (10), as well as all-pur- pose yards (1,510) and points (60); he averaged 14.4 yards/ reception and 99.7 receiving yards/game. Love led the Wildcats in catches with 59 for 520 yards in 2016 and upped his numbers to 70 for 733 yards and three scores last year. Presley, who missed the first five games last year with an injury and started the final nine contests, had 43 catches for 459 yards and three scores. Sophomore Nick Lorden is one of a bunch of receivers vying for playing time. He had a knack for making key catches last year; he caught 12 passes, six of them for touchdowns. Classmate C.J. Turner played as a true freshman last season and emerged as the top kickoff returner. Sophomore Joey Carroll and red-shirt freshman Benyeal Hill, Jr. drew praise from coaches this past spring. Junior Justin Malone-Woods leads the group of tight ends. He has played in 24 games the last two years and started 11 last year with 18 catches for 275 yards and a couple of touchdowns the last two seasons. Senior John DiCaro, known more for his run-blocking skills, and sophomore Jack Cavallaro are the others in the tight end group.

THE BALL CARRIERS: Trevon Bryant, the second-year captain, gets his long-awaited shot at running back in 2018. Junior Evan Gray made the most of his opportunity last season and returns to the backfield. Those two veterans lead a four-man pack at the top of the depth chart at running back. Junior Brandon Gallagher and redshirt freshman Carlos Washington, Jr. fill out the rest of the group. As a junior in 2016, Bryant averaged six yards a carry – 82 carries for 496 yards – and scored five touchdowns. Gray rushed for 650 yards (3.6 yards a carry) and scored eight of UNH’s 12 rushing TDs last season. He also caught 20 passes for 135 yards and a score. Gallagher averaged 5.9 yards per carry and had a breakout game against Towson with 12 carries for 104 yards. Washington played on scout teams last year and had a strong spring season.

THE BLOCKERS: Senior Dayne Herron and sophomores Jack Car-roll and Matt Mascia are the guys up front with returning experience on the offensive line. Herron and Carroll worked side-by-side on the left side for a majority of the 2017 season. Herron will be a third-year starter. He started all 13 games in which he played last season – all at left tackle; he had started the last 10 games of the 2016 season at right tackle. Herron is once again penciled in at the starter at left tackle. Carroll was the starting left guard all 14 games a year ago and Mas-cia started 11 of the 12 he played in before his season was ended by injury. Noah Robison was inserted into the starting lineup at right tackle the last two games of the 2017 season, and he is starter at RT in the 2018 season. UNH had to replace the man in the middle – Jake Kennedy was an All-CAA Second Team selection at center last year. Redshirt freshman Patrick Flynn has filled that position.

THE D-LINE: Last year, UNH’s defense ranked second in the CAA in sacks, third in pass defense efficiency and first in the red zone. The defensive line’s ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks factored in that success. Seniors Jae’Wuan Horton and Kyle Reisert will help the defense turn up the heat on opposing offenses.

Horton ranked second on the team – and in the CAA – in sacks last year with 8.5. He also had a team-high four quarterback hurries and forced a couple of fumbles to tie for the lead in that category. Horton has started UNH’s last 37 games, dating back to the third game of his redshirt freshman season. Reisert led the team with 4.5 sacks in 2016, but dealt with injuries last season and was limited to six games. He is once again sidelined by injury at the outset of the 2018 season. Sophomore Brian Carter stepped up and started six games last year. He is penciled in as the starter at defensive end opposite Horton. Senior Ryan Sosnak is the main man in the middle of the defensive line. Sosnak started all 27 Wildcat games the past two seasons and he is the only defensive tackle with starting experience. He had 28 total

tackles as a sophomore in 2016 and was up to 35, with six tackles for a loss, last season. The players around him include sophomores Elijah Lewis and Ja-cob Bradshaw and freshman Niko Kvietkus.

THE LINEBACKING UNIT: Junior Quinlen Dean piled up tackles and had a breakout season last year, while Jared Kuehl turned in an-other big-play season despite missing several games because of injury. Dean and Kuehl, the senior captain, return this year to backbone what may be the strongest unit in what is shaping up as a solid UNH defense. Dean was immense last season and led the team with 124 tackles (80 unassisted, 44 assisted) and he ranked fourth in the CAA with 8.9 tackles per game. The next closest Wildcat had a total of 73 tackles. And the 124 tackles were the most by a Wildcat linebacker since 2013, when Akil Anderson had the same number. Kuehl started all 10 games in which he played in 2017; he was side-lined four games by injury. Despite missing those games, he led UNH with 13.5 tackles for loss. Kuehl also ranked third in sacks (5.0 and fourth in tackles with 66 (41-25-66), and had a team-high three fum-ble recoveries. Junior Michael Balsamo and sophomore Steven Harper are listed as the backups on the Week 3 depth chart. Balsamo, a former safety, had 31 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, last year.

SAFETIES: Juniors Rick Ellison and Pop Lacey have been regular starters in their first two seasons and sophomore Evan Horn started the second half of last season. Ellison was third on the team in tackles last season with 43 unas-sisted and 26 assisted for a total of 69. He returned one of his two interceptions 50 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring in a win over Bryant. Lacey had an outstanding season as a true freshman and started 11 of the team’s 13 games. He led the Wildcats in tackles (63-19-82) and had a couple of interceptions and a fumble recovery. Last season, in-juries limited him to nine games with seven starts; he finished with 42 tackles (29-13). Horn was second on the team in interceptions with three last fall and had 43 tackles (23-20). Horn switched to basketball after the foot-ball season ended and played in 14 games with two starts. Juniors Matt Sherlock and Dean Adams, as well as redshirt fresh-man Pop Bush, have seen regular playing time this season.

ANTI-AIR DEFENSE: They are the Big 3 of the cornerback position: juniors Isiah Perkins and Prince Smith, Jr., and sophomore Alonzo Addae. Perkins and Smith, Jr. have been mainstays in the defensive backfield for the Wildcats the last couple of seasons, and Addae joined them last year and had more-and-more of an impact as the season pro-gressed. All three were often on the field together in passing situations. Smith, Jr. played as a true freshman in 2016, started 10 games and led the Wildcats with five interceptions – and the CAA with 18 passes defended – en route to being named the conference’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. Last year in 10 starts, he led UNH cornerbacks in tackles with 37 unassisted and 18 assisted for a total of 55. Perkins had five picks last season, including two in the fourth quarter against Rhode Island to help the Wildcats protect a 28-14 win. Addae had 24 assisted and 12 unassisted tackles last season for a total of 36. He forced a fumble each of UNH’s two playoff wins last season and recovered the fumble he caused against Central Arkansas.

KICKING THE BALL AROUND: The Wildcats look to revamp their kicking game for 2018. Max Pedinoff did the bulk of the punting and

Morgan Ellman most of the kicking over the last couple of seasons. Both have graduated. Junior Drew Sanborn had a productive spring ‘18 season and grabbed the punting job. Sanborn punted eight times in 2017 with a 34.6 per kick average and nine punts in 2016 averaged 38.4 yards per boot. Sophomore Jason Hughes rose to the top as the placekicker and Mitch McPike will now be handling kickoff duties.

BACK TO RETURN: Junior Brandon Gallagher lined up deep on kick-off returns for a majority of the ‘17 season. He had 10 returns for 192 yards, including a team long of 35. In the second round and quarterfinal games of the NCAA playoffs, Gallagher averaged 23.2 yards on seven returns. This year, however, running backs Trevon Bryant and Carlos Wash-ington, Jr. have been lining up deep on kickoff returns. Washington, Jr. is averaging 18.2 yards per return (4-73) and Bryant is at 18.0 (2-36). Evan Horn was the only Wildcat with a punt return a year ago. He finished with 21 returns for 76 yards, including a long of 17. Pop Lacey began the 2018 season as the punt returner, but Horn is back there again.

WILDCAT STADIUM – A NEW ERA OF UNH FOOTBALL: Wildcat Stadium saw a 13 percent increase from its inaugural season of UNH foot-ball, highlighted by the all-time largest crowd for a home opener (15,854) and largest on-campus crowd (22,135) in school history in the 2017 season. The Wildcats averaged 12,751 fans per home game in the 2017 regular season, up from 11,108 in the 2016 regular season. The overall attendance of 63,756 eclipsed that of 55,542 in ‘16. A new era of UNH football began Saturday, Sept. 10 2016, when New Hampshire played its inaugural game at Wildcat Stadium against College of the Holy Cross – and prevailed 39-28 in front of 13,242 spectators. Sean McDonnell ’78 enters his 20th season as head coach of his alma mater in 2018. The native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., has a career record of 150-90 (.625 winning percent-age) that includes a 95-61 conference mark (.609). He has guided the Wildcats to 14 con-secutive winning seasons – with six double-digit win totals – and the ‘Cats have advanced to the NCAA Division I FCS tournament each of those 14 years, which is the longest active streak in the nation. McDonnell’s collegiate accolades include Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year (2005, 2014), AFCA National Coach of the Year (2014), AFCA District Coach of the Year (2004-05-12-14), CAA Coach of the Year (‘04 & ‘14), New England Football Writers Coach of the Year (2005-08-10-12-14) and Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Head Coach of the Year (2000-04-09-12). UNH extended its nation-leading active streak of consecutive playoff appearances to 14 years in the 2017 season. After recording their first shutout in postseason history with a 14-0 win against Central Connecticut State University in the first round, the Wildcats traveled to third-ranked Central Arkansas and prevailed 21-15 to advance out of the sec-ond round. The ‘Cats traveled even farther west to play fifth-ranked South Dakota State in the quarterfinals, and New Hampshire’s season came to an end with a 9-5 record. The 2017 season began with a 24-23 victory against Maine in the inaugural Thursday Night Throwdown to keep the Brice-Cowell Musket in Durham for the seventh consecu-tive year. The Wildcats improved to 2-0 by defeating FBS school Georgia Southern at the historic Iron Bowl (Birmingham, Ala.), and the ‘Cats recorded another signature victory with a 16-6 win against top-10 team Elon in mid-November. UNH football christened Wildcat Stadium against Holy Cross on Sept. 10, 2016 and fireworks lit up the Durham sky following a 39-28 victory. New Hampshire went 6-2 the last eight games of the regular season with victories against William & Mary and Stony Brook, both of whom were nationally ranked. UNH went on to defeat Lehigh, 64-21, in an NCAA first round game and ended the year with an 8-5 overall record that included 6-2 in the CAA. The 2015 Wildcats rallied to win their final four games to extend their playoff streak to 12 years. The winning streak included an upset of No. 5 Richmond (30-25) and a con-vincing 22-6 defeat of rival Maine in the final regular-season home game in the 79-year history of Cowell Stadium. The ‘Cats recorded victories in their final 15 regular season games in Cowell Stadium. UNH put together a staggering streak of 162 straight weeks ranked in the STATS FCS Top 25, a streak that spanned Sept. 6, 2004 through Oct. 12, 2015. Coach Mac guided the 2014 Wildcats to their second consecutive national semifinal appearance with a 12-2 record that included school records for most wins in a season and consecutive wins (12), as well as five wins against nationally-ranked teams, including four in the Top 10. The Wildcats posted a perfect 8-0 record in the CAA to claim their third league championship under McDonnell (2005-12-14) and first outright title since 1994. In 2013, McDonnell was honored by the Joe Yukica-New Hampshire Chapter of the National Football Foundation with the Andy Mooradian Award for his contributions to amateur football. UNH won multiple playoff games (three) in a single season for the first time in program history en route to the Wildcats’ first appearance in the FCS semifinals. The ‘Cats recorded five wins against nationally-ranked foes, including three vs. the Top 10, to finish with a 10-5 overall record as well as a 6-2 CAA mark. New Hampshire recorded a six-game win streak for the second consecutive season and went a perfect 6-0 at home. After a 1-3 start, the 2013 season turned when Coach Mac’s Wildcats went for – and converted – a 2-point PAT with 14 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to defeat 12th-ranked Villanova, 29-28. UNH closed the regular season with a convincing 24-3 win at Cowell Stadium against fourth-ranked Maine to retain the Brice-Cowell Musket before recording playoff wins against Lafayette (45-7 at home), eighth-ranked Maine (41-27) and seventh-ranked Southeastern Louisiana (20-17). The 2012 Wildcats earned a share of the CAA championship with a 6-2 league mark. The ‘Cats compiled an 8-4 overall record that included an NCAA second-round game at Wofford. McDonnell reached coaching milestone victory No. 100 with a 44-21 win against Georgia State at the Georgia Dome on Oct. 6, 2012. The 2011 Wildcats matched a school record for the second straight year by knocking off five ranked opponents en route to an 8-4 mark, including 6-2 in the CAA. The ‘Cats put a bow on their rivalry with Massachusetts by knocking off the Minutemen, 27-21, in the second Colonial Clash at Gillette Stadium. UNH reclaimed the Brice-Cowell Musket with a 30-27 defeat of Maine in the regular-season finale and came within a blocked PAT of forcing overtime in a playoff loss at Montana State. Junior linebacker Matt Evans became the first Wildcat

HEAD COACH SEAN McDONNELLto ever be named the nation’s top defensive player when he won the Buck Buchanan Award, and senior quarterback Kevin Decker was crowned the CAA Offensive Player of the Year. In 2010, McDonnell’s Wildcats collected victories against five ranked opponents en route to an 8-5 campaign. UNH advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA postseason for the sixth time in seven years after dispatching Bethune-Cookman, 45-20, in the second round. UNH made history by topping No. 12 UMass, 39-13, in the inaugural Colonial Clash at Gillette Stadium. The game was witnessed by 32,848 fans, the largest football crowd in CAA history. UNH finished 10-3 in 2009 and won its second straight CAA North Division championship. The Wildcats continued to be giant killers by knocking off an FBS opponent for the fifth straight time, securing a hard-fought 23-16 triumph at Ball State. Previous FBS opponents to feel the wrath of the Wildcats during the amazing upset run were Army (2008), Marshall (’07), Northwestern (’06) and Rutgers (’04). UNH was the only team to defeat eventual FCS national champion Villanova (28-24) on Homecoming. The Wildcats also posted an im-pressive win on the road at McNeese State, defeating the Cowboys, 49-13, in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. New Hampshire notched a 10-3 record in 2008, including a defeat of Southern Illinois in the first round of the NCAAs. UNH finished the season ranked No. 7 in most national polls. In 2007, the Wildcats were 7-5 overall and just narrowly missed upsetting No. 1 Northern Iowa in the first round of the NCAAs, losing on a last-minute TD, 38-35, at the UNI Dome. The Wildcats were ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation in 2006 and finished the season ranked sixth after defeating Hampton in the first round (41-38) of the NCAAs. Among the regular-season highlights was senior All-America wide receiver David Ball surpassing legendary Jerry Rice with 58 career TD receptions and junior quarterback Ricky Santos claiming the Walter Payton Award as the FCS football national player of the year. In 2005, McDonnell was honored as the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year by The Sports Network after leading his Wildcats to a record-breaking 11-2 season, an Atlantic 10 Championship, a second straight NCAA appearance in the I-AA quarterfinals and the country’s No. 1 ranking at the end of the regular season. The Wildcats played host to two nationally-televised NCAA postseason games on ESPN at Cowell Stadium. McDonnell’s hard work rebuilding the program paid off in 2004 with a 10-3 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Atlantic 10, which earned the team the Northern Division championship and a bid to the NCAA I-AA Championships for the first time since 1994. The ‘Cats advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in the history of the program by winning its first-ever NCAA contest under McDonnell, a 27-23 upset at Georgia Southern. In 2003, UNH began turning the corner by winning three of its last four contests, including an upset victory over nationally-ranked Maine. In 2002, McDonnell’s offense was one of the most prolific in I-AA football and averaged 449.2 yards per contest and 36.7 ppg. UNH finished with a 4-7 overall record in 2001. In 2000, the Wildcats were ranked as high as 23rd in the nation and knocked off three top-25 opponents. Injuries squashed UNH’s chances for a playoff berth down the stretch. In his rookie season, McDonnell led the Wildcats to a 5-6 overall record and oversaw a wide-open offensive attack that led the Atlantic 10 with an average of 457.3 yards per game. McDonnell was named the 19th head coach of the UNH football program April 22, 1999. McDonnell replaced legendary head coach Bill Bowes, who retired after 27 years as the mentor of the Wildcats. McDonnell served eight seasons as a Wildcat assistant and completed his fifth year as the team’s offensive coordinator in 1998. McDon-nell rejoined the Wildcats as an assistant coach before the 1991 spring camp and worked with the quarterbacks and receivers for his first three seasons. In 1997, McDonnell was named the recipient of “The College Assistant Coach Award” by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in recognition of his quality of performance, loyalty and longevity. McDonnell was a standout defensive back for UNH. He started for the 1975 and 1976 Yankee Conference championship teams and came back to start for the 1978 squad. After his graduation from UNH, he spent one year as an assistant coach at Manchester (N.H.) Memorial High School and followed that up with a three-year stint at Manchester West (1980-82). McDonnell worked as the defensive coordinator at Hamilton College for two seasons (1983-84) and subsequently spent three years (1985-87) coaching the receivers and tight ends at former conference-rival Boston University. During the 1988 campaign, McDonnell served as a graduate assistant coach at Boston College. He spent two seasons as an assistant at Columbia (1989-90) prior to his coaching debut in Durham.

Last season, he oversaw a UNH defense that ranked No. 1 in the CAA in red zone as well as second in sacks and third in pass defense efficiency. In the 2016 CAA rankings, the Wildcats’ defense was second in the red zone as well as fumble recoveries and interceptions, tied for second in sacks, third in takeaways and fourth in rushing defense. Under Lyons’ tutelage, senior cornerback Casey DeAndrade was named to a total of five All-America teams. Also of note, Prince Smith, Jr. was honored as the CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year. Lyons, the second-winningest head football coach in Dartmouth College history, was inducted into the Northwest Catholic (Conn.) High School Hall of Fame on April 27, 2013. In 2015, Lyons oversaw an opportunistic de-fensive unit that recovered 11 fumbles and tallied 12 interceptions to help the ‘Cats to a +6 turnover margin (No. 3 in CAA). DeAndrade tied for second in the league in passes defended. The stout defense racked up 31 sacks (No. 3 in CAA) and boasted the league’s third-ranked red zone defense. In the 2014 national statistics, UNH ranked 22nd in scoring defense, 15th in sacks and 17th in turnovers gained, which included 15th in fumbles recovered. In the CAA, the Wildcats were No. 2 in scoring defense and No. 3 in passing efficiency defense. UNH’s secondary was led by All-America honoree Casey DeAndrade, a sophomore who was one of six ‘Cats to receive All-Conference recognition. In 2011, LB Matt Evans won the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation’s top defensive player – the first Wildcat to ever accomplish that feat. As head coach at Dartmouth (1992-2004), Lyons earned 60 career wins and two Ivy League titles (‘92, ‘96). He was named the 1996 Division I N.E. Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Boston. Lyons worked at Kimball Union Academy as football coach (2005-10) and A.D. (2008-10). He spent three years (2005-07) in NFL Europe with the Cologne Centurions. He served as defensive coordinator at Boston U. (1985-87) and at his alma mater, Penn (‘84). He played three years for the Quakers and was an All-Ivy League Second Team selection.

JOHN BOWES SAFETIESJohn Bowes joined the UNH coaching staff in 2018 as safeties coach. Bowes spent the 2017 season as the defensive coordinator/safeties coach at Fordham University; the defense ranked third in the Patriot League in turnover margin and had three play-ers earn All-Patriot League honors. Bowes spent his previous three years (2013-16) at Bucknell as the secondary coach/special teams coordinator. In 2016, Bowes coached a pair of first team All-Patriot League defensive backs. In 2015, he coached the Pa-triot League Defensive Player of the Year and a Third-Team All-American. Prior to Bucknell, Bowes spent five years (2008-13) as an assistant coach at William & Mary. A 2006 graduate of The Catholic University of America with a degree in finance, he was a three-year starter at cornerback and safety. Bowes got his start in coaching at his alma mater in 2006. He then spent a year as a graduate assistant at Clarion University.

GARRETT GILLICK LINEBACKERSGarrett Gillick is in his fifth year as the linebackers coach at UNH in 2018. Last year, sophomore linebacker Quinlen Dean recorded a team- and CAA-high 124 tackles to earn a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. In 2016, his proteges ranked 3-4-5 on the team in tackles and those three combined for 23 of the team’s 76 tackles for loss. Senior DeVaughn Chollette earned a spot on the All-CAA Football Third Team. In 2015, Gillick’s understudy Akil Anderson earned All-CAA Third Team and Wildcat team defensive MVP. Under Gillick’s tutelage in the 2014 season, both Anderson and Shane McNeely earned CAA All-Conference honors as they ranked 1-2 on the team in tackles. The linebacking corps helped UNH rank second in the CAA in scoring defense (21.2 points/game). Prior to coming to Durham, Gillick had a three-season stint (2011-13) at Bentley University, including two years as defensive line coach and one year (2013) as secondary coach.

PETER McCARTY DEFENSIVE LINEPeter McCarty, who has been coaching for over 30 years, is in his fifth season as de-fensive line coach in 2018. Last year, the duo of senior DT Rick Holt and junior DE Jae’Wuan Horton combined for 17.5 sacks to help UNH rank second in the CAA in that stat for the second straight year (with 35 sacks). Holt led the team and tied for first in the league in sacks, and was second on the team in total tackles en route to garnering CAA All-Conference Second Team recognition. Horton ranked second in both tackles for loss (13) and sacks (8.5). In 2016, on the strength of the pass rush generated by the D-line, UNH tied for second in the CAA with 24 sacks. Senior DE Cam Shorey earned a spot on the All-CAA Football First Team. The young D-line rotation included three sophomores and a redshirt freshman. The 2015 Wildcats’ de-fense ranked third in the CAA with 31 sacks. In 2014, McCarty helped guide the UNH defense to a CAA-best 39 sacks. Led by All-CAA Second Team selection Cody Muller and All-CAA Third Team Matt Kaplan, the defense ranked second in the CAA and 22nd nationally in scoring defense (21.2 points/game). McCarty’s extensive coaching experience at the college level includes stops at Stanford, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Il-linois, Syracuse, Cornell, Western Michigan, Central Florida and Holy Cross.

Ellis brings a wealth of knowledge as a former professional football player prior to becoming a coach in 2013. The native of Hampton, Va. was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the third round of the 2008 NFL draft following a standout career at Virginia Tech. Ellis was a three-time All-ACC honoree as a defensive lineman for the Hokies and went on to play parts of four seasons in the NFL with the Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers. His professional career ended in 2012 with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughrid-ers. Ellis began his coaching career at Frostburg State (Frostburg, Md.) in ‘13 and he worked with the defensive line and special teams at Christopher Newport University (Newport News, Va.) for three years prior to coming to UNH. Ellis earned a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Tech in Dec. 2007.

MICHAEL FERZOCO WIDE RECEIVERS/PASS GAME COORDINATORMichael Ferzoco is in his 11th season on the UNH coaching staff in 2018, and third season working with the wide receivers. He was elevated to the role of WR coach/pass game coordinator this season. Ferzoco spent six seasons (2010-15) as the running backs coach after serving as linebackers coach his first two seasons (2008-09). Under the tutelage of Ferzoco, Neil O’Connor was named to six All-America teams, All-New England, All-ECAC and All-CAA in 2017; on the national leaderboard, he was No. 3 in receiving yards, 11th in receptions/game and receivng yards/game, and 14th in receiving TDs. In 2014, the Wildcats’ running game finished top three in the CAA in rushing offense for the third straight year. Senior Nico Steriti, who gained All-CAA honors for the third straight year, ranked first in the CAA with 14 rushing TDs. In 2013, the Wildcats featured a running game led by Steriti, who garnered All-CAA Second Team for the second con-secutive year and became the first UNH back since 2002 to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards.

ALEX MILLER OFFENSIVE LINE/ RUN GAME COORDINATORIn 2018, Alex Miller is in his eighth season as an assistant coach at UNH and seventh year in charge of the entire offensive line. He added the responsibility of run game coordinator in 2016, which puts him in command of game-planning all running plays. Last year, Jake Kennedy centered the offensive line and was named to the All-CAA Second Team. Miller’s O-line and run game scheme paved the way for senior running back Dalton Crossan, who had a year for the record books with 233 carries for 1,281 yards in ‘16; those numbers rank No. 10 and No. 6 on the respective single-season list of UNH superlatives. Senior center Tad McNeely was named to the All-CAA Football First Team and classmate Andrew Lauderdale was a Third Team selection. The 2016 Wildcats averaged 379.2 yards and 28.5 points per game, both of which ranked third in the CAA.
