commands/polite requests/hin+her

COMMANDSimperative

There are three command forms one for each form of address ( i.e. each “you”)

• you: Sie ( formal )

• you: ihr ( familiar plural )

• you: du ( familiar singular)

you: Sie (formal)

This command is formed by simply reversing the word order. Like in a question the command begins with the predicate:

• Kommen Sie herein. (Come in.)

• Machen Sie die Tür zu. (Close the door.)

• Rufen Sie mich an. (Call me.)

you: ihr (familiar plural)

This command is formed similarly - reverse word order BUT do not use the pronoun “ihr”.

• Kommt [ihr] herein. (Come in.)

• Macht die Tür zu. (Close the door)

• Ruft mich an. (Call me.)

you: du (familiar singular)

Again reverse the word order , drop the pronoun AND the verb ending:

• Komm[st du] herein. (Come in.)

• Mach die Tür zu. (Close the door.)

• Ruf mich an. (Call me.)

PREFIXES

• HIN

indicates a movement away from the speaker towards somewhere else

It is often used in conjunction with another prefixes like

auf - aus - ein - unter

• HER

indicates a movement towards the speaker from somewhere

It is often used in conjunction with another prefixes like

auf - aus - ein - unter

EXAMPLES

• hinuntergehen hinaufgehen

• Er geht die Treppe hinunter.

• Er geht die Treppe hinauf.

EXAMPLES

• heraufkommen herunterkommen

• Er kommt die Treppe herauf.

• Er kommt die Treppe herunter.

• Sie geht in das Haus hinein.(I am outside and she goes in)

• herauskommen

• Sie kommt aus dem Haus heraus.( I am outside and she comes out)

Rufen Sie seine Mutter an! Ruf seine Mutter nicht an!

bleiben Sie hier! Bleib nicht hier!

Halten Sie das Auto an! Halt(e) das Auto nicht an!

Vergessen Sie es! Vergiss es nicht!

POLITE REQUESTS

If the command / imperative sounds to strong (or if you are not quite sure how to form it) this form can be used as an alternative. It corresponds quite literally to the English

““would you (please) do s.th”would you (please) do s.th”““würden Sie (bitte) etwas machen”würden Sie (bitte) etwas machen”

the only difference being - as usual - that the second verb “do = machen” appears at the end of the German clause.

WÜRDE“würde” for those who want to know is the subjunctive form

of the verb “werden”, just as “would” is the subjunctive form of “will”.

It is conjugated like this:
