August 2016
Another exciting year of programs and events is about to begin! Our first monthly lunch meeting is coming
up on September 13, 2016 at ASHRAE headquarters and we have a special guest! An ASHRAE Society Past
President, Distinguished Lecturer and one of our very own in Region IV, Tom Phoenix, will be presenting
on the updated ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) Energy Labeling Program. The presentation will
include an overview of the bEQ program with an up to date discussion of its primary goals, objectives and
procedures. We look forward to hearing about the progress ASHRAE has made and what to expect in the
near future.
As we continue to improve building operations and design high efficient buildings, sometimes we forget
about the occupants. In the end, we design and operate buildings for people. The new WELL standard,
which has gained a lot of momentum in recent years, is helping bring focus to wellness in buildings and
putting people front and center. From superior indoor air quality and circadian lighting to water filtration
and fitness, WELL is leading the way in occupant wellness. Our goal is to have an exciting panel and
technical session in October to help ASHRAE members understand how this new standard will impact their
roles in projects to come.
With the end of summer almost here, the Atlanta Chapter has successfully hosted this year’s Chapter
Regional Conference for Region IV at the Legacy Lodge and Conference Center located at Lanier Islands.
Big congratulations to one of our past Chapter Presidents, Brian Justice, for doing an incredible job as CRC
Chair and to his team of volunteers! The conference was a great success and praised by visiting Society
President Tim Wentz, three of our Society Vice Presidents (Patricia Graef, Ginger Scoggins and Edward
Tsu) and Executive Vice President (Jeff Littleton), all of whom were in attendance. It was a great learning
experience for our new committee chairs and chapter officers as they set their goals for the year. It is
always a pleasure to meet with our regional counter-parts from North and South Carolina, exchange ideas
and continue to improve our local chapter. Our chapter came just 1 point short of receiving the coveted
Rudy Ferguson Award! A big thank you to last year’s Chapter President, John Pruitt and all our volunteers
who did a fantastic job. We look forward to his continued involvement in the chapter and helping us
towards another successful year. We had a few more awards that will be announced at our next meeting,
so stay tuned!
We will be continuing our Fall and Spring golf tournaments this year, both of which have been our top
performers in reaching our Research Promotion donation goal. The Fall Golf Tournament is scheduled for
Wednesday October 26, 2016 at River Pines, where our last Spring Golf Tournament was hosted. More
information on registration coming soon!

I am very excited about our team of volunteers this year and can’t wait to finalize our schedule of meetings
for the year. We will be having a meeting every month with the exception of December, due to holidays,
and April, as we plan on having a Product Show complete with vendor exhibits and technical sessions. As
always, feel free to reach out to me directly if you are interested in volunteering for our chapter or have
any recommendations for the year. We welcome new volunteers and have several committee positions
available, so get signed up!
I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, September 13th at ASHRAE headquarters for lunch at our first
meeting!

The Value of ASHRAE’s bEQ
This program will present an update and overview of ASHRAE’s Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) program.
The presentation focuses on bEQ’s use, not just as an energy labeling program, but as a powerful tool to
identify ways to assess building energy use and improve the building’s performance.

HVAC Design Tip: It’s true that we have to save energy in everything that we do. But keeping people healthier
overrides energy saving. So next time you put a system together don’t forget to be sure that your system handles
the minimum mandated ventilation and infiltration.
Feel free to send me your tips to be included in future newsletters. After all were here to enjoy, learn, and have
fun.
