provided the perfect venue for John A. Logan College employees to gather and celebrate “the most wonderful time of the year.” President Mike Dreith hosted an open house for employees and the board of trustees at the Centre on December 6, providing an early opportunity for holiday socializing prior to the flurry of final exams and increasingly conflicted holiday schedules. Over 350 people enjoyed refreshments, fellowship, and keyboard entertainment by JALC’s own Ron Sumner (pictured left).

Through the creative efforts of employees Robin Egelston and Steve McLaughlin, a picturesque view of the Harrison/Bruce Historical Village also graced the cover of the College’s 2012 Christmas card (above). The Village was dedicated in April 2012, and is available for free walking tours conducted by volunteer docents during designated public tour hours. Dear Colleagues and Friends:

Strategic Planning Consultant Tom Wunderle has a line he likes to deliver when looking at data gleaned from hundreds of surveys that preceded the kick-off of our eight-month strategic effort.

“We are trying to move from good-to-great,” Wunderle says when he peers at the numbers. “And from less-than fantastic to good.”

In other words, we always need to seek improvement in our lives and in our organization. Continuous improvement is at the heart of the Higher Learning Commission’s new approach to accreditation and John A. Logan College is getting ahead of the curve through our strategic planning process.

There’s always space for improvement. One area that demands our attention is completion. It is called “student success” in

most quarters. The whole topic has become an obsession in higher education and in most statehouses. It has spawned new mission statements and forced college educators to look

closely at the impediments faced by our students as they struggle to complete their certificates and degrees. One community college has earned the distinction of the shortest vision statement in the state. JALC’s vision statement is

concisely stated on the wall at our main entrance: “Learning for Life.” William Rainey Harper College boasts the world’s most succinct mission:“Finish.”The challenge to finish is a daunting one for our students…and we must all focus on aiding them in accomplishing their task.

We must rid our college of issues that impede success and raise expectations for the people we serve. And speaking of service-----the word has been used extensively as faculty, staff and students were asked to consider the core

values of JALC. When the results of the surveys are completed and published, I believe we will see the word “Service” become one of the top four or five values held dear by the stakeholders of the College.

My wife Carol and I have enjoyed the fall season back in Southern Illinois by attending volleyball and basketball games at home and away. We have been simply thrilled to participate in the rich musical and theatrical productions offered in O’Neil Auditorium and look forward to the spring productions.

Most of all, we enjoy our interactions with the people of John A. Logan. Let’s commit ourselves to moving the college from “great….to simply, the best.”

….because we can.

Mike Dreith, Ed.D. President

Les McCollum Room DedicatedFamily, friends and former colleagues of the late Les McCollum

gathered at John A. Logan College on December 5 to honor his memory and his service to education and the community. The former Terrace Dining Room, a highly visible meeting/dining room, was formally dedicated as the Les McCollum Room. A well-known and respected educator and politician, McCollum served on the John A. Logan College Board of Trustees from l991 to 2005. During his tenure he served as board chair, board vice-chair and was active on many board committees.

John A. Logan College Trustees Don Brewer and Jake Rendleman shared memories of their colleague and friend, along with former state senator Larry Woolard who called McCollum one of his political mentors. Herrin Mayor Vic Ritter and City Clerk Marlene Simpson spoke highly of Les McCollum and brought with them a city document proclaiming Tuesday, Dec. 4 as Les McCollum Day in the city. McCollum’s daughters, Stephanie McCollum Tetzloff and Denise McCollum shared memories of their father and expressed their appreciation to College officials for honoring him in this manner.

Stephanie McCollum Tetzloff (left) of Marion and Denise McCollum of Carbondale are pictured alongside a plaque of their father, Les McCollum, at the dedication of the room now bearing his name.

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT BUILDS PLAYHOUSE FOR CASAThe John A. Logan College Construction Management program continued its tradition this year of building a playhouse for the Williamson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) fundraiser. The playhouse will be on display at the Marion mall through Saturday, December 22.  A total of six child-sized playhouses designed and built by students from six Williamson County schools and a dog house donated by Marion Regional Humane Society are on display and will be raffled to benefit CASA. Construction Management instructor Mike DeMattei reports this is the thirteenth year the JALC program has participated. The previous twelve years have helped raise over $285,000.

TURKEY SWIM/STRUT WINNERS By Deana Smith

Three John A. Logan College staff members finished in the top five of the annual Community Health Education Complex Turkey Swim/Strut held each November:

2nd Place - Julie Strauss – 433 laps (27.06 miles) 3rd Place - Deana Smith – 246 laps (15.38 miles) 4th Place - Tina Cavanaugh – 236 laps (14.75 miles)

Coordinator Chris Georgantas notes, “Our annual Turkey event is a great two-week motivator for swimmers and strutters, and raises funds in a short time for a local organization in the community.   The success of the event is owed to generous patrons who donate the great prizes and the entry fee and then swim, strut and exercise for their health.”

This year’s fundraising recipient was This Able Veteran which trains and provides service dogs to support veterans with injuries resulting from their service.

A total of fifteen staff and patrons participating in this year’s event raised more than enough funds to purchase a dog crate and several blankets.

HINCKLEY TO LEAD THIRD SOUTH AMERICAN ADVENTURELife Science Professor Emeritus and term faculty member Nelda Hinckley is

preparing to lead the third South American Adventure to the Andean highlands in Ecuador January 3 through 11, 2013. The trip is open to students and community persons interested in natural history. Participants register for Biology 240.

Ecuador is no larger than Nevada, yet it has an extraordinary range of habitats within its boundaries. Hinckley says one of its most exciting regions is the Andes, containing over thirty volcanoes, paramo grassland, highland lakes, and mountain slopes with tracts of elfin, temperate, and sub-tropical forests. These areas are famous for superb birding and they have more species of frogs and orchids than any country in the world.

For many years, Professor Hinckley has coordinated short-term travel/study opportunities to places such as Ecuador, including Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, and Panama. For more information on these travel/study opportunities, contact Nelda Hinckley at 618-549-5588; 549-7335, ext. 8820; or [email protected].

JALC FOUNDATION AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS JAlc’S Gilbert Participates In Online Radio BroadcastJohn A. Logan College English instructor and poet, Ken “Fog” Gilbert, aka jacob erin-cilberto, joined poet Lynda Bullerwell in an on-line radio broadcast, Away With Words, aired live from New York on November 8. The show was presented and hosted by Victoria Valentine, a New York novelist, publisher and editor, and co-hosted by Jill Zell. Listeners were able to call in to the show and have interaction with the moderators and poets. In addition to discussions about writing poetry, the authors read some of their works. Gilbert read poems from his latest book, Used Lanterns, and his previous volume, An Abstract Waltz, published in February of 2010. Both books are available for purchase in the John A. Logan College Bookstore.

Marketing And community Relations Department ReorganizedThe Board of Trustees voted at its September meeting to approve reorganization of the College’s marketing and community relations functions. Marketing, media relations, and student recruitment have historically been in the Administrative Services Division of the College, while the Graphics Design Office and the webmaster have been part of the Instructional Services Division. The reorganization creates an Office of College Relations which will include the positions of the director of college relations (Steve O’Keefe), coordinator of student recruitment (Joe Hines); coordinator of media relations (John Homan); coordinator of visual media (Robin Egelston), webmaster (Phillip Lane); and secretary to the director of college relations (Suzanne Koechner). The change is effective January 1, 2013, and the department expects to move into newly remodeled space in March.

LOSA COMPLETES COLD WEATHER CLOTHING DRIVEThe Logan Operational Staff Association (LOSA) just completed its fall humanitarian project, Cold Weather Clothing Drive, on the

campus of John A. Logan College. This project was designed to collect new or gently used coats, hats, gloves, blankets, and pajamas for distribution to agencies in four of the counties the College serves – Franklin, Williamson, Perry, and Jackson.

Event organizer Judi Pastori said LOSA has a long history of sponsoring two humanitarian projects each year. In the LOSA constitution, one of the organization’s goals is “encouraging members to exercise their rights and privileges as citizens, and accept willingly leadership in civic affairs.” LOSA’s long history of sponsoring humanitarian projects speaks directly to civic leadership. “In the past some agencies that have benefited from our efforts include Create-A-Smile, GumDrops, Crayon Connection, American Cancer Society for breast cancer, Thanksgiving food drive, area women’s and homeless shelters, and advocacy centers,” she said.

John A. Logan College Leads the Illinois Home Performance Equipment Loan Program by Tim Gibson

At the beginning of the fall 2012 semester, a new statewide program called the Illinois Home Performance Equipment Loan Program (IHPELP), was quiet ly launche d from the JALC campus. Not only was the College instrumental in the design and development of the program, but we were the first community college in the state to sign on to it, and to implement it on their campus. The purpose of the program is to loan residential energy auditing equipment such as a blower door, thermal imaging camera, and combustion gas analyzer at no charge to individuals seeking to become energy auditors for the purpose of enhancing their skills.

The equipment loan prog ram w a s create d b y a n I l l i n o i s G re e n Economy Network (IGEN) workgroup led by JALC Sustainability Coordinator Tim Gibson. Program

guidelines allow participating colleges to use the equipment for classes when it’s not being loaned. Grant funding was used to purchase five sets of equipment and a website was developed: www.energyequipmentloan.org/index.php, where borrowers could find out about the program, apply for membership, and reserve use of the equipment. After launching at JALC in August, the program is now in place at Lewis and Clark CC, and Illinois Central CC. The remaining equipment will soon be going into service at two northern Illinois colleges.

The College continues to be a leader in the area of building science and home performance education and training. You can keep up with what we’re doing by going to the JALC Sustainability Center website: www.jalc.edu/green. If you’d like know how to save energy in your home, you may want to take a look at: www.illinoishomeperformance.org/.

Trustee Sanders Elected To National Post

John A. Logan College Board of Trustees member John Sanders was announced as the chair-elect of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) at the association’s annual conference in Boston in October. He will serve with ACCT Chairwoman Jean Torgeson of North Iowa Area Community College until October 2013 at which time he will assume the role of chairman.

Logan College, was the 2012 recipient of the Rosemary Berkel Crisp Award presented at the Women’s Health Conference held at John A. The recipient is a woman who is committed to healthy families and healthy communities and a woman who has contributed to the advancement or support of others or her community, through her volunteer efforts or personal contributions.  Michelle was nominated for the award and then selected by the RBC Foundation board through a blind selection process.  She was selected for her work with various drug coalition groups and for her years of dedication serving on boards for The H Group and Shawnee Health Services.  Michelle is a strong advocate for the integration of mental health services into primary health care and will continue to strive to make integrated services available in our region.

The Holiday HopChart-topping hits of the 1950s and 1960s were brought to life by the John A. Logan College Choral and Chamber Ensembles with a musical production of The Holiday Hop. The sold-out performances rocked O’Neil Auditorium on December 7 and 8. Music instructor Nathan Arnett wrote the script and directed the show. Over the past few years, Arnett has rotated popular themes during the holidays, alternating among a rock ‘n’ roll show, “A Dickens Dinner,” and a 1940s radio show – all proving to be very popular with audiences.
