WORLDWIDE, we drink about 400 billion cups of coffee each

year – that’s about 12,000 cups per second.

Though Hawaii is the only U.S. state that grows coffee, the nation has

exported its own brand of coffee culture. Starbucks began as a single Seattle store in

1971 and now has nearly 20,000 locations in more than 60 countries.

In a $4 latte, coffee beans account for about 40 cents of the price.

Fine$

Fines (and there

were many) were

collected at Club

meetings from

everyone who was

celebrating a

birthday or anniversary in the month August

From the ABC’s of Rotary…

From the earliest days of Rotary, members

have been referred to each other on a first-

name basis. Since personal acquaintanceship

and friendship are cornerstones of Rotary, it

was natural that many Clubs adopted the prac-

tice of setting aside formal titles in

conversations among members.

to Mean

Genesee Valley Rotary Camp Visit on August 18

We arrived at camp after our club meeting. First stop was the nursing lodge where we all received

wrist bands as part of the security procedure and had Janet Green the nurse explain her role which is

not only dispensing the proper medications to about 95 of the campers but prior to camp accepting

and reviewing all the applications. We then proceeded to the swimming pool area and basketball

court and then the dinning hall where we met Mark VanDurme the assistant camp director. Mark has

been at camp for 40 years and he explained all the regulations that must be in place as far as a

safety plan and background checks on all personnel, a very daunting task. We hiked up to the arts

and crafts lodge where we met Brian Bartalo the Camp director. Our final hike was up a steep hill to

some of the camp sites used by the campers which were very Spartan (real camping). Our final stop

was the area we call special, which is for the more challenged campers, Wheelchairs, walkers, feed-

ing tubes, oxygen monitors, c-pap machines. This area has paved pathways for easier access by

wheelchairs. This year there were 25 campers in special with an equal number of counselors. This

year's theme was Winter Wonderland and we had 117 campers which is the most we have ever had

and on Saturday 13 graduated which is always a tearful occasion for both campers and staff.
