2.1 Wind Power Technology
A wind turbine is a device which converts kinetic energy from wind into electricity. Wind turbines
are also known as a wind generator, Wind Turbine Generator (WTG), wind power unit, wind energy
converter or an aero generator.
According to design, wind turbines are broadly classified into two types:
Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT)
Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT)
The HAWT is the most common and simplest type of wind turbine. Today, the majority of wind
turbines operate on a horizontal axis with three blades that are attached to a rotor from which the
electricity is transferred to a generator though a gearbox, both of which are contained in a nacelle.
Some turbines do not have gearboxes and transfer electricity directly to the generator. Electricity is
then transmitted to the transformer and fed into the grid through transmission lines, resulting in
efficient and cost-effective turbine technology.
The VAWT is not very popular due to its lower efficiency, making it largely sourced by individual
inventors. The technology arranges the main rotor shaft of turbines vertically. To date, the most
commonly used wind turbine for commercial purposes is the HAWT.
2.2 Wind Turbine Rotor Blade Technology
Rotor blades form a very important part of a wind turbine as they are the components that capture
wind power and cause the turbine to rotate. This rotational motion is then converted into electric
power.
The blades are fitted into a hub which is then fixed to the front of the nacelle of the WTG. The
length of each blade is considered the radius of the rotor of the WTG. The rotor diameter, which is
about twice the length of the rotor blade, is a very important factor and greatly affects overall
efficiency of the turbine.

Rotor blades that are made of a composite of fiber glass and polyester resins within a PVC
sandwich is the most common type of blade currently manufactured. The price of a set of such
rotor blades is estimated as being XX% of the total price of the turbine. It is very important for the
WTG manufacturer to choose the optimum length of the blade, considering the marginal increase
in output power for the marginal increase in rotor diameter. For a turbine of a certain power rating,
as the blade length increases beyond a point the marginal power (extra power) decreases. This is
how the optimum rotor diameter for a particular turbine is determined (EWEA, 2009).
