On Friday 24th July, RHS judges arrived in Catterall as part of the Wyre in Bloom competition. This is the first year that our village has entered and the Catterall in Bloom team of volunteers has been working hard for months, watering, weeding and helping Tim Hoyles, our Parish Lengthsman, keep our village neat and tidy.

It was a joy to have so many people support us on the day, especially the Stone Cross Gardens residents who appeared in force to greet the judges at the site of the new garden.

We were delighted that the stunning stone seating, provided by Catterall Parish Council, had been delivered to the new garden in time for the judges visit.

The judges seemed pleased with the colourful front gardens in Catterall and ended their visit at The Lodge Park where they met and talked

    CATTERALL IN BLOOM

to the residents about their beautiful gardens.

Many small businesses and families supported the Catterall in Bloom initiative by sponsoring planters or hanging baskets and even a chicken coop! The latter has been filled with logs and is now a bespoke Bee and Bug house. The judges were very interested in the new Water Bowser too, which has been used around the village throughout the dry weather spells.

The Bloom team would like to thank all supporters for making our village a brighter and happier place in which to live. Many volunteers took part in this competition and it is their unfailing support and hard work that has helped make this venture a successful one.

Thank you everyone!Netta Parker (01995) 605385Catterall in Bloom Representative

September sees the start of the Camera Clubs winter programme, full details of which can be found through the Garstang and District Arts Society website, or direct through our own at www.garstang-camera-club.co.uk

Throughout the winter, we usually meet the first three Wednesdays in the month. This month we are going to kick off on Wed 2nd Sept with an evening with Dave Wilkinson, who will deliver a presentation entitled An Evening of Sport & Natural History Images. Definitely an evening of two halves.

On Wed 16th Sept, we are visited by Gwynn Robinson, who will deliver Something for Nothing which he says demonstrates how vision, creativity and openness to new ideas are central to our art, or in the words of Edgar Degas, Art is not what you see but what you make others see. All this being possible from the camera built into an i-phone.

In between, on Wed 9th Sept , we have what are called on the programme workshops, where we try to show how to improve the quality of the pictures we take.

There will be a demonstration by a club member of basic editing in a photographic computer programme, such as Photoshop Elements or Lightroom (or possibly GIMP).

The idea will be at the end of the evening to give everyone an image (or we could choose one of our own) and see what we can do

with it with our own software (and how to get some if you do not already have any).

In the next workshop, on the 21st of October, we will show

    GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB

our efforts for the feedback of fellow club members (so it will be gentle and hopefully humorous). All this picture got was the comment, Who stole the stem?

New members are always welcome. For full details, see the website.

    GARSTANG RUNNING CLUB

    Half Marathon

The annual Half Marathon organised by Garstang Running Club takes place on Sun 13th Sept, starting at 11:00am outside The Royal Oak in the centre of town.

The undulating route heads out through Catterall to the Brockholes Arms, past Claughton Village Hall circling Claughton via May Lane. From there the runners go through Barnacre and onto Scorton after experiencing the worst of the hilly bits - not for the faint hearted this one!

Fortunately it is fairly short! From Scorton the finish is on the water-intake road next to Garstang Sports and Social Club making a total distance of 13.1 miles sounds easy doesnt it?

Last year the winner finished the half marathon in just over 1 hour 15 minutes while the last of the 148 finishers came in at just

    under 2 hours 35 minutes.

So, how about having a go? Entries can be made using an entry form which can be found at www.garstangrc.co.uk and costs 10 for affiliated runners or 12 if not. I have continued to meet with a great many local residents and bank customers, including outside NatWest where you kindly shared your own experiences with me.

I wrote to NatWest expressing the strong feelings you have for the branch and reminding them of their television advert We will never close the last bank in town explaining that because of that they had won a great deal of goodwill and custom which was being lost over the news of the closure.

As a result, NatWest have made the decision to introduce a new Mobile Bank service which will visit the community at Knott End-on-Sea every week. This will be subject to local agreement and planning consents to

NatWest customers will also be able to continue to access their banking in a number of other ways in the local area including telephone banking, online and mobile banking, at the ATM, at an alternative NatWest branch or Knott End-on-Sea Post Office.

NatWest is now engaging with relevant local parties for the necessary permissions to introduce the Mobile Bank service in the local community, and I have said I will support this introduction.

NatWest is also keen to ensure that the service is sufficient to meet with local demand in the long-term, so once in place they will monitor the service, listen to feedback and

CAT SMITH MPinvestigate the possibility of extending the time of the service in the future.

I am also asking about the possibility of the Mobile Bank visiting other local villages on its way to and from Knott End.

Fracking UpdateIm very disappointed to see the Government announce plans to override the decisions of local councils when it comes to fracking.

Lancashire County Council considered all the evidence from the proposed sites at Roseacre and Preston New Road and I believe made the right decision for our community in rejecting the planning applications.

For the Government to override this shows their commitment to the fracking industry above their respect for the citizens of this nation. Perhaps the most obvious hypocrisy is allowing local communities to reject on-shore wind and not extending this right to unsightly,

Summer EventsThis summer I have really enjoyed attending local events across our community including Preesall and Knott End Gala and Pilling Coffee Feast where I was given the tough tasks of judging some awards.

Needless to say a lot of effort goes into these days and a huge thank you to everyone who works hard for many months beforehand to make this happen.

I have also been out in the Dolphinholme area with Broadband for the Rural North B4RN who are digging their own broadband service where BT and Openreach have failed to do so.

At a time when our rural services are under threat its great to see the community coming together to help some of our rural farmers, families and businesses connect to a

broadband which is much faster than what is provided in urban parts of Lancashire.

Im a huge supporter of local companies setting up and challenging the big companies and I know many of you are too as their waiting list for broadband is growing faster than the trenches can be dug or the cables can be laid.

As I write, United Utilities have eradicated the bug from the Treatment Centre and are now testing to ensure that the whole network of pipes is flushed and the water received in our homes is safe to drink again.

During my visit I learned about the measures United Utilities have been taking and what will be done to prevent future incidents.

I was pleased to meet some of the workers at the Treatment Centre, many of whom have been working 24 hour shifts. United Utilities has agreed to pay compensation to those affected and is currently working on the finer detail of how the compensation would be delivered.

    NatWest Closure

I am disappointed that the Royal Bank of Scotland has decided to proceed with the closure of the Natwest branch in Knott-End in September.

It is a cruel irony that the bank had used the branch for their advertising campaign back in 2011 when they promised not to close the last bank in town. The Natwest branch is, of

    BEN WALLACE MP (cont)

    course, Knott-Ends only bank.

While not in my constituency, I know residents from Stalmine use the branch, as the next closest bank is in Poulton.

I wrote several weeks ago to the Chief Executive of Natwest to put forward the case for the bank remaining open, but the bank seems set on proceeding with the closure.

I have been informed that while the closure will go ahead, a mobile bank will visit Knott-End and it has been agreed that the Post Office will offer banking services. While not ideal, I do hope these measures will mean that local residents and traders can continue to carry out their banking in Knott-End.

    COMPUTER SAFETY

This month we turn to some of the most important software on a PC or laptop internet security packages. As the name implies, this special software is all about trying to keep you safe and secure. There are three main parts to consider: firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware. You can choose to use separate pieces of software to cover each section or implement a single combined product to handle everything.A firewall is software designed to prevent unauthorised access to your computer over the internet. It acts as a shield around your machine which only allows good traffic to come in, and should also alert you if there is any sign of bad activity trying to send information out. Examples include the free Windows Firewall which is included on machines using Windows or paid-for packages such as Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, Kaspersky, McAfee, Panda and AVG Internet Security, all of which offer the full range of security measures in a single product. The second element in the security bundle is anti-virus software. This aims to prevent your machine from being affected by various forms of malware, short for malicious software . Malwear is software used or created by hackers to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to systems often referred to as viruses. This includes both known (ie. old threats) and new ones which have not been previously identified. If a virus does make it through the defences, then a good package should still pick it up and clean it off later by running regular system scans. There are again several free options (including Microsofts Security Essentials or Defender, AVG Anti-Virus and Avast) as well as the paid-for combined packages already mentioned.

  • 35Tell them you saw it in the Garstang Focus

    COMPUTER SAFETY (cont)

The final component is concerned with eliminating spyware ie. a specific type of malware that secretly monitors your computer activity or scans for private information to send back to the hacker. Microsofts Windows Defender is a free spyware tool built-in to most versions of Windows. Their Security Essentials package covers both spyware and viruses and all the paid-for integrated security packages will also deal with spyware. There is no single best product for security; ask ten people for an opinion and you will probably get at least six different recommendations. Some packages perform better in independent tests one month and then drop down the league table next time. There are two vitally important things to remember the first is that you MUST make

sure that you do something, even if its just a case of switching on the free Microsoft options (although these never really score the top marks in testing). And the second is that these products have got to be kept running and fully updated at all times. You should also make sure that the anti-virus software is set to perform regular scans of your machine. As usual, if you have any questions or concerns about security, then please do give me a ring for a quick chat.Joan Bailey 07528 173 891

    DOWN TO EARTH

Ive concluded that the only way to ensure some heat during the summer is to grow your own chillies, and its about this time of year that youll be able to start harvesting the fruits of your labour.Last year, due to the stonking weather, we had a bumper crop - many of ours are still languishing at the back of the freezer. This year, my friend Antonia (fellow heat freak) and I split some plants between us shes grown hers on the window sill and mine have been in the greenhouse but regardless, both have been slow to deliver.Antonia has complained that on one of her plants, quite a few of her flowers have dropped off leading to a disappointing yield - this can be due to a number of factors. As we all know, chillies originate from very warm climates and it can be a struggle to provide them with consistently high

temperatures. The flowers are more likely to drop if the temperatures are either too low - below 10C or too high - above 32C (chanced be a fine thing!)

Overwatering or underwatering will also cause premature flower drop. Let the chillies dry out on top before watering. Chillies are self-fertile but it has been proven that a helping hand from wind, insects or bees can help fruit set and increase chilli pepper yields obviously it doesnt help when our plants are being grown indoors. The one thing Antonia and I overlooked was providing potassium, a nutrient that helps the fruit to form an oversight that weve now rectified by feeding the plants with a seaweed fertiliser so hopefully well see an improvement in performance shortly. Both of us love cheese and like nothing better than pairing it with chilli jam so here is my

  • 37Tell them you saw it in the Garstang Focus

favourite recipe.Ingredients 150 grams deseeded fresh red chilli

peppers 150 grams deseeded red peppers 1 kilogram jam sugar 600 ml cider vinegar 6 x 250ml jars with vinegar-proof lids,

such as Kilner jarsMethod 1. Sterilize your jars and leave to cool. 2. Put the chillies into a food processor and

pulse until they are finely chopped. 3. Add the chunks of red pepper and pulse

again until you have a vibrantly red-flecked processor bowl.

    4. Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar in a wide, medium-sized pan over a low heat without stirring.

    5. Scrape the chilli-pepper mixture out of the bowl and add to the pan.

    6. Bring the pan to the boil, then leave it at a rollicking boil for 10 minutes.

    7. Take the pan off the heat and allow it cool. The liquid will become more syrupy, then from syrup to viscous and from viscous to jelly-like as it cools.

    8. After about 40 minutes, or once the red flecks are more or less evenly dispersed in the jelly ladle into your jars.

If you, like Antonia and I, enjoy risking eye watering, mouth burning chilli experiences then dont miss Holker Halls Chilli Fest on Sat 12th and Sun 13th Sept - a two day festival catering featuring cuisine from around the world and a variety of quirky gifts. Is your body too acidic? And if it is do you know what this means?

There is a school of thought that the modern western diet causes too much acidity in our body which creates the fertile soil for disease to take hold in our body.

The jury is out on this, mainly because research is fairly thin on the ground. This is for obvious reasons - nobody makes a profit from you changing your diet to help your health. Sad but true!

Our body is remarkably good at balancing our acid-alkali levels but from what I can see, constantly making taxing demands on it by eating acid forming foods causes attrition and will eventually affect our health.

The foods youre supposed to eat on the alkaline diet are good for you: some fruit and lots of vegetables and lots of water. Avoiding

sugar and processed foods is healthy, weight-loss advice too.

There is some evidence that a diet low in acid-producing foods like animal protein and bread and high in vegetables and fruit can help prevent kidney stones, keep bones and muscles strong, improve heart health and brain function, reduce low back pain, and lower risk for colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes.

Your choices are the key to your health, regardless of genetics and age and here are some easy ways to make better choices every day:

Choose white meat, seafood or a meat substitute over red meat

Rather than rolls or fries choose yeast-free bread or wild rice

Rather than cows milk drink soy or almond milk

  • Create meals around vegetables, rather than meat or starches

Exchange alcoholic beverages for sparkling water (though a little alcohol occasionally is good for you)

Fill your plate with plant foods first, leaving little room for acid-forming options

Choose vegetables or fruit over prepackaged snacks

Cook with cold-pressed olive oil, coconut oil and eat some butter from grass-fed cows instead of margarine and weird spreads made from vegetable oils

    Choose a 30-minute walk over a 30-minute TV sitcom

Reduce stress. Take up meditation, yoga, or some other relaxing method to restore peace

Are some natural foods even better than

others? When it comes to restoring the pH balance in your body to a more alkaline state, absolutely!

The top super foods that can help combat acidity and restore your pH balance are: lemon, avocado, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, seaweed (think sushi), pumpkin seeds, sea salt, kale, garlic and mineral water.

Avoid processed foods. Make your own sauces instead of pre-made ones in jars and, most importantly, do not fret if you have the odd bad day!

You can try out a pH test easily enough at good health food shops. Have a look at where your body is on the scale. This may help you create positive changes for your future health.

    CANVASSERS NEEDED IN WYRE

    Your Council Needs You!

Thats the message from Wyre Council which is looking for people who would like to earn money carrying out a door-to-door canvass of local households.

Areas where extra help is needed are Fleetwood (Park Ward and Pharos Ward Rural Areas), Calder Ward (including Bow-greave and Calder Vale), Garstang Ward (in-cluding Cabus and Nateby), Wyresdale Ward (including Bleasdale, Forton and Nether Wyresdale).

Canvassers will be working for the coun-cils electoral registration office and they are needed to help with the compilation of the an-nual Register of Electors. The role involves calling on those households who do not re-turn their electoral registration forms that were delivered recently.

This is a vital part of the democratic process because people who are not on the register cannot vote. This is particularly important as the Police and Crime Commissioner Elec-tions are due to be held on 5th May 2016.

The amount of payment depends on the area canvassed and full training will be given.

Anyone interested should contact Andrea Mullin on 01253 887257, email [email protected] or at Wyre Civic Centre, Breck Road, Poulton-le-Fylde, FY6 7PU.

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY)

A big thank you to Owd Nells for inviting us to hold a raffle at their annual Cider Festival. With their patronage and that of those who donated further prizes a fantastic 860.19 was raised towards a CRY screening in Matts memory. This couldnt have happened without the huge support we received from friends, old

and new, and from complete strangers. Folks came to the festival from all over the country so hopefully having the CRY stand there has helped spread the word further, potentially saving lives.

Twilight Treasure HuntCryptic clues, lots of laughter, delicious scones and a glorious sunset all perfectly completed our annual Twilight Treasure Hunt. It was lovely to see both novice and experienced teams taking part and winning prizes! Finding items along the route beginning with each of the letters from MATTHEW proved tricky for some, so the local Egg vendors had a particularly good evening! Well done Emma and Mark for setting and judging the hunt. Grateful thanks to our sponsors: Cobble Hey Gardens, Light Ash Caf and Shepherds Dairy, to the many raffle

    GARSTANG UNPLUGGED

2015 sees Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, winners of the 2014 BBC Folk Award, embarking on an exciting new project. They plan on recording their new album, Watershed, with an extended line up.Weve honed our sound as a duo and do a lot of multi-tasking to enlarge that sound, but when we heard these guys performing we knew we wanted to involve them in our next project says Hannah. They first met bass player, Matt Downer

  • playing with legendary Welsh band Jamie Smiths Mabon and soon had him working on their last studio album, Mynd. Working with Matt is a real pleasure, says Phil, Hes an incredibly intuitive musician with echoes of Danny Thompson in his sound.James Taylor completes the line-up on percussion and vibraphone. Phil says, We saw him performing with singer-songwriter Sean Taylor, and couldnt get over the sensitivity of his playing and his constant innovation - youve never seen someone play drums like this before. He combines a classical background with a feel for world and folk musics. The result is The Watershed Band, a unique collaboration that takes Phillip and Hannahs innovative duo sound to the next level of soulful expression combined with rhythmic drive.

    SEQUENCE DANCING

We have continued to go from strength to strength during the summer, attracting new dancers to the dances at Barton Village Hall. They are held every Saturday night now that the Hall at Pilling has been demolished. Our Thursday dances are held every fortnight from 7:45pm and are also thriving with attendances of around at 100 each session. The 3 entry fee has allowed us to donate to Dogs for the Blind, Trinity Hospice and several other local charities. The next project will be to jointly provide a defibrillator to be positioned just outside the Barton venue. The Barton dances have now been booked with the Hall for the whole of next year apart from a few evenings; these dates will be notified in Focus Magazine.

We are now looking forward to the fortnightly Tuesday evening dances at Claughton Memorial Hall which start on Wed 2nd Sept then continue fortnightly on Tuesdays throughout the winter.

The Sunday sequence dances will be soon starting at Kirkland once the autumn time clocks go back. The sounds of big bands and music from the shows and some golden oldies continue to keep us on our toes, mainly provided by the talented organist Alan Cookson and the extensive CD collection of John Lancaster who also shows us the occasional new dance such as the Spindle Swing which takes a bit of mastering. We always look forward to seeing new people attending the dances and would recommend this rewarding pastime to anyone who likes a good social evening with some exercise thrown in.Thanks again Green Book for spreading the word.Jim & Irene Farrimond

Secondary education is absolutely crucial so the choice of high school is one of the most important that ever has to be made.

We believe we offer the best all-round education in the area but we want parents to come and see for themselves. Everyone is welcome to come along, ask questions and look everywhere. We are very proud of our school and the students who make it so special.

GCSE Results 2015We are very proud of our Year 11 students who sat their GCSE exams this summer. They have again been very successful with some excellent results.

The EBacc figure, the governments measure of success across a broad range of academic subjects (English, Maths, Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities) was by far the best ever for Saint Aidans.

Last years figure of 31% was already one of the best in the Fylde. This years figure of 46% is a big increase on this and would have made us the highest performing state school in the Fylde by this measure last year.

Congratulations must go to our highest achieving student, Olivia Stupart, who achieved an amazing 12 A* and 1 A grade. We wish every one of our students all the best as they take the next step into further education and adult life.

New StudentsWe are all looking forward to the new term and, in particular, welcoming into our family all the new Year 7 students.

We understand what a big step starting at high school can be especially when the move is from a small primary school.

All our new parents are invited as well for the afternoon on Mon 8th Sept when Year 7s join us. They will be able to meet their son/daughters Form Tutor, look at their form room and learn about some of the lessons at high school as well as enjoy refreshments provided by our Parents Association.

Open Evening We will be holding our Open Evening on Wed 16th Sept 6:00pm 8:30pm. This is an opportunity to come and have a really good look round the school, meeting our students, staff and seeing what goes on the
