Auckland Castle’s newest team player is hot to trot!

Visitors may find Auckland Castle’s latest crowd-pleaser a bit of a swine. But despite its piggish reputation, it’s an attrac-tion that’s set to hog the limelight. The addition to the castle’s growing list of visitor friendly exhibits is a larger than life boar sculpture that’s taken up residence in Auckland Castle’s 151 acre medieval Deer Park. The work has been spe-cially commissioned by the Auckland Castle Trust in honour of the property’s furry mascot, Bosley Boar, whose ancestor is said to have been an enormous and ferocious wild pig that terrorised the area in the Middle Ages. The story goes that the then Bishop of Durham – who lived like a prince in his palace at Auckland Castle – offered a huge reward to anyone who could kill the beast. Many tried but all were gored to death. But a young knight by the name of Richard Pollard succeeded through guile and ingenuity where

others had failed. He slew the monster and cut out its tongue as a keepsake. The curly tailed story of Pollard’s Brawn, or boar, is now the stuff of local legend. But it is hoped the yarn will live on for a new gen-eration with the unveiling of Auckland Castle’s new sculpture.Made from galvanised wire, it is the work of celebrated North Yorkshire-based sculptor Emma Stothard. Her remarkable animal and human likenesses have found homes in many well-known locations, including Highgrove House where a large scale sculpture of HRH Prince of Wales’ beloved Jack Russell dog, Tigga, made from willow grown on the Gloucester-shire estate, stands in the garden.Grace English, Auckland Castle’s Education and Outreach Officer said, “We’re thrilled that Auckland Castle is now home to one of Emma’s amazing pieces. “It’s a fitting and very ex-pressive way to celebrate

a great Bishop Auckland legend and immortalise our own Bosley Boar.“Because it’s made of brushed galvanised wire children can climb over and sit on the sculpture. We hope it will become a much loved addition to our beautiful Deer Park and en-courage visitors to get out and explore the area.”Emma added, “It’s been a privilege to have worked on this project with the Auckland Castle team. It’s been a fantastic oppor-tunity to bring the legend of Pollard’s Boar to life through my sculpture.“I hope it will bring much enjoyment to all who discover him in his glade.”Auckland Castle’s new boar has been given a perma-nent home in the outer park. But its exact location is being kept a secret.“We are deliberately not telling visitors exactly where the sculpture is other than in a glade as we hope they will be inspired to hunt him out,” Grace says.“We want people to follow in Pollard’s footsteps and set out on their own ad-venture to track the boar down.”

College strikes gold after report praises commitment to staff

Bishop Auckland College has been praised for its commitment to staff after being awarded the Investors in People Gold standard.A six day inspection, which included interviews with 40 members of staff found there were positive relationships between col-leagues at all levels.IIP inspector Graeme Mills reported that the college provides a clear focus and direction and involves staff in decision making to build consensus. He said senior managers develop, lead and manage effec-

tively and that staff valued their visibility across the college. Reward and recog-nition processes help staff feel motivated and com-mitted, his report added.Organisations need to meet 165 evidence re-quirements to achieve the Investors in People Gold award and the college met 180, putting it in the top 7% of IIP accredited or-ganisations across the UK to reach the coveted gold standard.Principal and Chief Execu-tive Natalie Davison said, “We are an industrious and tight-knit community

here at Bishop Auckland College and this really shows through in the way we support our students.“Achieving the gold standard indicates world class best practice and a cutting-edge organisation in the way people work, develop and are managed in order to move the business forward. We are delighted this has been recognised by Investors in People.”Paul Devoy, Head of In-vestors in People, added, “The college should be extremely proud of this achievement.”

Dear Editor,

I recently started a project with the charity ‘Fixers’ to produce whistles to hand out to young girls. I wanted to supply girls with something to make them less vulnerable, to help them know what to do in an attack scenario.

The whistle is small and designed to look like a USB, so it’s very discreet on your keys or in your purse. I know young girls who have been in similar situations and even just a small whistle would have helped them out of it.

As the project started to come together, it was selected to appear on ITV news on the 26th of August. This led to me being contacted by people across the North East requesting whistles for their friends, daughters and for themselves. However, I ran out of whistles and ‘Fixers’ can no longer fund my project, which is why I’m looking for a local sponsor or investor to help me carry on producing whistles to hand out at local schools.

If you are interested or would like some whistles once my project is funded again, please contact me at [email protected] or if you’d like to help my cause personally look out for my Rape Prevention Project on www.crowdfunder.com.

To find out more about my project visit www.Fixers.org.uk where you can also watch my news appearance.

Castle puts children’s artistic talents in the frame

Snap-happy children have helped put Auckland Castle in the picture as part of an inspirational project aimed at transforming their lives. The 16 youngsters have spent the past year photo-graphing and drawing the magnificent palace of the Prince Bishops of Durham as part of a pilot scheme aimed at helping young people find their voice through the power of the creative arts. The seven and eight year-olds from St John’s Church of England Primary School in Shildon then had their artistic endeavours brought to a wider audience with a special exhibition at the Bishop Auckland castle.Around 80 pictures and photographs featuring Auckland Castle as seen through the eyes of the children were in the display. It is the culmination of

the year-long experimen-tal Children Hidden Harm Intervention and Recovery Project (CHIRP) commis-sioned by Durham County Council in partnership with the Auckland Castle Trust and Durham Alliance for Community Care (DACC). Grace English, Auckland Castle’s Education and Outreach Officer who has been working with the group, said, “This is a really powerful exhibition which showcases the children’s creativity and ideas.“This ambitious 12 month project set out to give children living in County Durham the opportunity to explore, learn, create and be heard in a safe and in-spiring environment.“What the group has been doing is fun, but having worked with them for the past year I have seen how art and photography can have a life changing

effect on children who, through circumstances out of their control, may be shy, reserved and under-confident.“Armed with a camera or a paint brush I have seen how given free rein to express yourself imaginatively can unlock your confidence and self-esteem and raise your aspirations.”The CHIRP project began in September 2013 and has been based at Auckland Castle. Its aims matched those of the charitable Auckland Castle Trust which is working to create a viable and vibrant future for Bishop Auckland and the surrounding area.A book featuring the chil-dren’s work is planned and following the success of the pilot project, it is hoped CHIRP will be rolled out to other heritage venues and schools around County Durham.

TV presenter Rachel Riley recently launched Astellas Innovation Challenge, which is a competition aimed at inspiring school students to take up STEM subjects, and pupils at King James in Bishop Auckland have already taken part in the project.Only 37% of students aged 11 – 16 years think they would be likely to take up STEM subjects in higher education at university and beyond, despite 83% claiming they are inter-ested in these subjects at school. Studying STEM subjects, (Science, Tech-nology, and Engineering & Mathematics) can open up so many doors for young people and lead to prom-ising careers in a diverse range of fields, such as computing, health and even broadcasting. The Astellas Innovation Challenge is asking the next generation of would-be en-

trepreneurs and innovators to design a mobile app that encourages healthy living. Recent research revealed that technology is an intrin-sic part of school students’ everyday lives, with 87% of 11 to 16 year-old having a mobile/smartphone and more than three quarters (77%) confirmed they use apps at least once a day. Furthermore, school stu-dent’s appetite for apps is reaching a record high, with over two thirds (70%) having 11 or more apps on their mobile devices. The nationwide competi-tion is for pupils who are in Years 10 & 11 with the closing date for entry being Friday 24th October. The final will be hosted in London on Tuesday 25th November. For more information on the competition including how to enter go to www.astellas.eu/innovation-challenge.

On Sunday 14th September, the U13 BARUFC travelled to West Hartlepool.James kicked off, with Luke catching the flighted ball to set up a 20m drive down the right hand side. For the next 10 minutes both sides held the ball well, but West managed to pass the ball to one of their strong-est players who outpaced the defenders, and the U13s found themselves two tries down in as many minutes.Showing great determi-nation Jordan, Edward and Nicholas held West’s forwards before Ben com-pleted a try saving tackle. With this the U13s level of effort increased and James won a penalty through some excellent rucking. This was followed by a

scrum where West had the put in, but sniping around the back of the scrum, Luke snatched the ball away from his opposite number and sprinted over the line; James converted, pulling the score back to 10-7. Bishop duly kicked off and Jordan rose to meet the ball with a perfect catch. Using his strength he managed a 20m, solo run, knocking over several players, setting up Edward, Luke and Ben who combined well. At the start of the second half, Josh and Nicholas were working hard in the maul, with some excellent ripping from Jack, winning a penalty 15m from West's line. A quick tap penalty from Luke set up James, who scored and converted,

giving a 10:14 lead to the visitors. Luke then saw an op-portunity and nipped in for his second try. With a very narrow angle, James produced a kick out of Rob Andrew's catalogue, taking the score to 10:21.West then pulled the score back to 17:21. With the game evenly balanced, Luke completed an excellent run, setting Jack up for a try, pushing the score to 17:26.Following the restart, Ben caught the ball just in front of his 22m line, he ploughed through two players along the right touch line, bursting through the defensive line to score a try, which James converted taking the winning score to 17:33 in Bishop’s favour.
