GCSE Results, August 2016 Leigh Academies Trust celebrated a magnificent set of GCSE results this year. Against a backdrop of decline nationally, where scores tumbled again across the full range of subjects, LAT academies surged forward. Overall, 62% of pupils achieved the gold standard of A*-C in English and maths, compared to fewer than 60% of pupils nationally. In English, 81% of pupils achieved A*-C grades against just over 60% nationally. In maths, 66% of LAT pupils achieved A*-C versus 62% nationally. There were many more successes across the full range of subjects. Roughly one in five of our pupils achieved the English Baccalaureate. All academies attained a positive Progress 8 score and our overall Attainment 8 score exceeded the national average. We are especially delighted that The Leigh Academy, Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy and Mascalls Academy achieved the best headline scores in their histories, with 65%, 70% and 60% of pupils achieving A*-C in English and maths, respectively. At The Leigh UTC, half of the pupils achieved the same benchmark in the Academy’s first year of GCSE results, making it the highest-performing UTC nationally. Commenting on the GCSE results, Simon Beamish, Chief Executive of Leigh Academies Trust, said: "Our academies' results this year are simply stunning. Across the board and in a wide range of subjects, scores have risen, making this group of Year 11s the most successful on record. The high achievements of staff and students demonstrate the power of formal collaboration across one of the region's most successful multi- academy trusts. We look forward to welcoming many of our Year 11s back into one of our sixth forms in September."

Leigh Academies Trust operates six secondary academies. Five of these are non-selective high schools, surrounded by Kent grammars which admit the highest-attaining 30% of pupils at age eleven. We are proud of pupils’ achievements in all of our secondary academies, which are:

THE LEIGH ACADEMY

The Leigh Academy is delighted to announce its best-ever results, with 80% of students achieving a C grade or higher in English, 70% in maths and 65% of the Year 11 cohort securing a C grade or better in both of these essential subjects. These record-breaking results are testimony to the hard work and dedication of students and staff and the ongoing support of parents and carers. The Leigh is proud to celebrate this success with all stakeholders.

LONGFIELD ACADEMY

LONGFIELD ACADEMY This summer has seen yet another fantastic year for those students receiving GCSE results at Longfield Academy. We are very proud of the achievements of all of the young people who worked incredibly hard to achieve their potential. We are excited to report that 56% of our students achieved both English and mathematics. Across all subjects, the progress of students was impressive, with a positive Progress 8 score. We are particularly proud of our English and science results, with the majority of students achieving good grades and making excellent progress. Special mention should go to Salha Abdulgialil, who was awarded nine A* - A grades and one B; Eloise Cunnew, who was awarded five A* - A and 4 B; and James Wallis, who was awarded seven A* - A, one B and two C. Our students have cause to celebrate their success and know that these results were not luck, but the result of consistent hard work and commitment to their future. We look forward to welcoming many of them back to our successful post-16 programme. Alex O’Donnell, Principal of Longfield Academy, said: “Longfield Academy strives to support each and every one of its students to achieve beyond expectations and I am thrilled that so many have achieved that today. As an academy, we would like to thank our parents, who have been tireless in their support and encouragement of their children, and I would also like to thank our staff, who never fail to show determination and patience to ensure these students achieve what they are capable of - and more.”

The Leigh UTC is proud to announce its first set of results for Year 11 students.

Steve Leahey, Principal of The Leigh UTC, commented:

Mr Leahey continued:

“Excellent progress has been made by students from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as those with special educational needs. One of our core aims is to get more girls into engineering and IT. Our girls have excelled this year and will be future role models for those choosing STEM careers.

Following on from the excellent post-16 results last week, together with the large number of students being employed in jobs within engineering and IT or going to university, we are delighted. As this is our first year of results, it’s extremely impressive how the UTC is developing. We will be taking our first students from age 11 in September 2017.”

MASCALLS ACADEMY

Students and staff at Mascalls celebrate a year of extremely high results. We are delighted to report the strongest set of headline figures in the history of Mascalls Academy.

Principal, Wayne Barnett, said:

“We are extremely pleased to continue a trend of outstanding results. With 80% of our pupils achieving an A*-C grade in English, 74% of pupils achieving an A*-C grade in science and 63% of pupils achieving an A*-C grade in maths, our 60% combined figure of pupils achieving maths and English is the highest-ever result achieved by pupils at Mascalls Academy. These results are due to our supportive parents, remarkable teaching and continuous and sustained effort from our pupils.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each and every one of our pupils and staff on such an achievement.”

STATIONERS’ CROWN WOODS ACADEMY Stationers' Crown Woods Academy is celebrating its best-ever GCSE results, with a phenomenal 70% of students achieving A*-C grades in both English and mathematics, thus improving on its performance in 2015 and continuing a trend in which it has exceeded both local and national averages; an outstanding 85% of students achieved an A*-C grade in English and 73% in maths. Outgoing Principal, Michael Murphy, said: “Students have worked extremely hard and these excellent results are a tribute to their commitment and hard work. We would also like to thank the teachers, support staff and parents who have taught, supported, nurtured and encouraged our students throughout their school lives. These excellent results are the platform for students to continue their educational careers into the sixth form. Students have demonstrated a wealth of talent and proven academic ability. We are very excited about the next steps for these students and will continue to support them as they prepare for university and future success. WILMINGTON ACADEMY

WILMINGTON ACADEMY Principal of Wilmington, Tracey Trusler, had the following to say about the Academy’s results: “Students at Wilmington Academy performed exceptionally well in a wide range of subjects, bucking the national fall in GCSE results. 83% of students achieved an A*-C in English language and/or literature and over 80% of students achieved at least one A*-C in science, with similar stories of success in subjects such as IT, engineering and photography. 60% of students achieved A*-C grades in French, Spanish, religious studies, maths and history, with many achieving the top grades. A large proportion of the students are staying on into the sixth form at WIlmington, with the remainder securing places at college and apprenticeships. Congratulations to all staff and students, who have worked incredibly hard and deserve their success.”
