The rainy season has started and hit out office hard this year. On Sunday June 4 there was a very heavy downpour and our office got flooded. Many books were damaged by the water and had to be thrown away. We improved our stock protection measures by putting all of our stored books on raised waterproofed platforms. Despite this setback we continue to send fulfil large book orders. We sent over 1000 books to one of our fantastic partner in Karen State. It was a big challenge. The books we put into boxes which were subsequently wrapped in plastic to protect against rain and mud and they got to the partner program without issue. We’re very pleased to have MohMohMyintZaw, and alumni from Minmahaw and Chaing Mai University, interning with us at the moment. She’s with the Curriculum and Teacher Training Departments for June and July. No updates about Mote Oo’s finances. They continue to be in order and we use Banana accounting software and sound financial procedures. We continue to attend events and set up book stalls at

education events. Between April and June we have held bookstalls at - Karuna Education Fair, Yangon - National Network for Education Reform, Mawlawmyine - Initiative for Peace Uniting World College of South East Asia, Singapore - People in Need’s Forum for Peace, Yangon - The Third Annual Conference on English Language Teaching, Mandalay University - Initiative for Peace Uniting World College of South East Asia Conference, Maesot

Civics and Peace Department

In May, we welcomed Min Aung

Myint Myat to the Mote Oo team as the

new Life Skills Project Assistant. He

gained Bachelor Degree from University of

Community Health, Magway in 2016.

Previously, he worked together with youth

groups as a facilitator and networked with

key partners and stakeholders. He also has

Life Skills Project

sound experience in team building and

conducting research activities in

cooperation and collaboration with local

CSOs and partners. He will help Mote

Oo attain effective further network

communication with other sectors,

especially in mental health.

We are very pleased to announce

that our Life Skills book ‘’Young Adult

Success” English Version has been printed

and is now being piloted. We are

delivering these draft books to our

partners, teachers and learners from

various sectors, including adolescent and

mental health specialists, in order to gain

feedback. We have evaluation forms for

both teachers and learners. We will

review the evaluations and incorporate

this feedback into the Myanmar Language

version due for publishing around August

2017.

Following that, we will have a

Young Adult Success book launching

event and also conduct workshops and

trainings for teachers and civil society

organisations around areas they identified

as being of priority for their own

development.

If you would like a hard of pdf soft

copy of Young Adult Success (English

Version), and are willing to provide

feedback, please email to

[email protected].

State; run a conflict and peace training in

Mandalay; facilitated a workshop at the

Mandalay University; and attended People

In Need’s “Forum for Peace”. We have

also networked with other organisations

Mote Oo’s peace team has been

very busy since the release of the last

newsletter! We have attended a peace

education conference in Singapore;

visited many local organisations in Mon

in the peace education sector and with

interfaith and human rights organisations.

In addition, we invited several trainers

from different organisations to a 2-day

workshop on Non-Violent Communica-

tion in Yangon.

In the next quarter we will

continue to travel around the country to

deliver more conflict and peace trainings.

More exciting news: fresh textbooks will

soon arrive from the printers! Mote Oo’s

brief textbook “Conflict and Peace. An

Introduction” is finally available in

Burmese language, and our “Conflict and

Peace. Unit One: Understanding

Conflict” will be available in Burmese in

July. Later this year our “Conflict and

Peace. Unit two: Understanding Peace”

will be released in English and in

Burmese. You can buy these textbooks

from our office or from many different

book shops, or make an order and we

can deliver the books to you.

The Curriculum Department has been working with

Myanmar Community Academies on Learning Skills, which is

almost finished piloting. Our consultant, Stan, will be collecting

feedbcak and writing the final draft, due out in September.

We are about to start the second in this series, Research

Skills. We are currently researching it, and have hired Aung Zaw

Myo (a.k.a Neo) as a consultant researcher and writer.

The New Teacher 4 (Assessment) is being drafted, and

should be ready by September. TnT1 (Identifying Needs) is being

updated. We are fortunate to have Briana Rogers, and

experienced trainer who previously worked at ESC Nu Po, to

help with this.

Curriculum and Publication Department

We are sad to say goodbye to Yee Yee, who left Mote

Oo after two years of great work. We wish her all the best.

Mote Oo has been working with Myanmar-Gurkha/Nepali

writer Nandar to publish a Myanmar language translation of We

Should All Be Feminists, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. We

expect to publish it in July. If you are interested in either the

book or the author, contact Mote Oo or email Nandar

at [email protected].

We continue working on our Conflict and Peace series

(nearly finished!), on Learning Skills. In May, the New Teacher 3

(Myanmar language) was published.

Curriculum

Special Projects

We have been continuing our work with the Karen

Refugee Committee's Institute of Higher Education on

developing materials, curriculum and exam banks for their English

and social studies courses.

In June, we went to Hmawbi to work with the teachers at

the Network for Environment and Economic Development's

young farmer training curriculum.

Our Mae Sot office is assisting with the Karen language

versions of training plans for the Karen Education Department's

curriculum programme with Save the Children.

Work continues on projects for Hanns Seidel Foundation,

Tetratech and Infomatrix.

At the end of June, we worked with Kintha Initiative to

develop civics, peace and English curriculum for their new post-

secondary school, the Akyab Institute for Social Studies.

I believe that having curiosity and passion drives us to

achieve our goals. My passion for and interest in teaching led

me to become a teacher trainer in MoteOo Education in late

August 2016. I have conducted several Teacher Training

workshops on general teaching skills, classroom management

and lesson planning. For civic education training I train on

subject knowledge, teaching techniques and facilitation skills. I

also have delivered Personal and Professional Development

workshops. Delivering the training can be difficult because we

have to coordinate with many different organisations but I

appreciate this challenge because it improves my professional

skills. As I have become one of the Mote Oo family, I feel

very satisfied and confident. In the future I would like to train

in the most remote areas where there is the greatest need for

education. My ambition is to become a highly-skilled and

experienced trainer with broad subject-specific training

abilities.

Matthew is one of Mote Oo's co-founders. He had

been teaching English and writing and designing ELT materials

for several years before Mote Oo. He taught a lot of IELTS,

and had strong opinions on both IELTS and the materials used

to teach it and the ways that it is best taught. In 2013, when

Mote Oo was born, Matthew became the Publications

Manager, and was tasked with designing the books that Mote

Oo produces today. Matthew is happiest when he and his

computer are together, and they are working on solving the

textual/visual problems that arise when designing a textbook.

He uses Adobe Indesign, but is completely useless at

Photoshop, and relies on the Publications team to do all the

clever things and draw illustrations. Matthew thinks that the

best place to design book covers and page layouts is in a

noisy tea shop. This was more difficult before mobile wifi

became cheap.

Ask The T ra i n e r s P a g e 1 1

Dear Trainers, I am a teacher at a high school. I have 50 students in my classroom, and I sometimes have to discipline my students with physical intimidation, in the midst of lesson deadlines, paperwork, administrative obligations and roaring loud uncontrollably energetic colony of students. I don't feel particularly bad about it as it has always been the only way I have been able to stay on top of my class. But we have received explicit instructions from leadership not to beat children. Dear High School Teacher,

First, ask yourself why. What's the reason behind the

beating? If you beat them out of anger, these children will learn

violence. They may in the short term feardoing what you dislike,

but they will remember the violence and that will be reflected in

other aspects of their lives. I'm sure you don't want to be

responsible for that.

You can aim towards a classroom without physical

punishment. If you have already beaten a student, this can be a

possible remedy.

No. 1, forgive yourself,

No.2, sit with him or her to talk about why you had to beat

them, and that it wasn't personal.

No.3, inform what is expected of him or her in the future, and

reinforce the good behavior with praise

No.4, if s/he violates it again, use another form of reprimanding

measure in the future.

What reprimanding measures to use will depend on many

factors. But here are a few suggestions.

1.Assign the student some tasks to serve for the class. (then

praise for what a good job they did.)

2.Assign them more exercise. (then observe they get more

practice and praise for the more work they did)

3.Talk to them after the class in private, and tell them you don't

want him or her to be responsible for the class's disruption.

4.Show them that you are kind, but can't relieve them off of

their own responsibility for bad actions.

5.Have visuals on which group of students score highest on

good behavior charts.

We usually are more aware of bad behavior than good.

Try to see the good and praise it

Though it's not very nice for teachers to receive only

instructions and not support to implement those instructions,
