PET OF THE WEEK I'm Chip - I am a very sweet boy ... alittle on the shy side. I am veryrespectful of cats, good with childrenand very playful with other dogs. Staffsays I should go to a home with chi ldrenover the age of 6. I am going to needtime to adjust - I am a little on the cautious side when it comesto new environments. I know sit, shake and love to give kisses.I'm going to warn you - I love counters ... any type of food youleave on them is open game - that's my job right? I love to runso I must go home with a Martingale collar and I must alwaysbe leashed or tied up at all times. Some people say I lack manners when I jump - I'm just a little excited! I look forward toa new family that will work with me and love me forever!

Tip of the Week: Keep Easter lilies and candy bunnies in check—chocolate goodies are toxic to cats, dogs and ferrets, and lilies can be fatal if ingested by our furry friends. And be mindful, kitties love to nibble on colorful plastic grass, whichcan lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting and dehydration. License Number #266935-DS

Public safety officials in MenomoneeFalls and Germantown have issued tempo-rary open burning bans in response to dryconditions.

Menomonee Falls announced its banon March 16 while Germantown followeda day later.

In separate statements, both communi-ties said their bans are a result of factorsthat create "fire weather." There is current-ly soil, leaf litter and brush that are drying

rapidly from winter's low snowfall andshallow frost along with dry conditions, strong gusty winds and low humidity.

The open burn ban came after thestate Department of Natural Resources(DNR) suspended burning permits in 22counties statewide March 16 due what theagency said is "expected to beWisconsin's first widespread risk of high tovery high fire danger."

Germantown took the punishment fromKimberly and gave it back. They sur vived agrinding game with scoring by committeeand matching the physicality to beat thePapermakers, 54-47, in the Division 1 sec-tional final in Manitowoc to punch their tick-et to Madison and the WIAA Boys StateTournament for the fourth straight year.

The Warhawks will put their 26-0record on the line against Madison East(20-6), March 20, at 8:15 p.m., at the KohlCenter, in the state semifinal game. Theywill try to make history in their quest to wintheir fourth title in a row.

“It’s really is just unbelievable,” seniorguard Brian Studer said. “I couldn’t evendream of this before, so it’s incredible.”Added junior guard Juwan McCloud.“That’s an honor,” he said. “Especially togo (after) four in a row. I don’t know howmany teams have done that but I knowthat’s a special thing to do.”

Germantown knew what they would bein for against Kimberly because the twoteams played each other last year with atrip to state on the line and the Warhawkswere prepared for a team with footballplayers on their roster.

“Coach (Steve Showalter) said theywere a bunch of (big guys),” senior forwardDwayne Lawhorn Jr. said. “They are abunch of football players. They work hard. They had that winning mentality becausethey won a s tate championship in football. We just outmuscled them this game.”

Germantown was out of sync early inthe game as some turnovers and soft

defense allowed Kimberly to take a 10-5lead in the first quarter. The Warhawkswent on an 8-0 run to take a 13-10 advan-tage. A three-point basket by Kimberly sen-ior guard Colin Tessner tied the score at 13entering the second quarter.

Senior forward Kyle Theis scored thefirst four points of the second quarter bymaking one of his two free throws at the 6minute 7 second mark in the quarter andconverting on a 3-point play 30 secondslater to break the tie and give Germantowna 17-13 lead and they never trailed again. He had six points in the quarter. TheWarhawks’ largest lead in the half waseight at 25-17. They led 27-22 at thehalfway mark.

Germantown held a five point lead latein the third quarter until a three by Kimberlysenior guard Ben Boots cut the lead to 34-32. Baskets by Studer and McCloud endeda 4-0 run by the Warhawks to take a six-point lead into the final period.

A 5-0 run by Kimberly to start the fourthquarter pulled them to within one at 38-37.A jumper and a three-pointer by junior for-ward Max Keefe boosted the Germantownlead to 43-37. The biggest play on offensecame from Lawhorn, who was fouled aftermaking a three and the free throw for a 4-point play to put the Warhawks back upseven at 47-40 with 3:41 left.

“They gave me some space,” Lawhornsaid. “I let it go. They fouled me and luckily(the three-pointer) went in.”

Kimberly got no closer than four pointsdown the stretch. For Germantown, it wasabout doing whatever it took to make theirsixth trip overall to the state tournament.

The Kettle Moraine Lutheran girls basket-ball team fell behind early to Whitewater instate Division 3 semifinal March 13 andcould never catch up, as the Whippetstopped the Chargers 47-30.

"They certainly were the better teamtoday. They jumped on us early in the firstquarter," Kettle Moraine Lutheran Coach

Jason Walz said afterward.Whitewater jumped out to a 5-0 lead

before Lyndsey Soderbeck put KettleMoraine Lutheran on the board with a layupat the 4:03 mark of the first quarter. TheWhippets then outscored Kettle MoraineLutheran 9-2 to take a 14-4 lead after t he firstquarter. Walz said Whitewater was able toscore several points off transition in the firstquarter while his team did a better job of get-ting back on defense in the second and thirdquarters.

Whitewater extended their lead to 14points before baskets by Soderbeck andMikayla Voigt reduced the Whitewater leadto 22-11 by halftime.

Kelsey Reynolds and Sarah Schumacherscored the first two baskets for Whitewater tostart the third quarter as the Whippets addedon to their lead. Whitewater held a 45-25lead with 2:20 remaining before KettleMoraine Lutheran cut into the margin beforetime expired.

Walz said the key statistics for his teamwere the 24 turnovers and four assists.

"Obviously, you're not going to wingames with that stat," Walz said. Walz saidWhitewater is long and was able to coverspace well. The Chargers also convertedonly 13 of 50 field goal attempts (26 per-cent) which Walz said may have been dueto the leng
