Definitions: 2016 Impact Factor

• A = the number of times that articles published in a journal in 2014 and 2015 were cited by articles in indexed journals during 2016.

• B = total number of "citable items" published by a journal in 2014 and 2015. (Citable items: articles, reviews, proceedings, or notes; not editorials or letters to the editor.)

• 2016 impact factor = A/B

• Calculation: Cites to recent items: 3,098 = 6.284 IF

# of recent items: 493

Guideline ChecklistsARRIVE: Authors submitting research on animal studies are now required to complete an

adapted ARRIVE (Animals in Research: Reporting In Vivo Experiments) checklist at submission.

CONSORT: Authors of manuscripts reporting results of clinical trials are now required to upload

the CONSORT checklist at submission.

STROBE: Authors of manuscripts reporting results of human observational case-control, cohort,

This is your opportunity

to attract a reader’s

attention (including

citations!)

A good title

• A succinct and attention-catching title helps attract

citations and social media interest

• Include keywords, optimised for search engines:

think of how your paper will be found, once published

(N.B. Google)

• Keep it short – typically up to 15 words

• Make sure that vital information is included, e.g.

species

• Do not use abbreviations or acronyms

Page 30: Getting Published in ASBMR Journalsasbmr.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/pb-assets/assets/24734039/ASBMR... · Part 3: Post-submission: Navigating the peer review process from submission,

This is your opportunity

to help Editors/

Reviewers (what’s this

paper about?) AND

search engines

A good abstract

• Most publishers make all abstracts free to

access

• Maximum 250 words (Pubmed truncates at

250 words)

• Make sure that key words are included

• Include brief description of background and

rationale for study

• State underlying hypothesis

• Describe study design and methodology

• Summarise results, conclusions and

implications/applications

Title: Core keywords / key-phrases

Abstract: Repeat core keywords /

key-phrases 2 – 3 times, and add

other field-related ones

Headings and body text: Consistent

use of keywords

Make sure the terms you use are consistent:

e.g. which one: “dorsoventral”, “dorso-ventral”, “dorsal-ventral”? Which is more used in the

literature?.

Choose and place keywords wisely

Papers go through an initial checklist to make

sure the author guidelines have been followed

(format, length, language, figures etc.)

Papers may also be checked for plagiarism

using special software…

Create an account in the submission system.

Both JBMR® and JBMR® Plus use

ScholarOne.

Carefully follow the process through; make

sure the author list you input is complete, it

should match the names on the manuscript

take it!

Make the changes recommended by the

referees because an unchanged paper…

• may be sent to the same referees by

the next journal

• may get the same or similar comments

even from different reviewers

• Especially important if your paper is

transferred to JBMR® Plus. Editors want

Introducing Content Sharing

ReadCube Content sharing on Wiley Online Library will facilitate collaboration by

providing authors, the media and researchers with a simple tool for sharing full-text

content and allow non-subscribers to have complimentary access to Wiley content. A

pilot of 180 proprietary titles began in early 2017 and expanded to the full Wiley

Research portfolio in July 2017.

Graphical Abstracts

• Graphical Abstracts are a great way to introduce and expand on your research in a more visual and dynamic way!

• Graphical Abstracts can be uploaded at the time of submission and should include both the image and a short 80-word abstract summarizing the paper’s key findings

• Avoid graphs and other figures with fine

detail due to the relatively small size of

this image.
