Georgia O’Keeffe
Early Life.
Georgia Totto O’Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887.
She lived in a house near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. In the
fall of 1908 she decided to forget about her dream of
becoming an artist , because she thought she would
never make it. Early in 1916 her charcoal drawings were
discovered by Alfred Stieglitz a photographer for a
company called 291. He invited her to move to New York
and devote all her time to her work. She accepted the
invitation and in the year 1924 Georgia O’Keeffe and
Alfred Stieglitz were married.
In 1972 , Georgia's eyesight began to fail her. She stopped oil
painting in 1972 , but she still worked with charcoal and
pencil until 1984. In 1976 , she wrote a book about her life
and her artwork , and she allowed a movie to be made about
it in 1977. On January 10 , 1977, President Gerald R. Ford
presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom , the
highest honor that can be awarded to any American citizen.
Also , in 1985 she was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
Georgia moved to Santé Fe in 1984 , where she died on March

were scattered at the top of Pedernal Mountain.
