Genre-fying Your Library Tammy Burns Slide 2 Why? Students had difficulty finding their favorite books. What are they going to see in bookstores, as adults? What are they going to see in public libraries? Non-readers were overwhelmed. Had to find some way to spark their interest. Slide 3 How did it start? Developed the categories. Classic / Comparable Literary Merit Historical Sports Reality Chick-Lit Fantasy Sci-Fi Mystery Horror Manga Slide 4 How will we know where to shelve them all? You must come up with some way to identify the books upon check-in and adding to the circulation system. Some options include: Using genre stickers Using duct tape and electricians tape Typing in a code into the call number in circ system Typing in a note in the MARC records Creating sub-locations within the circulation system Slide 5 What did we do? Economical route Duct tape and electricians tape Clear tape to protect Creating sub-locations within the circulation system Slide 6 How do the kids find the sections? Economical route Scrapbooking Paper that coordinated with colors Typed up the categories and printed them off Slide 7 Classic - White Slide 8 Historical Dark Blue Slide 9 Sports Dark Green Slide 10 Reality - Yellow Slide 11 Chick-Lit - Purple Slide 12 Fantasy - Orange Slide 13 Sci-Fi Neon Green Slide 14 Mystery - Red Slide 15 Horror - Black Slide 16 Manga - Teal Slide 17 How do you decide where it should go? Look at the categories listed on the copyright page. Ask the kids that read the books. Be flexible and willing to change categories. Mistakes will be made, but it will be okay. We made stacks on the tables each table housed a genre. Do not be afraid to turn to the kids for help. They know the books. They want to help Expect chaos for 2-3 weeks at least. Map out which shelves will be used for each section Remember, mistakes will be made, but they can be fixed. Slide 20 Results Circulation increased We saw students we had never seen before. The kids LOVE it. The teachers LOVE it. Students are able to see it in manageable pieces now. We do still shelve things wrong occasionally we just fix it. Most importantly happy kids!
