“The spirit of Rotary is not exclusive;
it expands. It is not local, it is univer-
sal. And so the wish to understand
and to be understood, the wish to see
the virtues rather than the faults in
others, the longing to find out what
we have in common rather than what
divides us—these can be widely
shared.”

(R. I. President 1956-57) in address to 1957
Rotary International Convention

This is the second version of June musings. I mistakenly thought I had saved the
original file and didn’t. If you don’t like what you read, the first one was much
better.
It sounds so trite but I can’t believe that I am writing my last musings as President. Not unhappy,
mind you, but just amazed at how fast the time has flown in the last 12 months.
As Past Presidents have mentioned to me, it does go by quickly during your term as President.
As I reflect upon the past year, I will draw upon Aristotle and his quote that, ―The whole is greater
than the sum of the parts.‖ Our collective achievements as a Club are noteworthy and, as Presi-
dent, I could see and appreciate the extent of many of the individual efforts that contributed to that
end.
It is impossible to recognize individuals here for their accomplishments on behalf of Rotary be-
cause I would inevitably be afraid I would exclude someone. Suffice it to say, it is humbling to
cycle through the role of President and I would encourage anyone who hasn’t to consider it. It
truly does become ―Service Above Self‖ but is also a learning opportunity in so many ways. Doing
so has afforded me the opportunity to see what goes on across so many constituencies that I could
not have appreciated before. To see the lives we touch locally and internationally through our
efforts is very humbling. Please don’t get any ideas about an encore performance, however.
One of my goals was to have our Club participate in an international project where we could
personally make an impact and see the tangible outcome of what we contributed. The solar panel
project in El Sauce, Nicaragua really afforded us the opportunity to make a lasting difference and
contribute to sustainable development while preserving cultural traditions. It was all about this
year’s RI theme of ―Building Communities, Bridging Continents.‖
Charlie Tyo’s hosting Sri Lankan DGE Gehan Siribaddana and his family was yet another way for
us to bring what we read about in The Rotarian magazine to life. We heard how the Rotary Foun-
dation made a difference in his country’s rebuilding of schools after the devastating 2004 tsunami.
It was, once again, an opportunity to see a tangible benefit of Rotary on an international stage.
The overwhelming need here and abroad remains but it is comforting to know that we have made
such an effort to further the main objective of Rotary: Service. Whether it is the international effort
to eradicate polio, the local contributions of the Good Neighbor Committee or support of GVRC,
we do a great job of covering many needs. It is my hope that we can continue to recruit and retain
engaged members. Everyone’s lives have grown so busy but many hands do make for light(er)
work.
As an aside, you sing really well and our meetings make for good fellowship and fun. Our reputa-
tion as a ―singing‖ club is well earned.
I leave you in good hands with Howard Stewart taking over the helm. I wish Howard and the
incoming Board very well in their endeavors.
