Citrix Presentation Server Citrix Presentation Server enables multiple users to log on and run applications in

separate protected sessions on a single server or on multiple servers You install

Citrix Presentation Server on computers running Windows Terminal Services and

install and publish the applications or other resources that you want to deploy on

computers running Citrix Presentation Server For example you may want to

install office productivity applications (such as word processors and

spreadsheets) enterprise resource planning applications such as SAP and

Peoplesoft or any other custom applications

You can group a number of servers together to form a server farm A server farm

is a group of computers that you manage as a single entity Server farms provide

you with a flexible and robust way of deploying applications and content to users




Citrix Web Interface for Integration with Your Web

Server Use the Web Interface to give users access to published resources through the

Web or your Intranet Users log on to the Web Interface using their usual Web

browser and see links to the applications that they are authorized to run

The Web Interface dynamically creates an HTML page that shows the server farm

for each of your users After logging on each user sees a Web page that includes

all the applications and resources in the server farm that you configure for that

user Using the Web Interface you can create stand-alone Web sites for

application access or Web sites that can be integrated into your corporate portal

You can use the Web Interface with the Access Gateway or Secure Gateway (see

ldquoSecure Gateway for Secure Internet Trafficrdquo on page 15) to transport data

securely over the Internet using standards-based security technology To control

secure access to applications on computers running Presentation Server you can

use Access Gateway access control policies and filters

The Platinum Edition provides Web Interface integration with the Password

Manager self-service features account unlock and self-service password reset

Set up the Password Manager Service and have users register security questions

when they launch the Password Manager agent software When the security

questions are registered the users can reset their domain passwords or unlock

their domain accounts from the Web Interface without help desk or administrator

intervention




Citrix Presentation Server Clients for Secure

Remote AccessCitrix uses the Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) protocol to exchange

information between a userrsquos client device and the published resources on the

computer running Citrix Presentation Server The Citrix Presentation Server

client software is available for a range of different devices so users can connect to

published applications from various platforms

You publish any given application or content once on the server but multiple

users can simultaneously access the published resources Application processing

on the client is kept to a minimum because the application runs entirely on theserver The ICA protocol sends keystrokes mouse clicks and screen updates

between the server and the client so to the user of the client device it appears that

the software is running locally




Because applications run on the server and not on the client device users can

connect from any platform For example Microsoft Outlook running as a

published application looks and feels the same whether the user is connecting

from a Windows CE hand-held computer a Macintosh desktop or a Linux

workstation You can control user connections to the server to prevent over-

consumption of licenses or server resources

With many clients (including the Clients for Windows Java Macintosh and

Linux) you can secure ICA communications using the Secure Socket Layer

(SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols SSLTLS provides server

authentication encryption of the data stream and message integrity checks and

enables you to deliver applications securely within a LAN or across the Internet

Secure Gateway for Secure Internet TrafficThe Secure Gateway is a secure Internet gateway for ICA data traveling into and

out of a server farm You can secure all traffic traveling across the Internet among

computers running Citrix Presentation Server and SSL-enabled client

workstations Using the Secure Gateway makes firewall traversal easier and

provides heightened security by providing a single point of entry and secure

access to your server farms

Consoles for Managing Your DeploymentCitrix provides two consoles for managing servers and farms both locally and

remotely

For Citrix Presentation Server use the Access Management Console to manageapplications servers and farm properties Create a variety of reports configure

application access (both through the Web Interface and Program Neighborhood

use the console to configure health monitoring tests troubleshoot alerts diagnose

problems in your farms view hotfix information for your Citrix products and

Network Manager for Citrix Presentation Server Network Manager allows you to remotely control and monitor the status of computers running Citrix Presentation Server Enterprise Edition using a third-

party SNMP management console

Network Manager consists of the SNMP Agent for Citrix Presentation Server

installed automatically as part of Citrix Presentation Server Enterprise Edition

and plug-ins for supported SNMP management console applications Using a

third-party SNMP management console you can terminate processes send a

message to log off or disconnect from an active ICA session on a computer

running Citrix Presentation Server Enterprise Edition

Network Manager also includes the Management Information Base (MIB)

definition file for Citrix Presentation Server You can use any SNMP

management console application that supports MIB browsing to monitor andcontrol computers running Citrix Presentation Server

The Network Manager plug-ins interact with the SNMP management consoles

through API calls provided by the SNMP management consoles The Network

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is the standard management

infrastructure included as part of Microsoft Windows 2000 or later Two key

components of WMI are WMI providers and WMI consumers

The Citrix Presentation Server Provider is a WMI provider that extracts

information about the server on which it is installed and the farm in which the

server is a member The Citrix Presentation Server Provider presents the

information to a WMI consumer such as Microsoft Operations Manager a

management solution for Microsoft Windows 2000 server deployments

The Citrix Presentation Server Management Pack is a plug-in to Microsoft

Operations Manager that interprets and reports information supplied by the Citrix

Presentation Server Provider The Management Pack also includes an extensive

knowledge base with links to Citrix Knowledge Center articles and other sources

of information that administrators can use to interpret events and troubleshoot

problems

The Citrix Presentation Server Management Pack requires the Citrix PresentationServer Provider to be installed on every server about which you want to gather

Citrix Presentation Server Citrix Presentation Server is the server component of Citrixrsquos access

You install Citrix Presentation Server on one or more servers and install and

publish the applications server desktop or other resources that you want users to

For each server farm you need a database called a data store Citrix Presentation

Server uses the data store to centralize configuration information for a server farm in one location The data store maintains information about the servers

applications and administrators in the server farm Using a data store ensures a

scalable and flexible system for managing your servers




Depending on the size and complexity of the server farm you can use a

Microsoft-supplied database tool or a true clientserver database Microsoft

Access and Microsoft SQL Server Express are suitable for small to mid-size

server farms Clientserver databases such as Oracle Microsoft SQL Server or

IBM DB2 are suitable for server farms of any size

Citrix Access Management ConsoleThe Access Management Console extends your ability to manage your

deployment by integrating many of the administrative features of your Citrix

products into the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) The Access

Management Console is a stand-alone snap-in to the MMC Management

functionality is provided through a number of management tools (extension snap-

ins) that you can select when you install the Access Management Console or at

any time later

Citrix Web InterfaceUsing the Web Interface you can create stand-alone Web sites for application

access or Web sites that you can integrate into your corporate portal Deploying

the Web Interface involves the interaction of three network components

bull A server farm

bull A Web server on which you install the Web Interface

bull A client device with a Web browser and depending on the platform you

choose client software

Interface you must install the Access Management Console

The Secure GatewayThe Secure Gateway enables you to secure access to server farms which host

published resources that network users can access over the LAN or WAN and to

access centers which allow access to Web content internal Web servers and

published resources The Secure Gateway transparently encrypts and

authenticates all user connections to protect against data tampering and theft

When a user clicks an application icon using the Web Interface the Web

Interface contacts a service called the Secure Ticket Authority (STA) for a

ldquosecure ticketrdquo

The userrsquos connection to the application is then routed through the Secure

Gateway which is usually in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) The Secure Gateway

server validates the ticket with the STA If the ticket is valid the STA providesthe address of the server that can provide the application

You install the Secure Gateway from the components CD The STA is

automatically installed with Citrix Presentation Server it does not have to be

installed on a separate server

Citrix SSL RelayIf you want to secure all communications within your environment using SSL or

TLS you can use Citrix SSL Relay to secure communications among supported

clients the Web Interface and computers running Citrix Presentation Server

To deploy Citrix SSL Relay you need server certificates on each computer

running Citrix Presentation Server or the Web Interface

Citrix SSL Relay is a feature of all Citrix Presentation Server installations

Conferencing Manager for Citrix PresentationServer This component adds intuitive application conferencing to Citrix Presentation

Server that eliminates the geographical distance between team members

increases the productivity of meetings and allows easy collaboration

Citrix Presentation Server Advanced Edition is designed with the small to

medium business in mind The Advanced Edition enables all of the features

included with the Standard Edition and also provides advanced load management

using Load Manager

Load Manager for Citrix Presentation Server You can set up monitor and balance the server and published application loads

in a server farm so that users can run the published applications they need quickly

and efficiently

The criteria you define in Load Manager determine which servers are least busy

and can best run an application When users launch published resources Load

Manager selects which server will run the application or desktop session based

on server load Load Manager ensures that the application runs on a server that is

not overloaded and so improves performance for users

Using Load Manager also offers increased availability By configuring a pool of

servers capable of running your usersrsquo applications you can easily bring serversoff-line for maintenance or add more servers for increased performance without

affecting application availability

Load Manager is installed automatically when you install Citrix Presentation

Continuous AvailabilityThe following new features significantly reduce end user down time and increase

the consistency of user access experience

Configuration LoggingConfiguration Logging enables you to keep track of administrative changes made

to your server farms which administrator made the change what the change was

and when it was made It also enables you to revert those changes if necessary

You can also create a Report Center report that lists these details and also

indicates whether or not the change was successful the object the changeaffected and various further details of the change For further information on how

to configure and use Configuration Logging see the Citrix Presentation Server





Health Monitoring amp RecoveryYou can proactively monitor farm health by running Health Monitoring tests onservers to ensure that if one of them has a problem (for example the Citrix IMA

Service may be down or there may be a problem with Terminal Services) this does

not interfere with the userrsquos ability to access the application through another server

You can specify different recovery actions to be taken automatically if a server fails

a test these include restarting the server or preventing it from being used for load balancing until the problem is fixed

Citrix supplies a set of tests that run by default on all servers and you can alsosupply your own or third party tests

Health Monitoring amp Recovery is available only with the Platinum and EnterpriseEditions of Citrix Presentation Server For further information on Health

Non-Administrator Client InstallationUsers who do not have administrator privileges on a locked down device such as

a computer in an Internet cafe or a kiosk can download and install a modified

Web Client on a per user basis In this way users can have secure remote access

Enhanced End User Access ExperienceEnd user access experience is enhanced by the increased responsiveness of

graphics-intensive applications offered through SpeedScreen Progressive

Display This feature also facilitates remote use of these graphics-intensive

applications and reduces bandwidth usage

A lossy compression scheme reduces the size of image files for faster throughput

The compression scheme removes redundant data while attempting to minimize

the loss of information In this way SpeedScreen Progressive Display offers you

a trade-off between the quality of photographic image files as they appear on

client devices and the amount of bandwidth the files consume on their way from

server to client

Chapter 3 New in this Release 33Document Center

Easier Application DeploymentYou can install and configure an application on one file server and the application

is streamed to any other server on demand Upgrading or patching applications is

quick because only one installation needs to be updated

Application streaming offers the following benefits to enterprises

bull Cost effective scalable application delivery to end users

bull Lower installation and maintenance costs for applications and servers in

large farms

bull Access to any application anywhere any time regardless of connection

Application streaming is available only with the Enterprise Edition of Citrix

Secure AccessCitrixrsquos optimized secure architecture now provides Advanced Encryption

Standard (AES) support It also protects clients and users from connecting to

untrusted servers Clients can specify the requirements for trust and determine

whether or not they trust a connection to the server

For example a client connecting to a certain address (such as httpscitrixcom)

with a specific connection type (such as SSL) is directed to a trusted zone on the

server This trust relationship increases the confidence of client administrators

and users in the integrity of data on client devices and prevents the malicious use

Further Enhancements in this ReleaseFurther enhancements in this release include

Alerts storage and reporting Alerts can now be stored in the Resource

Manager summary database together with related information such as when the

alert occurred and which server was affected This enables you to create a reportlisting all the alerts that were generated during a particular period of time For

Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 support The Citrix Presentation Server

Management Pack now provides full support for MOM 2005 features For further

Monitoring profiles Rather than configuring metrics for each server you can

configure a set of metrics save them as a monitoring profile then apply that

profile to a range of servers For further information on monitoring profiles see

Automatic proxy detection support Proxy servers can be automatically

detected this means users do not have to configure the proxy server manually In

larger environments this also means administrators do not have to support

incorrect or dynamic configurations For further information see the Clients for


Program Neighborhood Agent backup URL support Administrators can

specify backup URLs for Program Neighborhood Agent in their Web Interface

configuration In addition if Program Neighborhood Agent cannot connect to the

Web Interface administrators can specify backup URLs in a new MSI package

Multilingual user interface The Windows Installer package automatically

installs the clients in all supported languages Beginning with version 100 of the

Clients for Windows language-specific installation packages are no longer

Subscription Advantage Customers Resettingthe Product EditionFor Subscription Advantage customers who have Standard Edition deployments

your Subscription Advantage agreement may entitle you to upgrade to

Presentation Server 45 Advanced Edition Check with your Citrix reseller for

eligibility requirements

Because of the difference between the editions it is necessary for you to change

the edition of your farms from Standard to Advanced You must also upgrade

your licenses as described in the Citrix white paper Licensing Migrating

1 From the Access Management Console expand the farm and Servers

nodes and select the server whose edition you want to change
