2 Functional Description

2.1 Introduction

GeoS-5® RTK UHF Evaluation Kit (EVK) is designed to evaluate performance and functional capabilities of L1 GLONASS/GPS module GeoS-5® RTK. Integrated short-range UHF 433 MHz radio allows user to arrange wireless RTK system with baseline up to one kilometer.

2.2 Kit Contents

Evaluation Kit includes the following components:

1. GeoS-5® RTK UHF Evaluation Block;

2. GeoSDemo5® Demo SW; can be downloaded at http://geostar-navi.com;

3. GPS/GLONASS active antenna, 5-meter RF cable;

4. UHF 433 MHz antenna;

5. USB type A to USB-mini cable, 1 meter.

2.3 GeoS-5 RTK® UHF EVB

2.3.1 Block Diagram

The module comprises following major elements (Figure 1):

GeoS-5 RTK® GNSS module;

433 MHz UHF radio;

DC-DC converter: 5.0V3.3V;

Dual USB-UART converter;

Two multiplexers for direct access to the radio in test and production mode;

Buffer elements;

Backup battery;

Power switch;

Reset button;

GNSS antenna RF connector;

UHF antenna RF connector;

Mini-USB connector;

Auxiliary IO connector;

LED indicators.

2.3.2 Power

EVB is USB bus powered device. EVB takes 5.0V USB bus voltage and produces 3.3V secondary voltage by using DC-DC converters.

As EVB peak current consumption can exceed 100 mA (typical USB input current), EVB’s USB converter is programmed as high-power device i.e. requires USB port to source 500 mA current. If the port is unable to provide this requirement, it’s recommended to use USB-hub with external power capability

5.0V primary voltage comes to 5.0V3.3V DC-DC converter which output voltage directly goes to USB—UART converter and power switch. Power switch controls power of GNSS module, UHF radio and other EVB components.

Active antenna bias voltage is provided by GeoS-5 RTK® at antenna connector central pin. Antenna current is limited to 50 mA.

Built-in coin battery (CR2032) provides backup supply voltage.

2.3.3 Organization of the Serial Ports

Communication with GeoS-5 RTK® module can be accomplished in two ways:

By using USB port. Dual USB—UART converter FT2232 (FTDI) is utilized as a bridge between USB bus and serial ports of GNSS module;

By using Tx0/Rx0, Tx1/Rx1 signals of GeoS-5 RTK® available in 20-pin AUX connector.

Simultaneous use of USB and serial ports signals is not acceptable

2.3.4 Serial Port Default Settings

On default, serial ports of GNSS module are active and set to the following configuration:

Baud rate, bit/s: Port #0 – 115200, Port #1 – 9600;

Stop bits: 1;

Parity: none.

The Port #0 operates in binary protocol, the Port #1 – in NMEA and RTCM protocols.

Setting Port #1 baud rate other than 9600 bit/s could fail communication between GNSS module and UHF radio which could lead to data loss in wireless channel

2.3.5 Connectors

GNSS: GNSS antenna port. Type: SMA female. GNSS module provides antenna bias voltage at the central pin of this connector.

UHF: UHF 433 MHz antenna port. Type: SMA female.

USB: USB 2.0. Type: mini-USB.

AUX: auxiliary I/O connector for direct access to the signals of GeoS-5 RTK® and UHF radio. Type: 20-pin, two-row, 2.0mm pitch connector.

2.3.6 Switches, Push Buttons

POWER: power control switch. EVB is on if the switch is turned ON. EVB is off if the switch is turned OFF;

RESET: reset pushbutton. GeoS-5 RTK® module turns to reset state if the button is pressed.

2.3.7 LED Indicators

The front panel has four LED indicators:

Tx1, Rx1: Port #1 transmit and receive data.

a. Base station: Tx1 is blinking if GeoS-5 RTK® outputs differential corrections, Rx1 not active;

b. Rover: Tx1 is blinking if GeoS-5 RTK® outputs NMEA messages, Rx1 is blinking during reception of differential corrections data;

UHF: UHF radio status indicator. Indicator behavior:

a. Continuously lighting up if the radio could not detect carrier (Rover);

b. Blinking during data transmission (Base station) or during data reception (Rover).

STATUS: represents behavior of the STATUS signal of GeoS-5 RTK® module. Indicates status of the GNSS module – SEARCH, NAV_SINGLE, NAV_FIXED, FAILURE (refer to Figure 2 for timing diagrams):

a. SEARCH: hardware is OK (no failures found), module is searching for satellites, no fix;

b. NAV_SINGLE: satellites have been acquired and being tracked, valid position fix is available, solution type – standard accuracy (Base station/Rover) or RTK float (Rover);

c. NAV_FIXED: satellites have been acquired and being tracked, valid position fix is available, solution type – RTK fixed (Rover only);

d. FAILURE: hardware failure found, no fix.

2.3.8 AUX Connector

AUX connector allows user to get direct access to the signals of GeoS-5 RTK® and UHF radio. Table 1 presents connector pin list.

Mated part: female IDC-20F.

2.3.10 Default Configuration

On default, EVB’s UHF radio is configured in following way:

Base station: the radio is configured to transmit data; EVB is marked as (B), refer to Figure 5;

Rover: the radio is configured to receive data; EVB is marked as (R), refer to Figure 5.

For correct operation of RTK system comprising two EVBs, it is necessary to configure the EVB marked as (B) to work as Base station (refer to section 3.4). Default EVB configuration is Rover

3 Using EVK

3.1 Demo Software Installation

PC based demo software GeoSDemo5® is user-friendly Windows™ application that can be downloaded at http://geostar-navi.com/. The software provides an easy way to evaluate GeoS-5 RTK® functionality and performance. The software supports communication on both data protocols – binary and NMEA.

To install the GeoSDemo5®, unzip the program archive and run setup_geosdemo_v5.x.exe.

3.2 VCP Driver Installation

For establishing correct communication between demo software and EVB, the FTDI VCP driver should

be installed. If GeoSDemo5® will be used, then no extra actions are necessary as VCP driver will be installed automatically during program installation.

To enable EVB operation with any software rather than GeoSDemo5®, the VCP driver should be installed

first; it can be downloaded at http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm. The VCP driver creates two virtual COM ports when EVB is connected to the PC.

3.3 Getting Started

Attach GNSS antenna to EVB. Turn the computer on and wait until OS is loaded. Connect USB ports of EVB and computer; after that, two USB serial ports should appear in device manager (COM5, COM6 in Figure 7).

If the operating system fails to detect USB device correctly (unknown USB device found or only one virtual COM port appeared instead of two), it is recommended to:

Connect EVB to other USB port;

Use USB-hub with external power capability.

To switch the EVB on, turn the POWER switch to ON position.

After power-up, GeoS-5 RTK® module starts automatically. On default, it operates as Rover.

3.4 GeoSDemo5® Brief Operation Guidelines

Run GeoSDemo5®. The first screen to appear (Figure 8) provides the options to select the way of defining PC’s COM ports for communication with the receiver. If EVB is connected for the first time, it is recommended to choose the option Detection COM ports automatically that allows PC to detect COM ports associated with EVB automatically.

The next screen to appear is the Main program window (Figure 9) with opened bookmark Channels. The window presents information about received signals, position/velocity/time and some auxiliary data.

GPS satellites are shown blue, GLONASS satellites – light green.

Solution type indicator shows No Fix if navigation data is not available or not valid. As soon as the module gets valid position fix, the indicator will show following:

Single: standard accuracy solution;

Code-diff: code-differential solution;

Float RTK: RTK float solution;

Fixed RTK: RTK fixed solution.

Yellow color denotes extrapolated solution or smoothed transition from one type of solution to other type.

3.4.1 Configuring Base Station

Select SettingsSet reference ECEF coordinates or Set receiver operation mode (Figure 10).

Option 1: to set antenna reference ECEF coordinates.

Select Operation modecoordinates hold, enter WGS-84 XYZ reference coordinates of the point where GNSS antenna is placed (Figure 11).

Click Ok, then solution type indicator will turn to Hold, and configuration indicator will show Base (Figure 12).

Option 2: to use averaged coordinates calculated by the GNSS module.

Select Operation modesurvey-in, set survey-in interval value (in minutes) in the range of 15 to 1440 (Figure 13). Recommended value is 60 minutes.

Click Ok, then solution type indicator will show Single, and configuration indicator Base will start counting down (Figure 14).

As soon as specified survey-in interval is completed, solution type indicator will turn to Hold as shown in Figure 12 and start transmitting differential corrections.

3.4.2 Checking Reception of RTCM Corrections

Select QueriesRTCM messages reception statistics.

3.4.3 FW Update

For updating GeoS-5 RTK® module firmware, select CommandsUpdate FW.

Choosing Update FW opens panel for browsing FW update file to download (Figure 18). The FW file has the following format: RTKgeos5_xxx.bin. Select the file and click Open.

After browsing the FW file, the program will start updating process as shown in Figure 19.

3.5 Direct Hardware Access to GeoS-5 RTK®

For direct access to GeoS-5 RTK® module without UHF communication, use AUX connector signals in following way:

Disconnect EVB’s USB port from PC;

Apply DC voltage 4.7 to 26 V to pin 19 (V_IN);

Connect pin 15 (RF_RST) to the ground;

Use Port #0 signals TX0 (pin 10) and RX0 (pin 11) for communication with module using binary data;

Port #1 signals:

o Use TX1 (pin 12) for getting access to differential corrections stream (Base station) or NMEA messages (Rover);

o Use RX1 (pin 13) for applying differential corrections (Rover).

3.6 Recommended GNSS Antenna Placement

Since RTK technology allows calculating position of the object with centimeter-level accuracy, it is more sensitive to the GNSS antenna placement conditions, in contrast to standard accuracy GNSS modules.

Examples of recommended GNSS antenna placement are depicted in Figure 21.

Recommended environment:

Open sky, elevation angle mask not less 15 degrees above horizon. Absence of objects nearby: buildings, cars, trees, people, etc.

In case of using not geodetic-quality GNSS antenna, use a ground plane for reducing multipath effects: a metal sheet with a radius not less 10 cm, a metal roof of a building or a machine can be used as the ground plane.

Ensure that other electronic devices are not located close to the GNSS antenna.
