Week 5, Term 2, 2018
Every day counts, every minute counts
.
Kind regards,
Kathy King
Principal.
Principal’s News
It has been an interesting term 2 so far! There has been a teacher aide position become vacant again after recently
filing the position in term 2. There has been a number of staff on leave and this has created some challenges. I am
pleased to finally advise that we now have a new Teacher Aide who will commence on 28 May. Jenny Craigie
has transferred into the position from Mount Isa and she is very excited to be coming to Garbutt. I would like to
thank all of the applicants who applied for the position and welcome Jenny to the Garbutt School Community.
This term our staff have had some of the SIS team from Regional Office (Terrie Hookey and Reinhardt Gmeinder)
attend a staff meeting and lead staff in development of Cultural Competencies along with developing staff’s
knowledge and understanding of Indigenous protocols. Terrie also led discussions on how staff can embed Indig-
enous Perspectives into the Australian Curriculum. It is always a pleasure to have Terrie and Reinhardt share their
knowledge with us and we are looking forward to continuing this work together.
ANZAC DAY
ANZAC Day was observed by students and staff with two events. Firstly the school ceremony, which was very
capably led by our School Captains Tia and Krystel. The second event was the ANCAZ Day March. The PCYC
generously donated the bus to travel to and from The Strand. Twenty-four students attended along with staff. The
number of students attending was many more than last year and the March was enjoyed by all who attended. I am
hoping that even more children will attend next year.
NETBALL
Thanks to Mrs Schinkel, the year 4’s, 5’s and 6’s are playing Netball on Friday afternoons. Mrs Schinkel is also
trying to arrange games for our students to play against other schools on Friday afternoons. At the end of term a
Netball team will be selected to compete at the Cathy Freeman Cup on Palm Island on June 8. Only 10 students
will be selected as this year we have been advised that schools can only nominate one team.
OPEN CLASSROOMS AND DISCO
Next week we will hold Open Classrooms and Disco with a Sausage Sizzle. All families are invited to attend the
Open Classrooms and stay on for the Sausage Sizzle and Disco. The theme of the Disco is “Pyjama Party”. Be-
cause of issues at a previous event, when older children created a ruckus and did not listen to staff, only primary
school children and their younger siblings are able to attend the Disco. Entry to the disco is a gold coin donation.
3.30 pm—4.30 pm Open Classrooms—come along and enjoy your children’s work
4.30 pm—6.30 pm Sausage Sizzle and Disco (Garbutt State School students and younger siblings only)
REWARD’S DAY
This week we are having our second Reward’s Day for the year at the North Shore Aquatic Centre. I was very
disappointed to see that many children, who usually go to Rewards Day, are not going because of poor attendance.
Please ensure that children are at school every day for their learning and also so that they can be included in the
Reward’s Day activities.
Remember to come to the Open Classrooms and stay for the Disco. I look forward to seeing everyone
there!

2018 Anzac Day March.
Recently a group of students from Playmate Day Care and Kindergarten visited our
Garbutt SS library. They were joined by our year 4/5 class who partnered up with
them to read and discuss some of our great library books. Before this visit some of
the Playmate’s students did not know what a library was. All the Playmate’s students
had a great time visiting and reading our books and our year 4/5 students really
enjoyed mentoring them. We look forward to their next visit.
