All students are required to take two semesters (one full year) of a fine arts class in middle school. Fine Arts classes include choir, band, orchestra, art or theatre arts. It is highly recommended that all students take a fine arts class as a 6th grader.
All students are required to take four semesters of P.E during their middle school years; at least one semester of PE per school year.
Garner has an 8 period day. Each class period is 45 minutes long with 4 minutes to transition from class to class; lunch is 30 minutes long.
Every 6th grade student will take the following classes:

Courses by Grade and Subject
Pre-Advanced Placement courses in middle school are available to any students willing to take on the academic challenges.
Pre-AP English, Pre-AP Reading, and Pre-AP Math are offered to all 6th grade students.
Students wishing to rank in the top 10% of their high school class are encouraged to pursue rigorous academic courses.
** A parent/guardian and student signature is required on the Advanced Program Expectation and Course Agreement form (on the back of the choice sheet). If the Advanced Program Expectation and Course Agreement form is not signed by both a parent/guardian and student, the student will not be placed in a Pre-AP class.
P-AP English is open to all students; it is recommended that the student have strong skills in the subject area.
Pre-AP English must be taken with Pre-AP Reading.

**Students who successfully complete Algebra I and pass EOC exam as an 8th grader will receive one H.S. credit.
AIM is offered as a full year course.
The focus of AIM is to enhance the curriculum by providing enrichment and/or support to the core academic subjects.
AIM also teaches students important skills such as study habits, note-taking, test taking strategies, organizational skills, time management, goal setting, and character education.
Art I is offered as a full year course.
Students will learn the fundamentals of art.
Art I provides a study of the art elements and principles through experiences with a variety of art media and tools in design, drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, photographic imagery, and electronic media- generated art; identifies and compares artwork across time and culture; and evaluates artwork through discussion and critique.
AVID is an academic support program that prepares students for college readiness and success in a global
society.
Avid is offered as a full year course in which students participate in college style study groups, college and cultural field trips, and diverse learning experiences.
Students interested in AVID must complete an application.
Band and Orchestra are offered as full year courses.
Band is designed for students who exhibit an interest in learning a band instrument.
Orchestra is designed for students who exhibit an interest in learning how to play the violin, viola, cello, or string bass.
Students must be willing to commit to outside school practice sessions and performances and remain in the program for the entire year.
All students will participate in UIL competitions.
Choir is offered as a full year course.
Beginning choir builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding developed in elementary school. Students in this course will experience singing in unison and in parts, with an emphasis placed on proper vocal techniques and sight-reading skills.
Students must be willing to commit to outside school practice sessions and performances and remain in the program for the entire year.
All students will participate in UIL competitions.
Debate is offered as a full year course.
Topics covered in this course include logic, persuasion, speaking and debate formats, philosophy and current events Students will research, write, and present original works, as well as critically evaluate works from others.
It is important to have excellent reading and writing skills.
6th grade students take one semester of P.E. and one semester of Health.
Technology Applications is offered as a full year course.
The Technology Applications curriculum has four strands: foundations, information acquisition, work in solving problems, and communication.
This course provides students an opportunity to acquire information in a variety of ways. Students complete projects involving work processing, databases, spreadsheets, multimedia, desktop publishing, graphics, and telecommunications.
Theatre Arts I is offered as a full year course.
This class is an introductory level course which allows the student to study a variety of aspects of theatre performance.
Students who are part of the bilingual program at their elementary school can choose to participate in the Dual Language at Garner.
Students enrolled in the Dual Language Program are required to take a Spanish Literacy class as one of their electives, as well as the Dual Language Social Studies Spanish Class.
Regular attendance and passing grades are a requirement of the program.
Students and parents will have opportunities to carefully examine course offerings and course descriptions.
On your choice sheet, choose 4 electives and rate them 1-4 (1 will be your first choice, 2 second choice, etc.)
Not turning in your choice slip on time may hinder your chances of getting the electives of your choice.

Yes! Garner has a dress code:• Boys: solid navy or khaki pants or shorts
• Girls: solid navy or khaki pants, shorts, skort, skirt, or dress/jumper (must be within 3 inches from top of knee. Pants and shorts must be hemmed. Sweatpants and pajama pants are prohibited
• Solid navy, white, or royal blue shirt with collar. Shirts must have buttons and sleeves. Visible undershirts must be white only
• Spirit shirts from Garner or MacArthur may be worn any day of the week; spirit shirts from other campuses are not allowed
• Students may wear jeans (blue or' black) on Friday with a college shirt. The college shirt must represent an accredited college. Jeans may not sag, have holes, shreds or are torn and must be hemmed
• Oversized clothing is not permitted
• Hair color must be natural color
