The pair, who met in Lowden, have lived in that community all their married lives. Their wedding took place in Walla Walla’s Central Christian Church. Dennis was born to Joseph and Mary Dennis in Washington Territory a few months before it became a state. The family later moved to Oregon where he went to school in Umapine. After attending Walla Walla Business College, Dennis accepted a Civil Service appointment as a rural letter carrier in Lowden in 1914, remaining in that position until 1957 – a period of 43 years. Of Pioneer Stock Mrs. Dennis is the former Maude Goodman, daughter of Ira and De Etta Goodman, early pioneers who came to Walla Walla Valley in 1860. She started first grade in the city’s old Lincoln School and later attended Baker School. As a young woman she worked in the Pacific Telephone Office and where she eventually became supervisor. In 1914 she began working for Thompson and Crecelius at the Book Nook, continuing until her marriage. The Denis’ have two children, Lloyd Dennis of WallaWalla and Mrs. Harold Hendrickson of Washington, D.C., who with her husband, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, and children, bill and Shirley, are visiting here now. The other grandchildren are Carol Dennis of Portland, Diana Dennis of Pullman, and Michael Dennis, Walla Walla. Mrs Dennis’ sister is Mrs. Helen Vanderpool of Tacoma; her brother is Less Goodman of Walla Walla. Dennis’ brother, Dewey, resides in Touchet.

Active in Community The couple have taken an active role in Lowden community affairs. They have been particularly active (15 years) in 4-H Club leadership and still take an interest in the program. Mrs. Dennis is a past president and still a member of Lowden Study Club. He is active in the Walla Walla Letter Carriers Association and is secretary of Walla Walla Chapter 237 of the National Association of Retired Civil Employes. Mrs. Dennis is active in the auxiliaries of the groups. Cabinet-making has been Dennis’s chief hobby since retirement, but he also enjoys gardening. Mrs. Dennis likes needle work and shares her husband’s interest in gardening. A retired Richland farmer, Oston Vern Witherrite, 63, died last night at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital after being a patient there for a month. For the past nine years Mr. Witherrite had made his residence at 1619 W. Kenn. Ave., in Kennewick. He had come to Richland in 1924 at which time he began farming. She is also associated with a little magazine published there called "Tips". Miss Nelson has an unusually broad acquaintance in Washington and Oregon. She acquired her grade school education in old Richland, part of her high schooling in Kennewick; she was employed for a time as aircraft instrument mechanic in the Walla Walla air base; at Pasco she was attached to the U.S. employment office; her parents, who operate a restaurant in Weston, are Mr. and Mrs. George Dewey Nelson; she was born in Enterprise in 1920. She is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Witherite who were old-time wheat ranchers around Milton-Freewater. At Washington D.C. she was an UNRRA staff member, returning to her Weston home in 1846. Very shortly afterwards she went to Tokyo, and was home last fall for a brief stay. While home she promised the Rroving Reporter to contribute an occasional article on Japan, as an Eastern Oregonian might appraise it. Her first article deals mostly with her trip to Japan out of Seattle, beginning November 7, in the following words: By LaRayne Nelson At long last I have landed in Japan and what an awful 20 days aboard the ship. We arrived just in time to observe Thanksgiving Day there in Japan. Excitement and relief were the emotions I experienced when the good ship "Thistle" docked in Yokohama. Excitement because it is always exciting to land in a country as foreign as Japan, even if it was my second visit. Relief because the "Thistle" is not a "good" ship. There were some 300 dependents aboard, and close to 45 were department civilians - in which latter class I found myself. In November, the Pacific is anything but pacific and from the first day, as soon as hit high seas, we were in hectic rough weather. And sick! I hope never to see as many sick people again! Little kids were so very ill, and their mothers more so, if possible. . . The food was fair enough and served cafeteria style.

There were eight girls in my cabin, but some cabins had as many as 18 and 20. We sort of lived in each others hip pockets. Lounge facilities were inadequate, and in a state of constant bedlam. 20 days - we were on the ship 20 days, managing to land barely in time for Thanksgiving. The wives were met by their patiently waiting husbands, and we war department civilians by a bus from civilian personnel. (Hummm. there ought to be a moral to that somewhere!) It was during the drive from Yokohama to Tokyo in the bus that we had our first glimpse of Japan - the Japan of getas, kimonos, shrines, and politeness. Tiny infants nestled securely but uncomfortably on their mother's back. Great vacant areas, that had been buildings before the event of the B-29, spoke eloquently of death and hardships. During the drive we passed countless hovels that served as homes. Crumbling shacks that had no sign of lighting, heating, or water systems. There were several Shinto shrines built in the typical Japanese mode. Then, like coming from dark into light, we entered the American sector of occupied Tokyo, where our billets and office buildings are located. Here the streets are wide and paved, the buildings more modern that a person expects. Trees line the streets. In the midst of this modern setting one will see unmistakable signs of the "old" Japan. An ox drawn cart may drag by, preceded by the stoic, plodding owner - it all seems so incongruous with the modern setting It was in front of the Osaka hotel that I alighted from the bus. The doors opened and a pair of bellboys rushed out to take my bag. After completing the task of registering at the hotel, which is more complex than at a stateside hotel because of army red tape, I was escorted to my room. It was a nice room for three girls. "Hello-my roommaid." When I turned toward the door a smiling Japanese maid nodded quickly to me. Yes, I was back in Japan I knew for sure! Well, as the Japanese would say . . ENTERPRISE -- Lyal Lunn Witherrite, 57, a Imnaha farmer, who was working on upper Imnaha for Ernie coots, died Friday afternoon, June 21, from a heart attack. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Enterprise Christian church, with the Rev. John Sinclair officiating. Burial was in the Enterprise cemetery. he was born Feb 12, 1900 at Umapine, son of Harry and Edith Witherrite and had lived in Wallowa county since 1917. he had been farming on Imnaha several years. CHARLES 'CHUCK' BLAKEMAN, 27 Apr 1947; d. 19 Nov 1983. Notes for DOROTHY BRANSON: Dot was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Mohler, to Lester and Helen Branson. She was the youngest of four children. Dot married Charles (Chuck) Blakeman on April 27, 1947, in Craigmont. Chuck passed away Nov. 19, 1983. The couple spent the majority of their lives farming in the Craigmont area. Dot continued to live in Craigmont until 1997, when she moved to Lewiston. Aside from being a homemaker, she worked in a number of occupations throughout her lifetime. Those included bowling alley manager, cook, waitress, bartender, grocery store checker and school bus driver. Dot never knew a stranger and made friends everywhere she went. She had a smile and a quick joke for any of those who would listen. She had her own set of drums and played with a band on many occasions. Survivors include her children, sons, Ron and his wife Anita Blakeman of Kennewick, Wash.; Gary and his wife Shirley Blakeman of Nezperce; Ken and his wife Brenda Blakeman of Lewiston; daughters, Barbara and her husband Frank Moore of Eugene, Oregon; Judy and her husband Dallas Knowlton of Melrose, Idaho. She is also survived by three brothers, Veril and wife Maxine Branson; Orville (Buzz) and wife Patsy Branson; Dale and wife Gladys Branson, all of Lewiston. Dot always thought of her cousin, Bobbie Hartwig, as her little sister. Dot had 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Dot's life will take place at the Ketch Pen at the Lewiston Roundup Grounds on Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m. Guests are welcome to bring a salad. A private burial will follow. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Shriner's Children Hospital or the Craigmont Quick Response Unit. He was 65. Dr. Hoon, born June 3, 1903 at Stateline in Umatilla County OR was the son of Samuel and Bessie Hoon. A graduate of the class of 1923 at Walla Walla High School, he attended and graduated from Washington State College in 1928 with a degree of veterinary medicine. While at college he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was active on the WSC track squad in both high and low hurdles. After graduation he practiced veterinary medicine at Lewiston ID and Del Mar CA, and worked as an inspector for the Civilian Conservation Corps. At the onset of WWII, Hoon served overseas with the Army of Occupation. In June, Hoon retired from service as a Lt.Colonel. Since then he had been in the government meat inspection service at Nampa ID. He entered the Veterans Hospital here a month ago. Dr. Hoon was a member of the BPOE 1724 of Laguna Beach CA.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 pm at the DeWitt Chapel with Chaplain L.E. Cousins officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Mt. Memorial Gardens. Surviving Dr. Hoon are his sons, James Hoon of Edmonds WA, and Thomas Hoon of Spokane, and his mother Mrs. Bessie Hoon of Rte 1, Dayton, who is 86 years old and ironically, Dr. Hoon is the second of her family to die within a year. A sister, Mrs. Robert (Iris) West died in Spokane several months ago. Harold M. Hendricson, who served in the Mediterranean area," during World war 2, has received word from the war department which in effect asks whether he is dead or alive. "This office (that of the quartermaster general) is attempting to establish the identity of an unknown American deceased soldier whose remains have recently been disinterred in the Mediterranean area," the letter written January 7 stated. "An identification tag bearing the name Harold M. Hendricson, ASN 39385499 was found on these remains." The interesting point is that this was Hendricson’s serial number while in the army. As Hendricson reconstructed the probable origin of this incident at Wednesday Night’s meeting of the American Legion post here of which he is an officer, the "dog tags" found probably were those he had while he was an enlisted man but which he lost when as an officer he and his tank driver were forced to abandon their tank under heavy gunfire. It is his belief the dog tags, which were in a musette bag in the tank, were found by the Germans and were given one of their soldier-spies who had been dressed in an American uniform and sent into the territory held by allied forces and probably was killed and buried there. "Probably this occurred in an isolated area and the body only recently has been unearthed by the army’s graves registration service," Hendricson believes. In any event the Walla Wallan is very much alive. "Tom'' Snyder, 77, of Wallowa died Thursday May 16 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. A service will start at 11 a.m. Friday at Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston, Wash. Pastor Jim Barnes of the First Christian Church of Troy, Mont., will officiate. Burial will follow at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston. Mr. Snyder was born Jan. 30, 1925, at the mouth of Cottonwood Creek in Washington's Asotin County. He was born in the home of his grandmother, Jane Sturgill Snyder. He was the son of Thomas J. "Jeff'' and Ruby Graham Snyder. He graduated from Anatone High School in 1941 at the age of 16. He then began ranching on Rye Ridge, which is located near Paradise. He married Reta Mae Witherrite on May 27, 1948. They had two sons, Jack and Terry, and two daughters, Jean and Nancy. The children have fond memories of their early childhood growing up on Rye Ridge, according to family members. After 20 years of ranching Mr. Snyder left the ranch in the spring of 1963 when Deer Creek School consolidated with the Enterprise School District. They moved because the family would have to be separated if the children attended school in Enterprise. Mr. Snyder and his family moved to Kettle Falls, Wash., for a business venture. In 1964 they moved to Northport, Wash., where he worked for Van Stone mine near Northport. He was then hired by American Smelting and Refining Co. in Northport as the firm's maintenance foreman. He worked 23 years for the company and later worked at Black Cloud in Leadville, Colo., from 1971 to 1981. He then transferred to the company's mill in Troy, Mont., in April 1981. He lived in the town until his retirement in 1987. He moved back to Wallowa in October 1997. Mr. Snyder enjoyed family, friends, fishing, hunting, home mechanics, horse back riding, leather tooling, reading and recording his favorite musicians. A good neighbor policy was one of his character traits. He liked plowing out neighbors' driveways in the winter.

Survivors include his wife Reta of Wallowa; son, Timothy "Jack'' Snyder and his wife Jody of Joseph; son, Terry of Elko, Nev.; a daughter, Norma "Jean'' Snyder Puls and her husband Jerry of Spokane; a daughter, Nancy "Snyder'' Rolfsrud and her husband John of Keene, N.D.; a brother William "Bud'' Snyder and his wife Rita of Corvallis; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A sister Lillian Beach and a brother Frank R. Snyder died earlier.
