LOS ANGELES —Summer television used to meanreruns. This year it’s gone to thedogs.
Several new shows stardogs and their owners in need ofhelp. CBS has the lone networkshow in “Dogs in the City,” star-ring comic, dog trainer andbusinessman Justin Silver. It’sjoined by documentaries onPBS and HBO and a series inthe works for the DisneyChannel, among others.
Each Wednesday at 8 p.m.,Silver is trying to help houndand human tackle unsettlingproblems like joint custody afterdivorce or dealing with signifi-cant others who just moved in.
Is man or mutt usually toblame for problems? It’s 50-50,he said, but “a dog’s behavior isshaped by the people in its life.”
Silver says he won’t be theone solving problems, eventhough he jokes that he speaksdog. Instead he will providetechniques and experiences soowners can fix their own prob-lems.
“It’s that old adage: Give aman a fish and you’ll fill his bel-ly. Teach him how to fish andhe’ll never starve. I am teachingyou how to fish. But no onelearns how to fish perfectly inone hour. It takes constant prac-tice.”
If intervention is needed,he will call on his own pit bulls,Chiquita and Pacino. “I use mydogs as much as possible
because the thing that influencesdogs most is other balanceddogs,” he said.
“Dogs in the City” seems tohave a lot in common with “TheDog Whisperer with CesarMillan” on the NationalGeographic Channel and “It’sMe or the Dog” with VictoriaStilwell on Animal Planet. “BadDog!” is another Animal Planetshow, although it uses videotapeto capture misbehavior in a test
of sorts to see how far an owner’slove will stretch.
Documentaries airing inMay and June explore therewards and redemption of shel-ter dogs. The American Societyfor the Prevention of Cruelty toAnimals says between 5 millionand 7 million companion ani-mals enter shelters every yearand between 3 million and 4million of them are euthanized.
“Shelter Me,” a PBS docu-
mentary, is narrated by actressKatherine Heigl and is spon-sored by the pet food companyco-owned by Ellen DeGeneres.
It follows an animal controlofficer, adoption workers, femaleinmates who train rescue dogs, and vets who acquire formershelter dogs.
“‘Shelter Me’ is about thelives that are changed whenshelter pets are given a secondchance,” Heigl said.
Andrew J. Trotto, an Armyveteran from Mission Viejo, wasteamed up with Teka, a blackLab rescued from a Wyomingshelter by Freedom ServiceDogs in Englewood, Colo.
“If it wasn’t for her, I’d bedead right now,” Trotto says inthe film.
“I was an evil person. I hat-ed you or wanted to kill you,” hesaid, describing the PTSDdemons that haunted him.
“People say suicide is selfish. Butwhen you are in the zone, you’renot thinking about that. Theterror in your head drives youinsane. She (Teka) will wake meup out of my night terrors.”
“Shelter Me” will air acrossthe country in late May andJune.
HBO will premiere a docu-mentary called “One NationUnder Dog: Stories of Fear,Loss & Betrayal” on June 18 at 9p.m.
The film looks at America’sobsession with dogs, how farindividuals will go for their petsand what it will take for peopleacross the country to treat alldogs humanely.
The 73-minute documen-tary looks at the odds stackedagainst shelter dogs, spay andneuter education, puppy mills, dog bite victims and how someowners respond when their dogattacks.
The Disney Channel alsohas a new dog show in the worksfor the fall and while it doesinvolve a rescue dog, that’swhere reality ends.
The live-action, multi-camera series called “Dog WithA Blog” and revolves around adog named Stan (who is really a4-year-old named Kuma).
In real life, Kuma is a husky, golden retriever and border col-lie mix who was rescued from ashelter. In the show, he is adopt-ed to tame a pair of feudingstepbrothers. Turns out Stan canread, write and blog.

Annie-scessIn medicine there’s the usual and
the unusual. And then there’s the
usual-that-turns-into-the-unusual,
such as with our Annie. A not so
svelte Siamese, she came in for
what looked like a typical cat fight
abscess (from a newly arrived feral
cat). So we sedated her, placed
a drain and started on antibiotics
- standard protocol that works in
99% of the cases. However, Annie
decided this was not going to be
good enough.
The abscess got a little better, but
just never resolved the way these
things should do - and she was
starting to feelworse (andgrumpier)
as time went on. Even after opening
it up again and trying to get it under
control, it just would not clear up.
At that point we ran a culture and
found an extremely resistant couple
of bacteria which would only
respond to very aggressive surgery,
and an antibiotic only available to
human oncology patients!
With some help from some
pharmacy contacts, board certified
surgeons and Sammie’s Friends,
we took her to surgery to take out
a lot of her back skin and muscle,
and most of the infection. She still
has some tubes sticking out of
her back but she is looking better;
without her dedicated mom and a
group of pet advocates she would
not be around to be grumpy to us.
