And now we’re offering the service to stations around the country on a non-exclusive basis. The best part? It’s free. Our artist news email is a polished, photo-heavy, twice-weekly email loaded with consumer-oriented news and information about country artists, with a peek-behind-the-curtain feel. Akin to our daily Country Aircheck email but oriented toward fans, the newsletter is delivered under each station’s own

My TuneS: MuSic THaT SHaped My life

Warner Music/Nashville VP/A&R Carole Ann Mobley discusses her most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Prince, The Met Center with Morris Day and The Time, 1983: He was in his prime and was pure sex onstage. He owned Minneapolis that night. 2. Etta James, Seven Year Itch: Barry Beckett brought out the bad-ass in Etta when she sang “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.” They were musical soulmates.

3. Bruce Springsteen, Nashville’s Sommet Center, Nov. 2009: A 60-year-old rock god showing them all how it’s done. He is the Boss. Plus, I was with a veteran Springsteen fan who knew every word to every song: fun!4. Hank Williams, Jr., Greatest Hits Vol. 1: His songs were personal, detailed accounts of his life, blended with cocky outlaw showmanship. He’s my blueprint for a country star. 5. Jamey Johnson, That Lonesome Song: I’m in awe of him. He played this for me when he first finished it. I knew then something amazing was about to happen for him, and for country music. Everything about him is all right with me.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Any Broadway musical. Not my thing.• An “important” piece of music/band you just don’t get: Jazz. I need a lyric and a melody; scatting bugs me. I don’t get it.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Too many to mention, but one special track is Joss Stone’s “The Chokin’ Kind” from The Soul Sessions. The most perfect delivery of a Harlan Howard classic by a 16-year-old girl from England. She sings it like a Mississippi Delta blues diva.

from James Taylor to the Beatles to Cat Stevens on the pop side, and Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and George Strait on the country side,” Jackson says. Wife Trisha Yearwood came onstage to perform two songs, and Brooks, of course, played many of his own hits, including requests. “At the very end, as he was shaking hands with people in the front row, he learned it was someone’s wedding anniversary,” Jackson says. “He grabbed his guitar and sang ‘If Tomorrow Never Comes’ without a microphone. It was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop; nobody made a sound. And then Garth said his voice was done and asked the audience to help. We all sang the next chorus and it was one of the most moving and amazing things I have seen at a concert. Indescribable.” KMLE/Phoenix AM hosts Tim and Willy saw the Friday night debut and Saturday’s late show. “The shows were different, but excellent,” Tim Hattrick says. “His first song Friday was ‘Mama Tried’ and the last was a request for ‘Ireland.’ Very casual and interactive. You are instantly reminded why he’s a superstar. His voice is still incredible. In fact, with only an acoustic guitar, there’s nothing to hide behind and it rings through.” KCYE/Las Vegas APD/MD/afternoon host Cadillac Jack says, “It was pretty overwhelming. Talk about a warm and friendly show – you didn’t think about anything else while you were there and you walked out with a smile on your face. You could really tell he was so excited to be there. And nervous. His voice was cracking at times as he talked. The show was definitely worth the money anyone would spend to see it.”

CA Helps Stations Connect During the CRS-40 keynote, Seth Godin noted that the fragmentation of mass media gives radio stations the opportunity to build self-perpetuating communities through “anticipated, personal and relevant” messages. At the time, Country Aircheck was rolling out a beta test of a product that is now helping more than 25 stations in top markets do just that.

header for delivery to their loyal listener database each week. News, birthdays, new album releases, photos and exclusive direct reporting from events nationwide give stations another tool for connecting with their core listeners. Among the stations already using the service are KKGO/Los Angeles, WUSN/Chicago, KSCS/Dallas, KBWF/San Francisco, KMPS/Seattle, WKLB/Boston, KYGO/Denver, WDSY/Pittsburgh, KSON/San Diego, WKIS/Miami, WSIX/Nashville and the entire Regent chain. Many customize the content, adding local nformation or linking to the station website. Others deliver the email exactly as produced. Either way, the email appears to be a seamless communication directly from station to listener. And, as noted, it is completely free. Seth Godin saw parallels between the radio and magazine businesses, and Country Aircheck is already helping stations realize that new reality. Contact Country Aircheck’s Gabrielle Graf for details on how your station can participate: 615-320-1450 or [email protected]. View examples at www.countryaircheck/station.

Chart Chat Congrats to Luke Bryan, Steve Hodges, Shane Allen and the whole Capitol promotion staff on earning Bryan’s first No. 1 this week with “Do I.” The song’s ascension also gives the 2009 Label of the Year it’s fifth-straight week atop the Country Aircheck/Mediabase chart following the four-week run by Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now.” Both songs, incidentally, list Lady A’s Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood as writers.

magazine’s “Top 10 Albums of 2009” list. “The Obama tune, ‘Welcome To The Future,’ attracted its share of ink,” Time’s Josh Tyrangiel writes, “but Paisley’s liberalism, optimism and multiculturalism fall safely within the confines of Nashville’s most important ideology: commercialism.” Miranda Lambert’s Revolution is No. 4 on the list.

Arbitron Fly-In (continued from page 1) Warner Music’s Bob Reeves says, “I have a radio background, albeit over 100 years ago, so I found a few segments fascinating. It made me realize that all my stop sets (in 1986) were scheduled in exactly the wrong place. And I’m glad I’m not the guy that has to try to keep these PPM participants compliant. Quite frankly, that sounds like a pain in the [neck].” Lyric Street’s Dale Turner was particularly struck by “the high level of listening in middays and afternoon drive. We need our artists on the air in those dayparts ... perhaps doing satellite radio interview tours there instead of morning drive. The issue is that many middays are voice tracked and air talent may not be available to conduct the interviews. Seeing the meters graph out over a 24-hour period shows that nobody is listening to the radio in overnights and there is a dramatic drop-off in the evenings. We need daytime daypart spins to really get enough audience familiarity with a new song to see hit potential.” KKGO/Los Angeles programmer and consultant Charlie Cook keyed in on the issues of spot placement and the differences between programming for PPM and diaries. “It was

cracked the mic was the calls/frequency? Today your brand is frequency and name, so say it often. “If you are not reading about marketing and building your brand, you might want to pick up a book and keep your job. Think about this: What does your P1 listener think about your radio station when they are not listening? Think of brand extensions. Do everything you can do on a weekly basis to be associated with known brands and try to keep it local. “Loyalty is very important for getting that P1 listener to come back, and you have to do it with occasions. If you haven’t mastered the art of promos for building occasions, you might want to get on the phone with a buddy or a consultant.”

interesting to see the impact of clearing out quarter hours so that stations can collect as much listening as possible in each quarter hour,” he says. “I also found it interesting that PPM puts the units versus minute argument to rest. A spot is a spot is a spot and listeners treat them equally – they leave when they come on. This presentation seemed also to dispute long spot sets as being culprits. In fact, it indicated that two spot sets was the best approach and five or six minutes probably made little difference. “Because I still work with clients who will never have PPM in their markets, I was disappointed to see how the real world does not apply to diary keeping. Manipulation of the measurement system is alive and well in diary markets and we are not often getting the truth from the diary keeper. Their habits play a bigger role than their actual listening. Changing the listener’s habits – and this needs to include marketing – will have more impact in diary markets. What they think they listen to, instead of what they actually listen to, is the key.” Consultant Joe Patrick compiled his list of “things you might want to know” about PPM. “Commercials have a measurable impact on a station’s performance,” he says. “Between 9am and 5pm the best average seems to be 11 minutes an hour. Do not do a ‘dark side of the hour.’ Your audience knows when you play too many commercials. “Many of us grew up on Bill Drake’s ‘forward motion/crush-roll radio’ of saying things in less than eight seconds. Guess what? It still applies with PPM. It’s all about being local and playing the hits. Remember when the first thing said when you
