30 Years Experience

Francis Metcalfe, of North End Gardens, Bishop Auckland, was accompanied by a social worker, when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court. The 51 year old faced charges that, on 11th July, at South Church, he committed assault and used threatening language and behaviour during an altercation with a lady in her seventies. The court heard that an argument developed whilst Metcalfe was out walking his dog and that

during police interview, he admitted grabbing the old lady by the shoulder, tearing her top, striking her twice to the face and kicking her. He stated that she had hit him in the face with her handbag, bursting his nose. Metcalfe suffers with mental health problems. The District Judge stated that he was looking at a diversion from the court and adjourned matters until 3rd September before releasing the defendant on conditional bail.

Evidence neededAnita Elena Jupoiu, aged 21, who lives in a refuge in Newcastle Upon Tyne, was excused attendance at Newton Aycliffe Mag-istrates’ Court, where a guilty plea to a charge of obstructing a police officer in the execution of duty and a not guilty plea to a charge of assault-ing a police officer were entered. The defence informed the District Judge that a full file had not been

received from the Crown. However, the judge read an email message from the defendant’s solicitor which stated that the defendant would be unable to attend the trial, listed for 20th August, as she would be on holiday. It was agreed that more evidence would be needed before the court would vacate the trial. The charges arise out of an incident in Bishop Auckland on 14th April.

Stephen Grey of Dewberry Court, Etherley Dene is supporting the Ambitious About Autism charity in a gruelling bike ride next month. On Sunday 7th September he will take on the Rapha Manchester to London Ride, which is a remarkable 220 miles in one day, cycling from the Manchester Velodrome to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.Ambitious about Autism works to improve the services available for children and young people with autism, and increase awareness and understanding of the condition.Stephen comments, “1 in 100 children have autism, a lifelong neurological condition that has no cure. There are around 100,000 children with autism in the UK.“Both my boys, Ethan and Aaron, have this condition. My wife Elaine and I have a tough daily challenge to take on, which has really changed our lives. “It’s a similar challenge for many other families

like ours and I would like to do something to help others. “It’ll take a big effort to ride 220 miles in one day from Manchester to London, but it’s worth doing if I can help other families and people with

Autism cope with this everyday challenge”.If you would like to support Stephen or would like more information about his challenge, visit his page: http://uk.v i rg inmoneyg iv ing.com/StephenGray28.

King James I Academy in Bishop Auckland has been awarded the Young Carers’ Charter following its work with Glenys Newby from Family Action’s The Bridge Young Carers’ Project. Glenys visited the school to speak to students about the role of young carers, how they might be identi-fied and about the support available to them and, as a result, the Academy has established a comprehen-sive support network. The award was pre-sented to Val Bainbridge, Academy Student Support Worker and designated contact for young carers at the school. She said, “We are very proud to accept the Young Carers’ Charter. It is recognition of our work to support our young carers at King James and it has helped us to re-focus on the needs of our students. We will continue to raise awareness about the issues they face and

Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership has put together a plan to fight anti-social behaviour after several residents made complaints about people’s conduct in Bishop Auckland Recreation Ground.A recently held meeting discussed problems such as littering, underage drinking and the accompanying broken glass found in grass. The meeting was chaired by the AAPs Andrew Walker, with representatives for the Durham Constabulary and other organisations

attending. Also in attendance was Cllr. Sam Zair who argued that dealing with the problem would take time. He said, “It is going to be a long haul. There isn’t a quick solution to the problem. What has happened is we have brought it to the forefront of people’s minds.“It isn’t just Bishop Auckland. The majority of parks have these sorts of problems. It has probably been left that little bit too long.“There is a lot going on in this park for the children

and we want them to be able to enjoy it without worrying about things like broken glass and anti-social behaviour”.Measures introduced to tackle the problems include foot patrols, funding for alcohol outreach and posters encouraging people to report problems. Cllr. Zair is also eager to see an alcohol-free zone introduced and enforced in the recently refurbished park. He believes this would reduce anti-social behaviour and make it easier for the police to do their job.

Students at King James I Academy are again cel-ebrating after another suc-cessful year of Sixth Form study. Year 13 students have achieved particu-larly good results and all students have gained the necessary qualifications to support them as they move into Higher Education, training or employment. A-Level achievement in Art, Photography, Business, Performing Arts, Science and Geography were par-ticularly noteworthy, as was the achievement of all students in a range of voca-tional qualifications includ-ing Business, Sport, Music, Health & Social Care, Child-care, Media and Travel & Tourism. Positive achieve-ment in Year 12 in many subjects will allow younger students to continue their studies, and should make next year similarly success-ful. Caitlin Gowland and Paige Marshall achieved well across a range of Year 12 subjects and reflected outstanding achievement in Mathematics, Law and Physics.Star performers, in Year 13, included Kara Munro (A* in Performing Arts, A in Business and A in Applied Science) and Daniel Win-

terburn (A* in Art, A* Pho-tography and Distinction* in Media). It is worth noting that many other students achieved similar success and that all those who wish to go to University gained a place on a course of their choice.A spokesperson for said, “King James prides itself on ensuring that all students are well supported and have the opportunity to make progress into Higher Edu-cation and ultimately into the career of their choice. Once again, Sarah Newton, Aim Higher Coordinator, Anne Goddard, Progression

Tutor, and Linda Dixon, award-winning Sixth Form Mentor, have worked tire-lessly to support students and ensure that they achieve their potential. These staff, together with a dedicated Sixth Form Tutor Team, help King James to recruit an ever-increasing number of students into their Sixth Form”. The Academy paid tribute to the hard work of the students and to parents and teachers who have contrib-uted to this year’s success, and wished students good luck as they move on to pastures new.

Young Bishop Auckland runner Chloe Fairclough is hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Shildon Running Club member Kate Avery, who finished 4th in the 10,000m at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.Chloe, who lives in Mayfield Walk, St. Helens, celebrated her 11th birthday on August 9th with another great run, setting a new female 11 to 14 years old record at the Hackworth Park parkrun in Shildon.Chloe started running when she was only 3 years old when her dad, Darren, took her on a fun run in Darlington. When she was 8 years old her teacher at Copeland Road Primary School in West Auckland recommended that she join a club, as her running ability was something special. Chloe became a member of the Shildon club, running middle distance but also training with the sprint group. Last year she came 2nd in the Under 11 Junior Great North Run, beating hundreds of similar aged competitors. Another tremendous feat was coming 3rd in the Monkton Minors Winter Indoor League, as all the other competitors were much taller than Chloe.

Following in the footsteps of Northern track star

Other great victories to her credit are the Raby Castle 5k, which she has won 2 years running. So far Chloe has won 6 Parkruns, which is for female runners of any age. Altogether, she has won over 20 prominent middle distant races.Parkruns is a nationwide scheme that offers free 5km races to people of all ages and abilities in parks and open spaces. Before her birthday Chloe was ranked as 10th in the UK Parkrun series, which is

a national ranking system. Chloe is starting St. John’s R.C. School in September and has also earned a place at Bishop Barrington elite Sports Academy. She attends her running club in Shildon twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays, and she hopes to become a better runner than Paula Ratcliffe. For more about or to join the running club, visit www.shildonrunning.co.uk or for Parkrun visit www.parkrun.org.uk

On Saturday 9th August Bishop Auckland Golf Club played Seaton Carew in the 7th round of the National Mail on Sunday Team Classic last 32. The match was played at High Plains, Bishop Auckland, on a bright but blustery day with 5 players from each club. The teams were evenly matched. However, Wayne Hewitt of Bishops, playing against Durham County Golfer Hughie Hamilton ran out a comfortable winner, winning his match 7 & 5; a great start for Bishops. The second match proved to be a lot tighter when Graham Milne pitched his ball next to the 18th hole for a birdie that left his Seaton Carew

opponent Ian Hendry to sink a monster putt to win the match and level the game. It wasn't long before the result of the third game was known, with Paul King, representing Bishops, losing his match to scratch golfer Jonathan Conley 3 & 2. The fourth game fortunate-ly swung back the Bishops way, with 4 handicapper Andrew Graham squaring the match with a solid 4 & 3 victory over Seaton Carew’s Matthew Davidson, who is soon to start an American golf scholarship. In the final match was Jamie Birkbeck, who over the years has won decisive matches resulting in Clark Cup wins and, of course, the Mail on Sunday Compe-
