Interview with Soham Basu [AIR 10, CH GATE 2015]

1. How was the GATE Paper this year? Give us some insight into the GATE 2015 Question Paper.

Soham Basu: In a nutshell, the GATE 2015 (Chemical Engineering) paper was quite difficult, especially after considering the difficulty level of the previous year. There were more numerical – type questions and overall, the conceptual (rather than plain formulaic) proficiency was tested to a far greater extent. The questions on chem. engg. thermodynamics and process control, specifically, were very challenging

2. What do you think is the reason of your success in GATE Exam?

Soham Basu: I concentrated singularly on clearing my concepts in the lead-up to GATE. Periodic revision of important formulae and group discussion of important concepts also helped. Above all, I had enrolled for a GATE classroom coaching course, the notes and explanations provided by them were simply outstanding.

3. What suggestions and tips would you like to give to students who are preparing for GATE exam?

Soham Basu: I would say from my own experience that cracking GATE is not a very difficult proposition if you get your concepts right. Try to have a brief sketch of the derivation, or at least the generating equations of the formulae that you commit to your memory. Have faith in your abilities and do not panic if the paper turns out to be tougher than you expected.
