NAME BADGE What a month to be present at the club meeting and wearing their badge! After 24 years of belonging to the
Summer is over, and as we approach Fall, more Vette Set activities loom on the horizon. How lucky we are to live in Southern California and get to enjoy our Corvettes all year. This year we've had a couple long runs under our belt (Colorado and Kentucky-Tennessee) and two to follow (Oregon and New Mexico). Great opportunities to experience your Corvette, see some beautiful country, and enjoy time with friends.
Other upcoming events include a run to Edwards Air Force Base Museum, our annual Holiday Party, and a Car Cruise and Show for Vets.
All of these events are made possible by members stepping up to organize them. At our last membership meeting I asked for volunteers to assist in planning our Awards Banquet. I divided the job up to make it easier. When I asked for hands, after a long pause, three people volunteered- but they are all already serving the Club in another capacity! Believe me, I'm was happy to get their response, but I was hoping to see some new faces on the committee.
I know the majority of you are reluctant to step up. You feel shy or inadequate to fill a position. Or "you don't have the time." C'mon, we're practically all retired, with a lifetime of experience to offer! I held back my first four years in the club, but then I started to get more involved, feeling it wasn't fair to enjoy all the benefits of membership and letting others do all the work. I soon found I was enjoying the Club even more, by

Skydome Ribbon Cutting, 1-Millionth Reveal It's official! A year and a half after a large sinkhole formed in the Skydome of the National Corvette Museum, the 13 story iconic landmark is back, better than ever, with all eight "sinkhole Corvettes" returned to display. Though the Skydome re-opened to visitors on July 6, a ceremonial ribbon cutting (or rather, caution tape cutting) was held as part of the Museum's 21st Anniversary Celebration.
After more than four months and 1,200 man-hours of painstaking craftsmanship by the GM team, the restoration of the milestone 1-Millionith Corvette is complete, and the car was unveiled in the Skydome following the ribbon cutting. Kimberlee A. Fast Pavilion Dedication A dedication ceremony was held at the newly constructed Kimberlee A. Fast Pavilion at the NCM Motorsports Park. last year at the Museum's 20th Anniversary Celebration it was announced that the Pavilion and Park's entry road would be named in remembrance of Kim.
"Kim attended most of the events at the NCM," said Chuck Fast, Kim's father. "We thought that she would really be proud to have the building named after her."
Kim was an avid racer, participating in many autocrossing and high speed events on road courses in the mid-west states. Chuck was joined by wife Sharon Fast, and Museum Executive Director Wendell Strode to unveil the plaque recognizing Kim.
George Person, Jr. Note: George received the following from Leslie Gardner regarding the passing of Corvette legend, Dick Guldstrand.
“Very sad news. The last time some of us saw Dick was at my LBGP West of the NCM Party a couple years ago. What a wonderful, kind and generous man he was. Dick lived his passion for many years. Lived life to the fullest to the very end. He was found next to his Gold Corvette in his garage last night. His Corvette took him to heaven.”

Corvette Hall of Famer Dick Guldstrand Passes The first "racer" to be inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame, Dick Guldstrand, passed away on September 2 at the age of 87.
Guldstrand played an enormous role in the development and testing of the 1985 Corvette. Well-known for his chassis expertise and success on road racing tracks since the 1960's, Guldstrand set the stage for future racing series, as well as Corvette's domination of Porsche cars for the first time in fifteen years. You can read more about Guldstrand's history on the NCM website.

Corvette Legend Dick Guldstrand Passes Away [By VR Staff on September 3, 2015]
“Sad news this morning as it was announced by the Guldstrand family that Corvette racing legend Dick Guldstrand has passed away at the age of 87.
During the 1950s, Guldstrand majored in Engineering at UCLA and began his racing career in Midget and Sprint cars in Southern California. By 1957, Guldstrand became enamored with the Chevrolet Corvette and began campaigning one in West Coast road races. Success quickly followed with Pacific Coast Championships in 1963, 1964 and 1965, as well as Guldstrand being named “Driver of the Year” by the Cal Club in 1964. Guldstrand would go on to win the GT division at the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona, as well as a trio of Trans-Am wins by 1968. Further, in 1968, Guldstrand opened his eponymous race shop Guldstrand Engineering, which since then has become synonymous with Corvettes and high performance.
Look for a more exhaustive tribute to Guldstrand’s career and impact in the November issue of Vintage Racecar. In the meantime, our thoughts and condolences go out to Guldstrand’s family and the large group of enthusiasts whose life he touched.”

The Vette Set, Inc. of Southern California was founded in Manhattan Beach, California at Champion Chevrolet. The Vette Set continues now sponsored by Win Chevrolet, Carson, California. Carson is also home to the Goodyear blimp, the “Spirit of American”, now retired, is to be replaced by a new dirigible in 2016.
The club was formed in March of 1965 and was comprised of approximately 20 members. The very first club run for the newly formed club was to Busch Gardens, then a big Southern California tourist attraction. Since then, our Corvettes have taken us to numerous points of interest in So. Calif. and well beyond. We have been active in the NCCC West Coast Regional Conventions, the Big Bear Bash (the largest Corvette event on the West Coast), the Gambler’s Classic, numerous West Coast Car Shows, and now have annual Corvette tours of many Western/mid-West states and their National Parks. This year’s highlight tour was our anniversary caravan to the National Corvette Museum. Please look at our web site www.thevetteset.com to get a full appreciation of us.
Today the club has 110 members. The officers of the club are; Jerry Clement-President, Chuck Hammer-Vice President, Anton Wigenayake-Secretary, George Berls-Treasurer, and Bruce Gaines-Sergeant-at-Arms.
To celebrate our 50th Anniversary this year, our NCCC Governor and recently appointed West Coast Region Secretary, Carl Cewinski, and his wife Karen, led nine of our Corvettes to Bowling Green, Kentucky to visit the National Corvette Museum, the Corvette assembly factory, and the Motorsports track facility. Along the route we traveled Route 66, taking in many historical sites. Several members that now live in Arizona, Colorado, and Tennessee joined us en route. In Texas, Marilyn Christian and several members of the Amarillo Corvette Club hosted us one evening, and accompanied us to the world-famous Big Texan Steak Ranch. Other adventures of the journey included cave exploration in Kentucky, Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis, and the notorious “Tail of the Dragon” in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, testing our Corvettes and drivers through 318 turns in only 11 miles.
The accompanying picture shows some of us at Ruby’s Diner in Redondo Beach, the location of our 40th Car Show. Our car shows are held nearly every year, and are our way of raising money for charity, as well as an opportunity to share our love of Corvettes with the public. This year we hosted an all GM Show, highlighting Corvettes. Over 170 cars participated, and the Corvettes were judged to NCCC Street Concourse rules. These shows are always well attended by the general public, and our club members go all out that day to ensure it is a success.
THE VETTE SET – at site of our 40th Annual Car Show, Redondo Beach, CA.
This year our charity recipient was the Southern California Regional Occupational Center, a local technical school that trains automotive mechanics. We gave over $7,000 to provide scholarships and equipment for the school. Additionally we held a NCM mini-store. The NCM provided all the merchandise from their store which we offered for sale. All proceeds from this store went to the NCM.
The Vette Set Caravaners – minus one car in repair (encounter with road gator)
The highlight of our trip of course was our destination in Bowling Green. We were graciously hosted by Stephanie Morrill at the Museum, recognizing our Anniversary, who arraigned a dedicated tour of the assembly plant. The NCM also arraigned for us to take some brisk parade laps at their new Motorsports Park, in our cars. The Museum treated us like royalty, going all out to make our visit especially memorable.

August was a slow month for activities. One reason is that members are preparing for the 12 day, “Oregon Trails” run led by Frank Tecca in September and the 9 day run to Albuquerque’s Balloon Festival in early October led by Charlie McManus.
A third reason is that this is “harvest time” for our activities director, Jennifer Walton, who has been busy playing her violin in summer concerts. For these reasons and the fact that it is the club’s 50th anniversary, a flashback from the much talked about trip to Buellton in the spring of 1994 is presented.
This year the theme was "M*A*S*H“ (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) and everyone dressed up in military outfits (except for Paul Benthuys and Jerry Hilty) who were dressed as nurses making this a two-Klinger event.

This looks like it could be a good weekend event for our club next spring. Since 1994, there are plenty of “new” motels in Buellton as well as neighboring Solvang. Also, there are a couple of “new” restaurants in Buellton: A J Spurs Saloon & Dining Hall, the Hitching Post and the Red Barn Steak House. In Solvang there are Danish restaurants as well as live theater in the outdoor Solvang Festival Theater. This weekender could include a trip to local wineries and the Cold Spring Tavern in San Marcos Pass. What’s not to like about a weekender that was the setting for the 2004 road trip movie to wine country called “Sideways”? Pat Cowley
