HUDSONVILLE — The tough schedule keeps getting tougher for the Zeeland East football team. Hudsonville shut out Zeeland East 40-0 on Friday. Hudsonville (3-0) running back Kyle Toth rushed for 114 yards, and quarterback Mason Opple passed for 102 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The Chix dropped to 0-3. Zeeland East's quarterback Dan Pohanka passed for 70 yards. The Eagles’ first score came with 7:02 remaining in the first quarter on a 3-yard run by Toth on his fourth carry in a row in the drive. The second came a few minutes later with 4:11 remaining in the quarter on a 14-yard pass from Opple to tight end Jack Ellermets. Toth would score the next two touchdowns, the first with 1:13 left in the first quarter on an 11-yard carry. He scored the next one on a 55-yard carry with 8:55 remaining in the half. Opple scored the next two touchdowns, the first coming on a 10-yard carry with 3:14 left in the half on a QB keeper. The second came on a 27-yard pass to wide receiver Kaden Kempker on fourth and 11 with 4:52 remaining in the third quarter to make it 40-0. Zeeland East coach Derek Pennington was frustrated with the loss. “We didn’t execute. We didn’t make a play that we had to make. We killed a lot of drives with penalties and errors. (We) just didn’t play well,” Pennington said. The Chix were unable to make it into Hudsonville territory the entire first quarter. In the second quarter they were able to move deeper, but turned it over on downs or were forced to punt. Penalties were also a factor, as the Chix were called for four false starts in the game. Despite the loss, wide receiver Devin Butler, who earned All-Conference Honorable Mention in the OK Black last year, was able to focus on the positive. “Tonight, we didn’t do a lot well, but I feel like we’re slowly improving as a team. We just have a lot to improve,” Butler said.
