KIA CANADA SURPRISES MONTREAL AUTOSHOW WITH TRACK’STER CONCEPT VEHICLE

CANADIAN DEBUT OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE SOUL-BASED CONCEPTAGGRESSIVE DESIGN, ALL-WHEEL DRIVE AND 250 HORSEPOWER MAKE FOR A WEEKEND DRIVER’S DREAM

Kia Canada Inc. took thewraps off of the track-inspired Track’ster

concept vehicle for its Canadianpremier at the Montreal AutoShow – a region which has astrong automotive enthusiastfollowing. The performance-oriented three-door Soul coupeconcept hints at what couldpossibly be the future designlanguage of Kia’s popular SoulUrban Utility Vehicle, a redesignto be launched later this year.

“The idea was to make theTrack’ster tough looking, like abulldog,” explained Tom Kearns,chief designer for Kia MotorsAmerica, leading the charge forthe concept’s development. “Butthe car had to be approachableas well. We wanted to base thecar in reality so people instantlyknew it was a Soul, but with a lotof attitude. It had to be a boldinterpretation that would changepeople’s conceptions of what asporty Kia Soul could be.”

Striking Exterior Design: TheTrack’ster displays an energizedattitude, beginning with its eye-catching Whiteout and InfernoOrange exterior paint. Theorange paint acts as a contraston the white, accentuating thesportiness of the Track’ster asthe shadows of the white paintdraw out the aggressive natureof the concept. Lightweightcarbon fibre surrounds Kia’ssignature grille, incorporating

yet another aspect directlyrelated to racing into the exteriorappeal. Integrated headlights,featuring compelling LEDspronounce the race presencestrongly from the front, as do thebillet aluminum surrounded LEDround fog lights, which play offthe trapezoidal features foundthroughout the concept.Embraced between the fog lightsis an oversized lower intake grille,capable of cooling the engine bayeven under the most gruelingdriving conditions. The menacingfront end is completed with alower valance, trimmed in carbon

fibre and Inferno Orange paint,riding just inches off the ground.Aggressive front fender flareswith custom HRE-K1 monoblockbillet performance wheels tuckedbeneath each corner. The wheels arewrapped in 245/40-19-inch front andmassive 285/35-19-inch rear MichelinPilot Sport PS2 high-performancetires. The wheelbase on theconcept is stretched to 2,570 mm,20 mm more than the productionSoul. As expected on a vehiclewith the Track'ster's performanceintentions, large 355 mm Brembovented and cross-drilled disc brakesare embraced by six-piston calipers

in the front and 345 mm discs arepaired with four-piston calipers at therear.

The Soul’s iconic angled roofcarries forward on the Track’ster,however, on closer inspection Soulfans will notice that the concept hasgone way with the rear doors. Thefront doors have been extended anddecked with billet push-stylehandles, echoing the other billetaluminum finishes on the exterior.Similar in style to the lower frontvalance with Inferno Orangeaccenting, carbon fibre lower sidevalances incorporate functionalrear-brake cooling ducts.

While care for the caregiversis difficult to find, a new studyout of UCLA suggests that usingyoga to engage in very brief,simple daily meditation can leadto improved cognitivefunctioning and lower levels ofdepression for caregivers.

Dr. Helen Lavretsky,professor of psychiatry at theUCLA Semel Institute forNeuroscience and HumanBehavior, and colleagues reporta further benefit as well: areduction in stress-inducedcellular aging.

"We know that chronicstress places caregivers at ahigher risk for developingdepression," said Lavretsky, whoalso directs UCLA's Late-LifeDepression, Stress and WellnessResearch Program.

"On average, the incidenceand prevalence of clinicaldepression in family dementiacaregivers approaches 50 percent. Caregivers are also twiceas likely to report high levels ofemotional distress."

What's more, manycaregivers tend to be olderthemselves, leading to whatLavretsky calls an "impairedresilience" to stress and anincreased rate of cardiovasculardisease and mortality.

While medication canimprove depression, many

caregivers may be opposed to theuse of medication because of theassociated cost and drug side-effects. That considerationmotivated Lavretsky and her

colleagues to test a brief mind-body intervention for stressreduction. The researchersrecruited 49 family caregiverswho were taking care of theirrelatives with dementia. Theirages ranged from 45 to 91 yearsold and included 36 adultchildren and 13 spouses. Theparticipants were randomizedinto two groups.

The meditation group wastaught a brief, 12-minute yogicpractice that included an ancientchanting meditation, Kirtan

Kriya, which was performedevery day at the same time foreight weeks. The other groupwas asked to relax in a quietplace with their eyes closed

while listening to instrumentalmusic on a relaxation CD, alsofor 12 minutes every day at thesame time for eight weeks.

At the end of the eightweeks the researchers found thatthe meditation group showedsignificantly lower levels ofdepressive symptoms andgreater improvement in mentalhealth and cognitive functioning,compared with the relaxationgroup. In the meditation group,65 per cent showed a 50 per centimprovement on a depression

rating scale, and 52 per cent ofthe group showed a 50 per centimprovement on a mental healthscore. This compared to a 31 percent depression improvementand a 19 per cent mental healthimprovement for the relaxationgroup. The researchers alsofound that meditation increasedtelomerase activity and thusslowed cellular aging.

All-new 2014 Forte sedan: The 2014 Forte arrives with a boldnew style, a host of features and a new powertrain line-up that cometogether to complete a well-rounded package.

Designed to Impress: Beginning with the 2014 Forte’s prominent,eye-catching wide-body design, the vehicle extends longer, widerand lower than the outgoing model with the wheels dramaticallyplaced on the outside corners, increasing the wheelbase. The sleekhood line flows elegantly down to the latest iteration of Kia’ssignature grille, flanked with available distinctive LED positioninglights and unique available high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights.Along the sides, the new Forte sedan displays what Peter Schreyer,President of Hyundai, Kia Design Center, calls “dynamicmuscularity”. You can see it clearly in the wind-swept roofline and

the strong character lines that flow along the doors of this excitingnew generation of Forte. The all-new Forte will be offered with 15-inch steel wheels on the base trim, and available 16-inch and machine-finished 17-inch alloy wheels on higher trims, each accentuating theexterior lines of the vehicle differently. Wraparound, multi-dimensional available LED frosted taillights characterize the Fortesedan’s new style, while the aerodynamically designed trunk deliverssporty sophistication.

All-new Powertrain: The Forte sedan’s sporty and elegantstyling is matched by its performance. Two new engines are availablefor the 2014 model year: a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine rated at 148-horsepower, available with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatictransmission, and a 2.0-litre Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engineproducing 173-horsepower, available with a six-speed Steptronicautomatic transmission. The 2.0-litre GDI engine will offer availablesteering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.
