Dear Friends, It’s hard to believe that it’s time for a new school year. Our 2011-12 school year was monumental at Lift For Life Academy. All our students’ successes are possible only because of your kind support. Thank you- volunteers and supporters- very much for sharing so generously. I was profoundly moved by the Academy’s inaugural high school graduation as seniors proudly received their diplomas. These students overcame monumental challenges to make this “walk”. These bright youngsters are on their way to college and successful futures. All of our graduating seniors have been accepted into college, vocational training, or the military. Over 95% of our seniors graduated and received over $850,000 in scholarships. We worked hard this summer with our charter sponsor Southeast Missouri State University to ensure that our students succeed, test scores continue to increase, and students remain engaged in school. Dr. Katrice Noble has been promoted to Director of Academic and Student Programs. Mr. David LeMay is the new High School Principal and Ms. Cathy McGrath is our new Middle School Principal. As some of you may be aware, I retired from Lift For Life Gym to focus my attention on the Academy and our amazing students. I am looking forward to our new school year and seeing the tremendous difference we are making in the lives of our students. Thank you very much for all you do to help the students at Lift For Life Academy! Please let me know if you would like to visit the Academy and see how the Academy supports and encourages students to achieve academic excellence. Sincerely,

Marshall Cohen, Executive Director

Make this our best year yet!

CORRECTION Dr. John Samet has been a Clinical Instructor at Washington University Medical School. In our last Newsletter we incorrectly recognized him in the Volunteer section as a Professor at Washington University Medical School. We regret this error.

The Academy’s Lifting Science project addresses the problem of at-risk, low-income students often being left behind in securing scientific literacy. Recognizing that increas-ingly, applicants for the best employment opportunities will need a good grasp of science and technology, LFLA has undertaken increased efforts to make science meaningful to

our students. We extend our deepest gratitude to the following foundations and corporations for making this program possible. The Monsanto Fund provided a tremendous grant to help furnish two inquiry-based science labs and offer professional development to equip our science teachers with the knowledge and skills to bring relevance to the classroom and demonstrate how science is used every day. Through this grant, LFLA has entered into an extended relationship with Washington University-Institute for School Partnership to implement Professional Development training that is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of the Academy. Express Scripts made a substantial grant to purchase science modules for Middle School. The Full Option Science System (FOSS) is a research-based science program developed with support from the National Science Foundation to help develop excitement about learning science, which is crucial to the middle schoolers future. The Dana Brown Charitable Trust, U.S. Bank Trustee also made a very generous grant to complete the furnishing of the Academy’s inquiry-based science labs and purchase materials and tools to give students hands-on, inquiry based experiences. The overarching purpose of the Lifting Science Project is to increase students’ proficiencies and academic scores in the field of Science. It’s working! We are seeing progress in test scores. Thank you very much for this wonderful support.

4 Lift For Life Academy | Where Learning Comes Alive! Gazette | Summer 2012

To celebrate our students and supporters, on May 15, Lift For Life Academy took on the ambience of a New York Fashion Premier. A festive champagne reception welcomed guests prior to the runway show. Tweny-three Academy students, under the tutelage of Elizabeth Wagner and Laura Kathleen Planck, Season 9 Project Runway finalist and academy Fashion Design instructor, walked the runway to model their stunning designs. Extraordinary Academy supporters were recognized, then guests were treated to outstanding cuisine. WOW. Our wonderful guests helped us raise nearly $30,000 to complete the down payment for our dedicated 6th Grade Learning Center. Fabulous live auction items included a trip to California and behind the scenes tour of PIXAR studio, Laura Kathleen consultation, and rides for Valedictorian and Salutatorian from EXOTIC MOTORS. The evening was sponsored by Jeff Glik/Glik’s and Kuna Meats. Jeff Glik, Melanie Moon, and Laura Kathleen Planck were co-Chairs for the evening. Many thanks to Michael Drummond for emceeing the Fashion Show. Beautiful music during the event was provided by Just In Time band. Gina Wischmeyer received the John Mann Presidential Award for her innovative approach to education and many years of exceptional volunteerism both on the Board and mentoring and tutoring the students. Durb and Ellen Curlee received the Founders’ Award to recognize their longtime support. Their commitment to improving the lives of inner-city children is unwavering. Deb Patterson accepted the Lift For Life Academy Community Partner Award on behalf of Monsanto and the Monsanto Fund which are very generous supporters of the Academy’s science programs that help prepare students for higher education. Lift For Life Academy celebrates and thanks all of our tremendous guests, supporters and volunteers who made CELEBRATE SUCCESS a real “success” for the benefit of the students at the Academy. THANK YOU! If you missed this year’s fun, please join us next year.

This June, in-coming LFLA senior, Keith Harris, was one of 19 area students selected to participate in Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville School of Pharmacy Diversity Camp. Seventeen-year-old Keith plans to one day own a pharmaceutical business and sell his products worldwide. Keith moved a little closer to those aspirations when he attended SIUE’s School of Pharmacy Diversity Camp. Students participating in the camp learned about the history of pharmacy, non- traditional careers in the field, and took part in hands-on labs. Only students with at least a 3.0 grade point average are eligible to attend for Pharmacy Camp. The Camp is aimed at increasing interest and awareness of pharmacy as a career option among minority high school students.

Jordan Eisen turned 8 years old. Most kids can’t wait to receive the gifts that their friends bring to their birthday party. Jordan is not your typical kid, he learned that the Lift For Life Academy baseball team needed equipment so he asked his birthday guests to bring baseballs, bats, bases, gloves and batting helmets to donate to the LFLA baseball team. Grand Slam Jordan! Thanks for thinking of our kids!

Congratulations to Lift For Life Academy Book Battle team for reading 20 books.

Battle of the Books is a St. Louis-wide competition held at Pattonville Heights Middle School for students in 6-8th grade. This was the 6th year for the battle and 31 teams participated. LFLA has sent a team each year. Similar to a trivia night, teams are asked questions about the 20 books. They talk quietly amongst themselves about the answers and then write them down. At the end of a round, answers are taken to the judges and a new round begins. Denise Bogard is the team sponsor and special thank you to Mrs. Lindner for her help, Dr. Noble for her support, and Mrs. Sonntag for co-coaching and reading ALL the books!!
