• Under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, Indonesia has sovereignty over the waters covering an area of 3.2 million km2, consist of:
• archipelagic waters: 2.9 million km2
• territorial sea area: 0.3 million km2.
• In addition Indonesia also has the exclusive right to exploit marine resources and related interests in an area of 2.7 km2 EEZ waters (up to 200 miles from baselines).

The distribution of natural resources and human resources are not evenly distributed, differ among regions.
