LAST GAME: Pitchers CONNOR SADZECK and JAMES DYKSTRA combined for a four-hit shutout of the Drillers in a 3-0 win Tuesday night at ONEOK Field...Sadzeck worked the first 5 2/3 innings before giving way to Dykstra, who retired all 10 men he faced...DREW VETTLESON drove in two of the three Riders runs, including a solo homer in the top of the second and an RBI infield single in the eighth. STARTING TO START BETTER: Riders starting pitchers got off to a rough start in the season’s first four games, but have bounced back well since. Six of the last seven starts have lasted at least five innings and five have featured two or fewer runs allowed. The recent turnaround has helped lower the starter’s ERA from 13.17 to 5.90. DYKSTRA DOMINATING: Reliever JAMES DYKSTRA has been nearly unhittable so far in 2017. The righty retired all 10 men he faced Tuesday and has set down 26 of 28 he’s battled this season, striking out nine. Dykstra, who was traded from the White Sox in December, is one of three Riders relievers who still has yet to allow an earned run this season, joining DAVID LEDBETTER and SHANE McCAIN. BOOM OR BUST IN THE SEASON SERIES: Through five meetings in 2017, the Riders and Drilers have either found them- selves in an offensive slugest or a tight pitcher’s duel. In the two games started by Frisco’s CONNOR SADZECK and Tulsa’s SCOTT BARLOW, the two teams have combined for eight runs on 19 hits and one home run. Meanwhile, in the other three meetings (4/9, 4/10 and 4/17), Frisco and Tulsa have accumulated 34 runs on 69 hits with 10 long balls. A KNACK FOR CONTACT: Early on, ISIAH KINER-FALEFA and JUREMI PROFAR have proven extremely difficult to strike out. Kiner-Falefa is second in the league with a rate of one strikeout every 12.67 plate appearances, while Profar is third with a rate of one strikeout every 11.50 PAs. Kiner-Falefa led the Texas league last year, striking out once every 8.96 trips to the plate, while Profar was third in the California League with a mark of one punchout per 9.04 visits to the batter’s box. HEINEMAN HEATS UP: Outfielder SCOTT HEINEMAN has enjoyed a fruitful road trip, hitting 8-20 (.400) in the first five games of the swing through Springfield and Tulsa. He was especially productive in Springfield, going 5-10 with a home run, an RBI, four walks, two stolen bases and six runs scored. Heineman has a 10-game hitting streak to open the season and leads the team in average (.341), on-base percentage (.438), runs (10), walks (6) and stolen bases (4). RIDERS ON THE RUN: The Riders stole a season-high four bases Monday in Tulsa and snagged another bag Tuesday, putting them atop the league leaderboard with 14 stolen bases (17 attempts). SCOTT HEINEMAN leads the club with a 4-4 mark and is one of three players with two stolen bases in a game this season (DREW VETTLESON, ANDY IBANEZ). It’s a stark contrast from last season when the Riders finished sixth in the league with 79 swiped bags. OPPONENTS GETTING HOMER HAPPY: The Drillers blasted three home runs Monday, the most allowed by the Riders in a game this season. It brings the season total up to 14 long balls in 11 games, the most allowed in the Texas League. Riders pitchers have recorded just three homerless games in the first 10 contests this season (4/6 vs. SPR, 4/11 vs. TUL, 4/18 at TUL). CAST AWAY: Monday, Riders pitchers allowed baserunners in all 10 innings but held Tulsa to a 1-10 mark with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 Drillers. It fits the early trend shown by Riders pitchers, who haven’t necessarily excelled at keeping opponents off the bases (.349 opponent OBP) but have shown a knack for stranding runners and getting out of jams. On the year, Riders pitching has held opponents to a .206 average (20-97) with runners in scoring position and strand- ed 92 runners in 11 games. Over the last seven games, the numbers favor the Riders even more, with opponents hitting just .127 (7-55) with RISP and leaving 57 men on base. POWERED BY PROSPECTS: With the standouts from last year’s High Desert squad trickling in to Frisco and a few key return- ers from last season, the 2017 RoughRiders Opening Day roster featured eight players ranked on MLB.com’s list of top 30 Rangers prospects: YOHANDER MENDEZ (No. 2), ARIEL JURADO (3), JOSE TREVINO (7), CONNOR SADZECK (11), ANDY IBANEZ (12), MICHAEL DE LEON (19), SCOTT HEINEMAN (24) and JUREMI PROFAR (27). game #12 wednesday, april 19, 2017 12:05 P.m.
