Newsletter No. 26 Tuesday September 5th 2017

Our School Vision To develop outstanding citizens and life long learners who believe that effort and persistence leads to success.

Through our core values of Respect, Responsibility, Empathy, Innovation and Excellence we strive to make a

difference in our community and environment.

BRENT’S BANTER

Year 5/6 Camp Wilkin

The Year 5/6 students and staff had a wonderful time at Camp Wilkin which is nestled in a lovely bush

setting in Anglesea. The students took part in a range of activities from the rock climbing tower to Frisbee

golf, mountain biking, canoeing, initiatives and more. The activities challenged the students to work

together to solve problems or help each other overcome challenges. I was extremely proud of the way our

students worked together and the way they displayed our values throughout the camp. We strive to be a

genuinely student centred and inclusive school and that was definitely on show on the camp with the

students at the centre of the activities and working together to make sure everyone was involved.

It was also great to return to school and hear and see how the year 3/4 students stepped up to the

challenge of taking on leadership roles while the senior students were away. They took part in the maths

walkthroughs of the classes and in the running of assembly. Well done one and all for a great camp.

Student Led Conferences

Today our Student Led Conferences took place and it was exciting to see students taking the opportunity

to share their learning and growth with the family. For those who have not been able to make it to student

led conferences, we would love for your children to be able to still share with you, so please contact your

child’s teacher to find a time to do so. If you were wanting to make an appointment to speak with your

child’s teacher specifically, then I would encourage you to contact them and make a time.

COMPASS—Get On Board

As of the end of 2017, our current school app will cease operations. ‘Compass’ will be our app, which is

free to download from the app store. If you have not received your login details for Compass, please see

your eldest child’s teacher for a form to sign. Compass will allow you to view Learning Tasks, Semester

reports, newsletters, approve absences, receive important school information, etc.

For the remainder of 2017, everything that goes on our current school app will also appear on Compass,

to help with the ‘changeover’.

As of the beginning of 2018, Compass will be the one stop shop for all the information you need.

District Athletics Team

Congratulations to Xavier C, Oliver N. and George P. who qualified to represent CSPS at Division athletics

next Tuesday September 12th at Landy Field. We wish the boys good luck and know they will do their best!

Prep – Year 2 Swimming Program

The Perp – Year 2 swimming program starts from Tuesday next week so if you are still to finalise your

payments I would ask that you do so as soon as possible. The program promises to be an excellent

opportunity for students to further develop their swimming skills in time for the good weather coming in

Spring and Summer.

Parent Opinion Survey

A big thank you to the families who completed our online Parent Opinion Survey. Your feedback is valued

and helps us to shape our school in the future.

Principal’s Patch

In line with our Sun Smart Policy, Hats on Day was Friday September 1st so please make sure your

children have their hats named on their heads from now on. If you need to purchase a replacement hat

then please contact the office who will be able to supply you one for $8.

This Friday is our PFG fund-raising ‘Winter Wonderland’ Disco for the student of Clifton Springs Primary

School. Tickets are on sale for $10 from the Office which covers entry and a goodie bag including a drink,

lollies, popcorn and glow sticks. We look forward to seeing students there having fun with their friends.

Year 3/4 Camp is coming up fast in the last week of term so we look forward to the students travelling to

Sovereign Hill and learning all about the history of the Gold Fields.

Until next week I wish everyone a wonderful week and remind all families that maximising attendance is a

critical factor in your child achieving their potential so, remember it’s not OK to be away unless you’re

sick!

OF PAIRS OF SOCKS We are in desperate need of some

second hand socks for our spare clothes, especially during the wet weather. If you have some socks no longer needed at home, please send them to the office.

THANK YOU! The Father’s Day Stall held on Tuesday 29th of August was a great success, with many happy little faces leaving with purchases for their dads and other special people in their lives. I would like to say thank you to Matilda and Zoe for collecting each of

the classes and bringing them down to the stall. Another huge thank you to the volunteers on the stall, Kayla, Jen,

Cindy, Amanda, Mary, Debra, Lisa, Delli, Nina, Heather and Kerry. These events would not be possible without the support of our volunteers.

STAFF CAR PARK

A reminder to parents that the staff car park is not to be used, to park or drive through, to drop off or collect children from school UNLESS you are collecting them from sick bay or accessing the disabled car park.

We appreciate your co-operation with this!

IMMUNISATION & BIRTH CERTIFICATES The Department of Education requires us to have Birth and Immunisation Certificates for all our enrolments.

If you are still to supply your child’s IMMUNISATION OR BIRTH certificates, please do so as soon as possible.

If your child IS NOT IMMUNISED, we are required to have an Immunisation Exemption

form from your child’s doctor.

Extrinsic in Small Doses

Extrinsic motivation means being motivated by others with rewards or the avoidance of punishment. In the

picture of the farmer motivating his mule to move, the positive extrinsic force is the carrot dangled before

the mules eyes. The negative extrinsic force is the stick he uses to smack the mule’s backside. That

pictures the two great external factors – to gain pleasure [eat the carrot] or avoid pain [get away from the

stick].

True motivation comes from finding the ideal point of being challenged. If the challenge is too great, then

they may give up because the expectations are too high and appear unachievable. On the other hand, if

they aren’t challenged enough then they may become bored and give up. We need to try and find the right

balance.

Therefore we devise all sorts of ‘carrots’ to help them get pleasure, as well as devising a range of ‘sticks’

hoping that the pain will be great enough for them to avoid.

Ultimately our children are motivated to do their best when they enjoy what they are doing and are

surrounded by people they like.

That should enable you to see that if they are only being motivated by your carrots and sticks, then their

effect will be minimal. It is true that most people experience a great deal of ‘stick’ motivation. Do any of

these statements appear familiar?

Hand in your assignment by Tuesday or you will get a lunchtime detention.

If you don’t wear correct school uniform you will have to perform extra yard duties.

If you don’t keep your room tidy you will be grounded.

No computer until you have done your homework.

If we can help our children recognise the benefit of intrinsic motivation [being motivated internally to do

something – self motivation] then its effects will last a lot longer. When we do use extrinsic motivation then

use the carrot more than the stick [see State the Positive].
