Definition of GT
Placement of feeding tube through the skin and stomach wall directly into the stomach.
Indications
1. Prematurity .2. Sever cerebral pulse.3. Burns.4. Head trauma .5. Gastrointestinal disorder.6. Sever refusal to eat food.7. Sever food allergy .8. Sever cleft lip / cleft palate.9. Cancer .
Advantages of GT
The ability to provide additional food and calories .
No nasogastric tube are needed. Less time spent giving feeding. Feeding can be done at night when child is
sleep. Dose not interfere with daily activities. Less chance of tube coming out.
Disadvantages of GT Infected . Lack. Irritated. Malfunctioning.
Gastrostomy CarePURPOSES :
1.Promote healing and prevent skin breakdown.
2.Provide comfort.3.Teach child/parent self care.
Equipments
Procedure of GT Care
1. Introduce your self .2. Prepare equipment .3. Explain procedure to the child and
his parent4. Maintain privacy.5. Put on non sterile gloves .6. Assess the child into comfortable
supine position.
Procedure of GT Care Cont ’
7. Remove old dressing and discard in appropriate waste container.
8. Pour normal saline for newly placed tube into a medicine cup , wash around stoma; use betadine for healed site.
9. If the skin become red, irritated, clean site with hydrogen peroxide.
Procedure of GT Care Cont ’
10.Rinse insertion site with sterile solution (saline) and gauze.
11.Dry insertion site with gauze.12.Apply skin barrier or antibiotic
ointment around site.13.Apply dressing around and secure
loosely with tape.

14. Secure tube to skin on abdomen at another site with tape.
15. Discard used supplies.16. Keep child in comfortable position.17. Wash hand .18. Document the procedures.
