The contractor is using a Cat 321CLCR excavator to assist withinstallation of the borings and concrete piers for the sound barrier wall.

The earthmoving on this project will total roughly 300,000 cu. yds.(228,000 cu m). Dirt has been hauled from the east side of I-575 to the west side to be used for fill and construction of the southbound entrance ramp.

op,” said GDOT Commissioner VanceC. Smith Jr., at the announcement ofthe contract. He also stated that it will“enhance the mobility of CherokeeCounty’s residents and contribute toall the area residents’ quality of life.”At the beginning of the project,

work consisted of the installation oforange barrier fences and erosion con-trol systems. Also completed by C.W.Matthews in February 2011 was theinstallation of a large concrete culvertwhich will carry a stream underneaththe relocated Rope Mill Road. DuringMarch 2011 the contractor continuedto work on the relocation of Rope MillRoad and construction of all fourramps. Also, clearing, grading andearthwork continue throughout theearly stages. Another feature of the project that is

currently underway is the constructionof the sound barrier wall which is ofmetal construction and will sit above aconcrete side barrier. The sound wallwith side barrier are located immedi-ately adjacent to the 12-ft. (3.6 m)shoulder of the interstate and have acombined height, on average, ofapproximately 14 ft. (4.3 m). According to Tal Harber, capital

projects manager, Public WorksDepartment, city of Woodstock, “Thesound barrier starts approximately 300feet south of Ridgewalk Parkway andextends about 5,000 feet south alongthe shoulder of the interstate all theway down to approximately 400 feetnorth of Towne Lake Parkway.” Construction of this wall will take

about six months. The contractor isusing a Cat 321C LCR excavator toassist with installation of the boringsand concrete piers for the sound barri-er wall. In April, construction began on an

MSE/retaining wall located uphill ofthe Deer Run play field. This wall isessential to the completion of severalother aspects of the project. “This wall must be constructed

before the southbound entrance rampcan be completed, must also be inplace for the sound barrier wall to pro-ceed through the area once it reachesthis point, and it must be built to com-plete the project beside the play field,”Harber elaborated. Also included in the contract is a

new overpass bridge that will be con-structed parallel and on the same loca-tion as the one it will replace. Thestructure will be a traditional concrete

girder bridge with two spans and aconcrete deck. The north span will bebuilt first then traffic will be trans-ferred to it so that the old span can beremoved. The same process will occurwith the second span. The contractorplans on bringing in 100 to 110-ton(90 to 99 t) cranes for pile driving anderecting girders during construction ofthe bridge. The earthmoving on this project

will total roughly 300,000 cu. yds.(228,000 cu m). Dirt has been hauledfrom the east side of I-575 to the westside to be used for fill and constructionof the southbound entrance ramp. “This site was planned and permit-

ted by C.W. Matthews as a dirt borrowsite,” explained Harber, “since thisproject was ‘dirt poor’ for all of thenecessary filling for the project.” It is estimated that 50,000 cu. yds.

(38,000 cu m) of dirt had to be broughtin to the project site from the borrowsite. Once the project is finished, theborrow site will be re-stabilized andvegetated. A few of the many pieces ofequipment on hand for earthmovinginclude a Komatsu PC400 LC crawlerexcavator, a Komatsu 250 loader, aCat D4 dozer, a Komatsu dozer, andsome Cat 740 articulated dump trucks. As of the end of June, the contractor

continues to make progress on theproject. The sound barrier wall piershave been installed about halfway tothe northern end of the wall.Construction of the wall itself isexpected to begin soon. The fill andgrading process for the northboundentrance ramp continue. Lastly, grad-ed aggregate base surface has beenplaced on Rope Mill Road; this willminimize soil erosion and provide abetter driving surface for the remain-der of the construction. Harber’s employer, the city of

Woodstock, sponsors the project butdoes not provide construction or man-agement services. He describes thecity’s role as an “advocate” helpingout with issues such as right-of-wayacquisitions and providing engineer-ing and design guidance. As a result,he has worked closely with C.W.Matthews. “We are proud to have them as a

contractor on this project,” Harbersaid. “They have been very accommo-dating.”
