ELMA ROANE FIELDHOUSEAn intimidating arena for opponents of the

University of Memphis volleyball and women’s bas-ketball teams, the Elma Roane Fieldhouse serves asthehomefortheTigersintheheartoftheUniversityofMemphiscampus.Thearena isoftenpackedwithTigers fansandgets loud,providingMemphiswithagreat homecourt advantagewhere the Tigers hold a371-172recordsince1977-78.

The Fieldhouse is named after former women’sathleticdirectorElmaNealRoane.Apioneerforwom-en’sathleticsatMemphisandintheMid-South,Roaneattendedgamesuntilherpassingin2011.

Havingfinishedthesecondphaseofarenovationplanthatbeganin2011,theFieldhousenowprovidesstate-of-the-art athletic training and strength andconditioning facilities. The first phase of renovationsincluded improvements to the locker roomareas forboth volleyball and women’s basketball, a new stu-dent-athletelounge,anewdoctor’sexaminationareaanda coaches’meeting roomand locker area.HeadcoachMelissaMcFerrinplayedakeyroleinthe$4mil-lionrenovationprojectthatwascompletedin2013.

One part of the second renovation phase wasconvertingwhatusedtoberacquetballcourts in theElmaRoaneFieldhouseintoastrengthandcondition-ingarea.ThelowerlevelisnowhometofivePowerLiftPowerRacks,legextensionandlegcurlmachinesandan assortment of new Iron Grip dumbbells, rangingfromfiveto80pounds.ThestrengthandconditioningequipmentcametotheTigerscourtesyofagiftfromtheHelenandJabieHardinCharitableTrust.

Abovetheweightareaaretwonewcardiofitnessplatforms. One platform houses six new Woodway4Front Treadmills, while another consists of a four-lane,indoortracktoworkonsprints.

Adjacenttothestrengthandconditioningareaisanathletictrainingfacility.TheTigerscangetpreppedforgamesontheProteambyHausmannTapingStationandcanreceivetreatmentonanyofthefiveProteamtraining tables, one of which — a Hausmann high/low table— can also serve as amassage table. TheTigers also have a new Chattanooga Vectra GenisysElectrotherapySystemtoaidintreatments.

Recoveriesfrominjuriesalsowillbeaidedbytheaddition of a HydroWorx PolarPlunge pool, whichkeeps water at a 55-degree temperature to controljoint inflammation and enhance muscle recovery.Previously,theTigershadtostaggericebathsamongthreestainlesssteeltubs,butthePolarPlungepoolwillenablemorestudent-athletestoget intotheirrecov-eryplansquickerafterworkoutsandgames.

A second HydroWorx pool added to the athletictrainingareaisanaquatictherapypool,whichhasanunderwatertreadmill.Theaquatictherapypoolassistsstudent-athletesinalow-impactexerciseenvironmentthat increases rangeofmotionand improvesmusclestrength with strategically-placed, high-powered wa-terjetswhichcanbeusedforresistancetraininganddeep-tissuemassage.Previously,TigersneedingtouseanunderwatertreadmillhadtoutilizetheoneattheMurphyAthleticComplexontheParkAvenuecampus
