Tuckahoe Brewing Company andCapeMayBrewingCompanyhavemuchin common. They both launched lessthan a year ago. They both settled inCape May County. They both made in-roads in local pubs and restaurants.

And theybothmake their debut at theseventh annual The Celebration of theSuds, Atlantic City Beer and Music Fes-tival, each offering four brews. The twojoin some 80 breweries from across thecountry that will showcase their craftbeers March 30 and 31 at the AtlanticCity Convention Center.

The festival allows beer aficionados, beer lovers and casual beer drinkers tospeak to company representatives andbrewers, in addition to offering a venuefor discovering new craft beers.

Tuckahoe, based in Dennis Township, opened in December. The brewery’sbrain trust includes architect Jim McA-fee and three teachers from Mainland

High School in Linwood: Chris Konicki,Tim Hanna andMatt McDevitt.

The beer fest is one of the largest inthe country, Hanna said. “For a start-upbrewery, this provides a great opportu-nity for us to get recognition.”

In addition to a pale ale and a porter,Tuckahoe will serve a coffee stout, brewed with coffee beans, and a wit, astyle of Belgian beer that’s white in col-or.

Likemany craft breweries, Tuckahoebegan as home brews produced by itsfounders. But itwas at a partymore thana decade ago that the idea of a commer-cial enterprise took root, Hanna said.

“Everyonehad to represent acountryand bring beer from that country. Therewas a wide array of beers. That got usthinking that this is something people doeverywhere. Soweput together aplan todo this commercially,” he said.

CapeMay Brewing Company openedlast summer, a partnership among RyanKrill, his father, Bob, and college friend,

Chris Henke. “Chris and I were homebrewers, and we loved the idea of start-ing a brewery. It’s a romantic idea, sowewent for it.”

The brewery is located by the CapeMay County Airport, in an area sur-rounded by fivewineries, Krill said. Thefestivalprovidesabigstageforacompa-ny thathopes toexpand throughoutCapeMay and Atlantic counties.

“This is the closest beer festival on anational scale. It’s a really big deal andit’s in our backyard,” he said.

A tasting roomat the brewery is openon Saturdays.

“It’s amadhouse for us. It’s becomingincreasingly popular,” Krill said.

Among the four brews expected atthe festival,CapeMayIPA is theone thatmade the brewery famous, Krill said.“It’s a balanced beer approachable forpeople not used to drinking IPA.”

The festival goes beyond breweriesthis year with culinary demonstrationsand nationally known bands.

In terms of scale, the opening of a park-ing garage last week pales against thepending opening of Revel’s $2.4 billion re-sort on April 2.

But the $30 million spent by the CasinoReinvestment Development Authority ona five-story parking garage is nothing tolaugh at. The garage, on Fairmount Ave-nue between Christopher Columbus Bou-levard and Mississippi Avenue, features1,677 solar panels on the roof and sixcharging stations for electric vehicles.

And the garage, dubbedTheWave, pro-vides1,180parkingspacesonsix levels inamidtown area that depended primarily onthe Caesars-Bally’s parking garage be-tween Atlantic and Pacific avenues.

The additional spaceswill serve the ex-panding Tanger Outlets The Walk, Board-walk Hall shows, events at the AtlanticCity Convention Center and theDucktownneighborhood, hometoDanteHallTheaterof the Arts, a number of restaurants andthe centerpiece of the proposed arts andentertainment district.

The new garage will be managed andoperated by Standard Parking. The Wavewill have an attendant on duty 24-7. A part-nership with South Jersey TransportationAuthority allows for the acceptance of theE-Z Pass Plus in the new garage.

Themuch-anticipatedRevel resort willbe the first new casino hotel sinceBorgataopenednineyearsago, andthefirst toopenon the boardwalk since the Trump TajMa-hal in 1990.

A lot is riding on this $2.4 billionprojectexpected to employ 5,000 people. Here aresome details:

IMPACT ONMARKET

Revel expects to cater to four segmentsof the tourismmarket:groupmeetings, lei-sure travelers, day visitors and overnightgaming visitors, better known as the highrollers.

Ah, but the question becomes, how willRevel impact Atlantic City overall? Will ittake customers from everyone else ordraw newcomers to the city?

“I believe the group and leisure seg-ments will attract significant new busi-ness. When I think about day visitors, therewill be the increasedcuriosity factorthroughout the summer. We’ll get somenew business there. We expect little im-pact on the rest of the city from our over-night customer, however,” said Kevin De-Sanctis, the CEO of Revel Entertainment.

DeSanctis expects almost every visitorcoming to Atlantic City to stop by at leastonce, just to see what the fuss is all about.

While Revel will dazzle as the expen-sivenewcomer in town,DeSanctis sees theresort as only part of the city’s landscape

“We’reaverygood tool in the toolboxofthe city,” he said. “Based upon what I amseeing, it should be a very good summerfor the city. There will be no lack of thingsfor people to do.”

RETAIL

None of the retail elements will beready for the resort’s soft launch on April2.When it comes to retail, the idea is to cre-ate a fun experience, not just a place toshop. Revel will break down its retailspace intoseven“livingrooms,”DeSanctissaid. The concepts of each vary. For exam-ple, one will feature technology, anotherlifestyle.

Every living roomwill offer some typeof food and beverage, such as cappuccino.“Eacharea isdesignedtobeaplace tohangout,” DeSanctis said.

The plan is to offer selections visitorscan’t get back home. But the products willalso letguestspickupabathingsuit for theswimmingpools, ormaybe an evening out-fit.

And the prices? “We do not want peopleto take out a home equity loan to shophere,” DeSanctis said.

DINING

By the time Revel kicks into high gearlater this year, the resort will feature 14restaurants .Unlikemost of the other casi-nos in town, Revel will not operate any ofits dining spots. Instead, theywill all be op-erated by outside restaurateurs.

“We’re not particularly good at food,”DeSanctis said.

The hotel will include a fast-food com-

ponent amid the host of gourmet chefnames, butonewithqualityatagreatpricepoint, he said.

Another difference: Revel will not fea-ture a buffet.

“Nooneever cameupwith abuffet con-cept we were thrilled with,” DeSanctissaid.

THE BEACH

The hotel plans to integrate the beachand ocean into the guest experience.

“At the end of the day, that is really thegoal,” DeSanctis said.

When guests arrive, they get a glimpse

of the ocean as they drive up. In addition, the design of the building, with its reflec-tive glass all around, mirrors its surround-ings. The ocean, beach and clouds are vis-ible in the reflections.

The placement of pools and the decksalso speak to that integration of oceanviews. Many of the restaurants allow din-ers to see the ocean from their table. Andall guest rooms offer an ocean view.

While there won’t be any beach bars onthe ocean side of the boardwalk, there willbe the equivalent on the hotel side, De-Sanctis said. The bar will be connected tooneof thenightclubs, and featuredaybedsfor those seeking relaxation in the sun.

For a man who played “The Gam-bler” inmoviesand in song,KennyRog-ers admits he’s had a lucky streak hisentire career.

“It’s amazing how things happen forme. I walk away from something andjust fit right in somewhere else. Mywhole life, that’s how it’s been,” Rogerssaid by phone from the road in Louisi-ana, where he is touring in support ofhis close friend Lionel Richie. Richiehas an album out next week featuringcountry duets.

Indeed, the name of Rogers’ autobi-ographydue in the fall is titled “Luck orSomething Like It.” He just turned inthe final chapter.Anamateurphotogra-pher, Rogers will release the first of aseries of photo books at the end of theyear, this one titled “AmericanBeauty.”

Rogers also started work on an al-bum forWarner Brothers, but don’t ex-pect to hear any new material when heperforms at Harrah’s Saturday night.Instead, prepare for a greatest hitsride.

“It’s what people want to hear,” saidthe73-year-old legend. “Idon’t like todonew songs because the audience has towork to see if they like the song. Withthe hits, everybody likes them. Thegood thing is I have enough hits.”

The hits date to his days with TheFirstEdition.Thegroupscoredwith thepsychedelic-inspired “Just Dropped In(To See What Condition My ConditionWasIn),”whichwasfollowedbythepopand country chart success of “Ruby,Don’t Take Your Love To Town,” forwhich the group was billed as KennyRogers and The First Edition. Eventu-ally, he went off on his own with hitssuch as “The Gambler,” “Islands in theStream” and “We’ve Got Tonight.”

Ironically, Rogers never saw him-self as a solo singer. “I love singing har-mony. We’re all equal partners.”

He was one of numerous voices inthe ultimate harmony record “We Are

The World,” written by Richie and Mi-chael Jackson. He and Richie go backwell before those days. When Richieleft the Commodores, Rogers insistedhe move to L.A. if he wanted a solo ca-reer.

“He lived in my guest house,” saidRogers, who just appeared in the SXSWFestival in Austin with Richie.

The autobiography, a reluctant pro-ject, won’t be a derogatory tell-all or abook designed to stir up feuds. It willmention some of the weird facets of hiscareer.

Like what, you ask? Like the timewithTheFirstEditionwhen they forgotto tip the guy $100 to ensure the ampswere checked in as luggage on a com-mercial flight. “The amp got sent off toAustralia.”

Or the time Rogers played in SaudiArabia to people who had no clue abouthim or his music. “I found out if yougive people on the front row tambou-rines, it doesn’t matter if they knowyour music. They love tambourines.”

For the third straight year, Go Go Gad-jet played the final set in last month’sThon, the annual student fund drive atPennState thatraisesmoneyforchildren’scancer. Thon raised a record $10.6 millionthis year.

“We were the last act before the totalswere announced. We got to play before15,000 people at the Jordan Center. It wasall emotions. We invited some of the chil-dren on stage,” said lead singer and PennState alum Jeff Tomrell.

Playingapackedarena is not a commonoccurrence for the Reading, Pa.-basedband, which earns its keep playing clubsfrom Atlantic City to State College. OnMarch 30, Go Go Gadjet will be the mainattraction at Backstage at the House ofBlues, playing a venue which in recentmonths featured TheGin Blossoms, Filterand other hit-makers.

Playing a big arena once a year or tak-ing the same stage as The Gin Blossomsdoesn’t make the band eager for stardom. It is quite content to play covers.

“We have zero aspirations to recordoriginal music,” Tomrell said. “There’s nomoney tobemade thatwayasarock ’n’ roll

band. And it’s nice to go home every nightto see my wife, especially with a child onthe way.”

That doesn’t mean the band doesn’thave fans. The Penn State connection fol-lows thebandwherever it goes, even to theJersey Shore. “A lot of Penn Staters cometo our shows,” Tomrell said.

What these fanscomefor is acover rep-ertoire that includes The Beatles, KanyeWest, and everything in between, with alean toward current dance-oriented hitssuch as Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.”

“We’re likeDJswith instruments,” saidTomrell, who comes with a musical pedi-gree. He played piano from an early age.His father was a band director. “I was des-tined to be a musician,” he said.

When the folks atMilton, Del.-basedDogfish Head brewery approachedRyanHornerwith a proposal for a beertasting at Mia, the restaurant generalmanager was all in.

Dogfish Head and Mia will partneron a six-course dinnerMarch 29 pairedwith six vintage brews. The event coin-cides with the 2012 Atlantic City BeerandMusic Festival onMarch 30 and 31.

The paring of beer — rather thanjust wine — with gourmet food says alot about the evolution of craft beers.

“The beer game has changed sincethe late 1980s. It’s taken to a whole newlevel,” Horner said.

While similar to wine tastings, beerhasmorepersonality thanwine, hesaid.“Every beer has a different flavor,” hesaid.

Where various Cabernet wines willbe the samewith a specific dish, IndianPale Ale, for example, will produce adifferentresultwithadifferentversionof the brew, Horner said.

The purpose of such a pairing is tomaximize the flavors of both the beerand food.

“We build themenu around the beer,to enhance the taste of the food and thebeer,” Horner said of the approach byChefPaulHanley. “We lookat theactualnotes on thebeeranduse the flavorpro-file to create a menu around the beer. It’s a nice romance, a relationship be-tween dish and beverage itself.”

Selections that night include a 2007Olde School Barley Wine, one brewedwith a larger alcoholic content, makingit fall between wine and beer. It will bepaired with beer braised short ribs, creamy leek compote and fried crispyleeks.

Mustard and herb-crusted lambchopswithblack trufflebarlato, andDi-jon thyme sauce will be paired with a2007120MinuteIPA,anale infusedwithhops for 120 minutes, which brings outthehop flavor and increases the alcoholcontent.

Dessert will feature chocolate andraspberrymoltencakepairedwith2008Black and Blue, brewed with blackber-ries and blueberries.
