Shooting Island Edge Restoration
The shorelines of Ocean City’s back bay islands have been eroding. In March of 2019, Ocean City restored the shoreline of Shooting Island to the 1978 footprint. This phase of the restoration was funded by a $2.2M grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and is the first phased of the overall restoration project.

Protecting Shooting Island Through the Enhancement of Shellfish Habitat
As a part of the Shooting Island restoration, Ocean City recently received a grant from the New Jersey Corporate Wetland Restoration Partnership to support the colonization of shellfish along the restored edges and marsh surfaces. This program partners with the Ocean City High School and the educational programs run by the City and High School to increase coastal wetland education and awareness as well as support natural strengthening of the island ecosystem.
